Amanda Marshal Bio

Amanda Meta Marshall is a Canadian pop-rock vocalist born on the 29th of August in 1972. She has published four studio albums, the first of which was awarded the prestigious Diamond certification in Canada; the subsequent albums were awarded three times platinum and platinum, respectively. The song “Birmingham,” which she released in 1996, brought her the most success. It peaked at number three in Canada and was her lone entry in the US charts.

In Ontario, the city of Toronto is where Marshall was born. She describes herself as “the product of an interracial marriage” and says she was an only child throughout her childhood. Her mother is from Trinidad, while her father is White. Marshall has focused on her racial identity “as a woman who looks white but is black” in several of her songs. She describes herself as “a woman who looks white but is black.”

Throughout her infancy, Marshall pursued an intense education in music, attending prestigious institutions such as the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. While still in her teens, she played in the bar scene on Queen Street West. Then, she met guitarist Jeff Healey, who was blown away by her vital voice and took her on tour for a significant amount of time.

In 1991, Marshall entered a recording deal with Metalblade Records; however, both parties eventually concluded they were not a suitable match for one another and parted ways. In 1994, Marshall got a recording contract with Epic Records, and in the same year, he contributed to the Neil Young tribute album titled Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute to Neil Young. The following year, in 1996, she released her self-titled first album named Amanda Marshall.

The album was a massive smash in Canada, receiving a lot of radio and giving birth to six Top 40 songs, including “Let It Rain,” “Beautiful Goodbye,” “Dark Horse,” “Fall From Grace,” “Sitting on Top of the World,” and “Birmingham,” which was her biggest hit in Canada and the only song to reach the US charts. Marshall’s song “This Could Take All Night” was included on the film Tin Cup’s original soundtrack, released in 1996.

Marshall’s song “I’ll Be Okay” was included on the original soundtrack of My Best Friend’s Wedding, released in 1997. When Elton John was a guest on The Rosie Show, he mentioned Amanda as an artist whose work he was presently enjoying and was listening to at the time of his appearance. This was a big boost for Amanda’s career. Her subsequent album, Tuesday’s Child, was released in 1999 and was met with critical acclaim. Her second album continued in the same style as her first one, consisting of deep pop tunes and ballads showcasing her strong vocals.

The song “Ride” from the album was used in The Replacements and on the film’s soundtrack. During the fall of 1999, she served as an opening act for Whitney Houston on the European leg of the My Love Is Your Love World Tour. Another piece from that album, titled “Believe in You,” was used in the film Kermit’s Swamp Years and an episode of the television show Touched by an Angel. “Believe in You” was also included on the soundtrack for the television show.

The single “Why Don’t You Love Me” featured Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora as a guest guitarist. In addition, she collaborated with Carole King on the composition of the song “Right Here All Along,” on which Carole King sang backing vocals. At the 2000 Juno Awards, she was up for best songwriter, ultimately winning.

Everybody’s Got a Story was Marshall’s third studio album, and it was released in the year 2001. It heralded a transition for Marshall regarding its aesthetic and sound, with an apparent R&B influence coming through. Her songs “Everybody’s Got a Story” and “Sunday Morning After” had some attention in Canada, and for the album, Marshall collaborated with the likes of Peter Asher and Billy Mann. Her album also garnered some broadcasts in Canada.

Marshall’s hiatus from the music industry was caused by her engaging in legal disputes with her record company after she parted ways with her management in 2002. These conflicts were not settled for close to a decade and a half. She first published the most excellent hits album in 2003, Intermission: The Singles Collection, and then released another excellent hits album, Collections, in 2006. Both of these albums were released between 2003 and 2006.

Another greatest hits CD, The Steel Box Collection, was made public in 2008. During an interview on a radio program in 2012, Marshall said that she was in the process of recording a new album. During the conversation, she told the radio program presenter that “a new CD is in the works” and that she was “hopeful” that it would be released in 2013. Sadly, this did not come to pass. She said the record was “70% done” in an article she had written.

Marshall announced her upcoming tour throughout Canada and the release of her new album, Heavy Lifting, on March 27, 2023. The album was released on June 9, 2023. On March 31, 2023, she issued the first single from that album, titled “I Hope She Cheats.” It was a rendition of Marsha Ambrosius’s song “Hope She Cheats on You (With a Basketball Player),” which she had previously recorded and published.

On June 29, Marshall will perform at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton as part of his tour supporting the album Heavy Lifting, released earlier this year. It is her first album and tour since she withdrew from the public eye in 2001, and the early meet-and-greets are a monument to both the loyalty of her geographically far-flung followers and confirmation that her 20-plus years away from writing and performing has made many a heart grow fonder. It is her first album and tour since she withdrew from the public eye in 2001.

Over more than 20 years, music by Marshall has been almost impossible to avoid hearing on Canadian radio. Nevertheless, the singer-songwriter was mostly absent from public view throughout that period. Now, she is returning with the release of her fresh new album Heavy Lifting. Marshall opens up to the presenter of Q, Tom Power, about why she has been absent for such a significant amount of time, what it was like to have Elton John speak about her music on TV in the early days of her career, and what it has been like to be of mixed race while working in the music business.

A fresh original song collection named Heavy Lifting is scheduled to be released by diamond-selling and multi-JUNO Award-nominated singer-songwriter Amanda Marshall this summer. The first single from the album, titled “I Hope She Cheats,” is scheduled to be released this coming Friday, March 31st, on all streaming platforms.

In addition, Marshall will be performing across Canadian stages as part of his “25 & Counting: The Heavy Lifting Tour.” This cross-country tour will begin on June 11, 2023, in Moncton, New Brunswick. It will stop nationwide, including appearances at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the Massey Hall in Toronto. For February and March, the tour will include special guest Sophia Fracassi, named “One to Watch 2023” by Kiss Radio.
