Alan Randy May is a Canadian who played ice hockey professionally and now works as an analyst. He was born on January 14, 1965. Between 1988 and 1995, he was a member of five different National Hockey League clubs throughout his playing career. In 1999, he coached the Dallas Stallions roller-hockey Club, which did not last long.
He works as a hockey commentator for NBC Sports Washington at present. Sherayne and Alan have been married for three years and have three children. Although the Boston Bruins gave May his start in the National Hockey League by signing him as a free agent, he would spend most of his time playing in the lower leagues. After that, he signed up with the Edmonton Oilers.
However, he spent most of his time playing for their farm team in the minors. After being traded to the Washington Capitals in June of 1989, he could finally take on a more critical position in the group. His gritty, hard-nosed style of play earned him a fan favorite when he was with the Capitals for over five seasons.
In 1990, he was instrumental in the team’s advancement to the semifinals for the first time in franchise history. May still holds the record for most penalty minutes accumulated in a single season with the Capitals, with 339, which he achieved during the 1989-1990 season. Before calling it a career in the National Hockey League, May had stints with the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames.
There was a time when it was thought that May was the first player from the ECHL to play in the National Hockey League; however, May never participated in the ECHL. Even though the East Coast Hockey League did not exist until the following year, he played for the Atlantic Coast Hockey League Thunderbirds during the 1986–1987 season. May is the only player in the history of the Carolina Thunderbirds to make it to the NHL without having any previous experience playing professionally.
He played in 393 games for the NHL and racked up 1,348 penalty minutes while scoring 31 goals and 45 assists. May finished his career with four trades just before the NHL trades deadline. In 2018, Thomas Vanek matched this record he had previously held. Late in the week before last, Alex Ovechkin moved up to second place on the all-time goals list for the National Hockey League, passing Gordie Howe. Ovechkin’s legendary reputation rose to a new level when he scored goal number 802.
But it does not imply that Ovechkin is too prestigious or Hall-of-Fame-y to add a moment of humor to a live television broadcast. It does not mean that. Alan May, standing behind the corner boards at Madison Square Garden after the Capitals’ win against the Rangers by a score of 4-0, provided his concluding thoughts for the postgame program broadcast on NBC Sports Washington. At this exact moment, players for the Washington Capitals were dressed formally and exited the arena via the locker room door.
Evgeny Kuznetsov gave the first-place finisher, May 1, a friendly push in the back. Then Alex Ovechkin walked onto the scene and waved to May or gave her bunny ears, depending on how you looked. Whatever Ovechkin did, it got May to laugh out loud and break character. May was covering the squad in New York City since Al Koken was stranded at an airport due to a travel cancellation by Southwest Airlines.
Naturally, this is not the first time Ovechkin pulled a joke on someone while they were filmed. During interviews with Evgeny Kuznetsov, Alexander Ovechkin spewed incoherent gibberish. In the past, he’s also had a great time working on the “Two-Man Advantage” game preview movies with Mike Vogel and John Walton, who are both good friends of his.
The Washington Capitals have had no trouble finding talented rookies to add to their roster this season. The young guns on the Capitals’ roster, like Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas, and others, have been instrumental in stabilizing the club despite the never-ending roster adjustments necessary due to COVID and injuries. Alan May of NBC Sports Washington, this defender established himself as the clear front-runner for the title ‘greatest Capitals rookie’ in 2021-22.
February, 22 years old, came in early in the year to take over for Michal Kempny, who had been sent down to AHL Hershey before the start of the regular season. Although it was anticipated that the young defenseman would serve as a stopgap, he has consistently impressed Washington. He has become one of the most dependable players on the club.
While playing with John Carlson on the top defensive pair in the NHL, he has the most hits of any rookie defenseman in the league and is in the top five in blocked shots. In his first year as a professional, he has only turned the ball over a handful of times while ranking fourth on the Capitals’ +/- chart with a score of +12.
February and Carlson are the ideal complements to one another to underpin Washington’s defense. Carlson has never been a more defensive-minded player than an offensive-minded one. The Capitals can attack both ends of the game when the combination is on the ice since they are paired with a skilled and powerful defense. This has allowed Carlson to rank third in the club in point production with 32.
