Arsenio Hall Bio

In addition to acting and standup, Arsenio Hall has also been a comedian and talk show host in the United States. He tried stand-up comedy in Chicago and was soon “discovered,” going on to open for the likes of Aretha Franklin. Known for hosting the first Black late-night talk show, he appeared in the films Coming to America and Harlem Nights in the 1980s. The Arsenio Hall Show, his ground-breaking talk show, aired from 1989 to 1994. Aside from his work on other TV shows, he returned to hosting his own late-night show in 2013 and 2014.

Arsenio Hall was born on February 12th, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents are Fred and Anne, a preacher and a homemaker, respectively. When Hall was six, his parents divorced. He started performing magic at bar mitzvahs and weddings when he was seven years old after becoming interested in it as a kid.

He initially enrolled at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where he studied communications before transferring to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where he received his bachelor’s degree. Although he began his career in advertising, he moved to Chicago in 1979 and began performing stand-up comedy, where he was “discovered” by singer Nancy Wilson at a comedy club. A number of musicians who have worked with him in the past have said he has helped them land new opportunities. Hall appeared on a variety of comedic and musical shows in the 1980s, including Solid Gold, Motown Revue, and The New Love American Style. He also hosted a show called The Half-Hour Comedy Hour, which lasted for only half an hour before it was canceled. ‘Amazon Women on the Moon’ was his first feature film role. Eddie Murphy and Hall appeared in two films together: Coming to America (1988), a box-office smash, and Harlem Nights (1989).

Hall, on the other hand, had already tapped into what would eventually become his most lucrative career venture in 1987. On The Late Show, he replaced Joan Rivers as host. His lighthearted, playful, and occasionally risqué banter was well received by the general public. A syndicated late-night talk show opportunity arose as a result of his success. The Arsenio Hall Show was born two years later. Paramount and Arsenio Hall Productions were both involved in the show’s production, so Hall had hosting and executive producing responsibilities as part of his contract.

The fact that Hall was the first Black host of a late-night talk show makes him unique because he gave to rap and hip-hop artists as well as controversial guests like Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan their first and, for a time, only platform.

Due to his earlier start time and use of newer, younger talent than Carson’s established rival, Hall drew a younger, more hip audience to The Tonight Show. Dog Pound “Woof! Woof!” (pushing fist) chant made the show famous, and Paula Abdul, En Vogue, and Bill Clinton all appeared on the show.

The late-night host left NBC for CBS to start his own Late Show to compete with Leno after Carson retired in 1992 and Jay Leno was selected as his successor over David Letterman (whose show followed Carson’s). Leno began to steal Hall’s young audience away, and Letterman, who had a devoted young audience for years, did the same. In a later interview, Hall acknowledged that despite the decline in viewership, the show was still profitable, and he opted to leave to pursue other creative endeavors and to relax. The final episode of The Arsenio Hall Show aired on May 27, 1994.

A Key of Life Award for his work as “a crusader in the fight for human rights” and another for his show was given to Hall by the NAACP in 1991. He worked with Danny Glover, Alfre Woodward, and Malcolm McDowell on the apartheid story Bopha!, which was directed by Morgan Freeman and featured Danny Glover, Alfre Woodward, and Malcolm McDowell.

Vivica A. Fox starred in Hall’s short-lived 1997 sitcom Arsenio, which he returned to television after a three-year absence from the spotlight. He appeared frequently on the TV show Martial Law in 1998 and 1999.

From 2003 to 2004, Hall hosted a new season of the televised talent competition Star Search. Access Hollywood Live and Piers Morgan Tonight both featured him as a guest co-host. Celebrity edition of Donald Trump’s hit reality shows The Apprentice saw Hall showcasing his business acumen in 2012. The Magic Johnson Foundation beat out the likes of rapper T.I., rocker Dee Snider, and American Idol contestant Clay Aiken to win the top prize. Hall returned to television in the fall of 2013 when CBS Television and the Tribune Co. revived his syndicated talk show. The father decided to return to the format after realizing he missed his previous work and after receiving encouragement from his adolescent son.

‘I used to watch Arsenio when I was in college,'” Hall told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. As a result, they can now sit around with their kid who is old enough to stay up late, and there will be plenty of stuff for them to enjoy together.

Aside from Coming to America, Arsenio has appeared on other shows and films like Martial Law, Star Search, and Harlem Nights (1989). His role as Alan Thicker’s sidekick on the talk show Thicke of the Night made him a household name. Hall won Celebrity Apprentice 5 on NBC in 2012, and he’s since become a television personality.

Arsenio is a father to a son, born in 1998 to him and his wife. His wife and children have vanished without a trace. Hall took a year off to raise his son after he was born, and he returned to hosting in 2013.

Even though Hall had expressed an interest in returning to show business in the future, he didn’t confirm his plans until an appearance on Lopez. In the year 2009, tonight (although he initially considered a weekend show because he did not want to compete in ratings against his friend George Lopez) A few years later, Hall made a few appearances on Soul Train after moving to Chicago and then Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy. Thicke of the Night, Alan Thicke’s short-lived talk show, featured him as Alan’s announcer/sidekick in 1984 (a role for which he has on occasion noted his confusion with Monty Hall).

During the years 1983 to 1984, Hall appeared on five weeks’ worth of the NBC game show Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour. From 1986 to 1987, he starred as Winston Zeddemore in the animated series The Real Ghostbusters as the show’s original Winston Zeddemore. The year was 1988, and he and Eddie Murphy were co-stars in the comedy film Coming to America. After Sinéad O’Connor claimed Hall had fueled Prince’s drug habit and also spiked her drink at Eddie Murphy’s house party, he sued for $5 million in defamation on May 5, 2016.

After O’Connor apologized and retracted her claim that he had supplied Prince with drugs, Hall decided to drop the case. The Arsenio Hall Show, a revival of Hall’s syndicated late-night talk show, debuted on Tribune-owned stations and other networks via CBS Television Distribution on September 9, 2013. After only one season, it was axed because of the low viewership. The most recent episode of the rebooted series aired on May 30th, 2014.

Hall appeared on the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice in 2012, which premiered on February 19th. Specifically, the Magic Johnson Foundation seeks to increase economic and social equality by getting minorities involved in all aspects of their communities, increasing academic and innovative achievement, and increasing public awareness of HIV/AIDS, treatment, and prevention. While Hall and Aubrey O’Day had a falling out, he was friends with the vast majority of the cast as a whole.

On May 20, 2012, Hall was chosen by billionaire real estate investor and future U.S. President Donald Trump as the Celebrity Apprentice winner, beating out fellow finalist singer Clay Aiken in a live season finale. Hall won $250,000 for his charity as part of the grand prize for winning The Celebrity Apprentice, plus any money he earned as a team leader on the show for tasks he and his team won for their charity.

In addition, he made frequent appearances on The Jay Leno Show and Lopez Tonight as a guest. More times than any other comedian, George Lopez has appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show thanks to Arsenio, who he says gave him the idea for a late-night show. In recognition of Lopez’s admiration for Hall, he asked him to join him on Lopez Tonight (November 25, 2009) as a co-host. While guest-hosting Access Hollywood Live (2011) and Piers Morgan Tonight (2012) on CNN, Hall has also appeared on NBC.

Hall had a shot at hosting syndication of Deal or No Deal after filming a pilot for the show (there were six taped). However, Howie Mandel had been selected as the host by the time the syndicated series debuted on September 8, 2008.He initially enrolled at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where he studied communications before transferring to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Hall made an appearance as himself on Chappelle’s Show in March 2004 when Chappelle imagined “what Arsenio is doing right now” in a dinner scene when convinced by the Swedish comedy director Saman Khadiri. KLSX 97.1 FM’s The Tim Conway Jr. Show features Hall as a guest co-host every Wednesday night. The World’s Funniest Moments on MyNetworkTV and the 100 Greatest Black Power Moves on TV One were also hosted by Hall. A discussion about the 1992 Los Angeles riots aired on Real Time with Bill Maher in May 2012, and Hall was a guest on both shows.

Hall and his wife have one child, who was born in 1998. Since the birth of his son, Arsenio Hall has spent the majority of his time raising him before returning to The Arsenio Hall Show in 2013. His return to show business wasn’t confirmed until his appearance on George Lopez Tonight in 2009, when Hall expressed interest in hosting a weekend show instead of competing in the ratings with his friend George Lopez.

Arsenio Hall had a Paramount contract to host a nationally syndicated late-night talk show from January 2, 1989, until May 27, 1994. As a result, the show became a late-night smash hit, particularly with the show’s target audience of 18-34-year-olds, who would chant, “Roo, Roo, Roo!” while pumping their fists as an alternative to applause. After a few years, the ritual had evolved into a “pop culture stamp of approval,” according to Hall, who said the practice had grown “too popular to be bothersome.” Films like Pretty Woman, Aladdin, and The Hard Way all used the gesture to show how popular it had become among the general public.

Arsenio Hall released an album titled “Large and In Charge” under the guise of Chunky A. Guests on the album include Paula Abdul, Wil Wheaton, and Ice-T.

He competed in forensics (competition speech) at Ohio University. Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson’s voice actress) and Leon Harris (CNN’s morning anchor) were also members of the team. He graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Speech (1977).

Warrensville Heights High School in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, where I attended and graduated (1973). It was in 1989 that Yvette Nicole Brown graduated from the institution.

After Joan Rivers was sacked from the new Fox late-night talk show, The Late Show (1986), he was the most popular of several rotating guests who took over as host in 1987. His own show, The Arsenio Hall Show, was then distributed by Paramount and became an instant hit (1989). Hall and Rivers are close friends, and Hall invited Rivers to appear on his new Paramount television show.

As a teenager, he was a skilled illusionist. Who’s Who in Comedy by Ronald L. Smith, page 202-204. Facts on File, New York, 1992. 978-816023387 In the spring of 1992, Central State University awarded me an honorary degree (Doctor of Humane Letters).

The late 1970s and early 1980s: Master of Ceremonies at Chicago’s Sheba Lounge. As a singer’s opening act, he was praised and urged by Nancy Wilson to pursue a career.

On November 7, 1990, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6776 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood. On the American version of Deal or No Deal, he hosted some of the early pilot episodes (2005).

Actor who provided the voice of Winston Zeddemore in the animated series The Real Ghostbusters (1986), beating over Ernie Hudson, who had previously voiced Zeddemore in the theatrical films of the same name (1989). After arriving at the audition, Hall was surprised to see Hudson auditioning for the role Hudson played in the films. Buster Jones, who replaced Hall, reprised the character in an episode of Extreme Ghostbusters (1997).

When his late-night talk program faced off against The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno, which was then the cover story of Entertainment Weekly, he said he would “kick Leno’s ass” in the ratings (1992). Shortly after Leno’s numbers smashed Hall’s, Hall’s show was canceled.

His only child with Cheryl Bonacci is Arsenio Cheron Hall Jr; they have a daughter together (born 1999). The Late Show (1986) utilized him as Joan Rivers’ substitute before he had a talk show of his own. The good news for Hall is that he obtained the job only because she had quit her previous employment due to the unfair treatment she had received from the show’s producers.

Watching Don Cornelius on Soul Train as a child was his favorite source of inspiration (1971). Eddie Murphy and I are good pals. One of the best friends you can have is Nancy Wilson. When he was just 31 years old, Joan Rivers took him under her wing and became his mentor. 27 years later, Rivers’ passing in 2014, the two remained close friends.

Joan Rivers is his favorite mentor and dearest friend, according to the actor. The success of his talk program, which he hosts with Joan Rivers, has been well praised. Joan Rivers had a profound impact on his career as a television host. It is said that Joan Rivers, who sadly passed away in 2004, was his biggest inspiration.

(When asked if he’s been married before) No. For some reason, I’ve never been able to fathom the benefits of getting married. I enjoy being with others, but I don’t think marriage is the right choice for me. Arsenio is my name. For a black man, that’s an uncommon given name. It means Leroy in Greek.

This [2013 show] could be confusing to someone who has never done a talk show before. In reality, it’s going to appear as though Arsenio went on hiatus for an extended period of time, then I returned and redid the set… People from Jay [Leno] and Jimmy Kimmel will not be taken from Conan [O’Brien]. My audience will come via iPads, radios, and other digital devices. People who don’t have a talk-show host will be the ones to make the announcements. The folks around me are saying “Is he crazy?” when I repeat this.

[during a 2013 appearance on his talk show] Ever see a picture of a young black girl doing the Dutch double? As soon as the doors open, there’s always one little girl standing in line. And you need to find your groove. That’s exactly what I’ve been up to lately.. This is what I’ve been doing: waiting for the door to open again… You need to keep the rope from slamming against your toes. Make sure you’re not overweight or out of shape so you can keep going.
