Asa Butterfield Bio

Maxwell Asa Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield is a British actor who rose to prominence after playing the role of Hugo Cabret in Martin Scorsese’s drama film “Hugo.” Born and raised in London, Butterfield started attending the Young Actors’ Theatre Islington on Friday afternoons when he was only seven years old.

His first appearance on TV was in the television movie “After Thomas,” which aired in 2006. About a year later, he debuted in the motion picture industry in the drama-thriller “Son of Rambow.” In 2008, he starred as the main character Bruno in the Holocaust movie “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,” which gained him a lot of critical accolades. After the film “Hugo” was released, Asa Butterfield became one of the most gifted and well-liked young actors working on the worldwide market.

Not only did the movie earn him several honors, but it also led to his being cast as Ender Wiggin in ‘Ender’s Game,’ Nathan Ellis in ‘X+Y,’ Jacob “Jake” Portman in ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,’ and Gardner Elliot in ‘The Space Between Us,’ among other roles. In addition to his work as an actor, Butterfield is also involved in the music industry as a musician and music producer, and he has co-designed a video game for Apple.

He was born on April 1st, 1997, in Islington, London. He has one older sister. He is the youngest of three children; his older brother is Morgan, and his sisters are Loxie and Marlie. Although Butterfield was given the moniker “Maxwell Thornton” at birth, he subsequently changed it to “Bopp” on his passport (after the Hale-Bopp comet), reflecting his interest in astronomy. He received his secondary education at Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form in London. After finishing his classes on Friday afternoons, he would go to the Young Actors’ Theatre Islington to perform.

The relationship between Asa Butterfield and Ella Purnell, an English actor, ended in the past. In 2015, they first started dating. However, they broke up not long after. There are rumors that he is now seeing the Bulgarian-Canadian actress Nina Dobrev, although either side has proved anything. Asa Butterfield was discovered by a talent-spotting casting director when he was only eight years old. The discovery took place at the Young Actors’ Theatre Islington.

In 2006, he debuted in the television movie “After Thomas,” which began his professional acting career. Butterfield had a minor part in the film as Andrew. Son of Rambow, a comedic feature film, was his first job in the film industry and was released in 2007. The year after, he had a recurring role in the British crime thriller “Ashes to Ashes,” which aired on BBC One.

The film ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ was directed by Mark Herman and released in 2008; he appeared in one of the starring parts. Jack Scanlon was cast in the other leading role. The film was a Holocaust drama based on John Boyne’s book of the same name. Butterfield portrayed Bruno, the young son of a Nazi officer, while Scanlon played Shmuel, a Jewish youngster who had been thrown in a concentration camp. Butterfield’s performance was described as dark, sad, and forceful, and it was primarily responsible for drawing the attention of the reviewers.

In 2008, he was chosen to play the recurring character of Mordred in the popular fantasy-adventure series Merlin. His second significant part occurred in 2010 when he was cast alongside Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maggie Smith, and Ewan McGregor in the comedic fantasy family picture “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.” Maggie Smith directed the film.

In the movie ‘Ender’s Game,’ which came out in 2013, Butterfield played the role of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin. Despite reviews that ranged from negative to favorable for the movie, the critics had a lot of good things to say about his portrayal as the hero. In the British film ‘X+Y’ (2014), which was released in the US under the name ‘A Brilliant Young Mind,’ Butterfield portrays a socially awkward English mathematical prodigy who is chosen to represent his country in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The film was released in the US under ‘The Imitation Game.’

In the drama ‘Ten Thousand Saints,’ he starred as the main character in 2015; he was the protagonist. The movie, which also stars Ethan Hawke, Hailee Steinfeld, and Emilio Hirsch, had its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23rd, 2015. The following year, he was offered the role of Jacob “Jake” Portman in the movie “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which is a dark fantasy picture.

In 2017, he participated in producing three films and had a guest-starring role in the animated science fiction series “Thunderbirds Are Go.” In the romantic science fiction film “The Space Between Us,” Butterfield played the role of Gardner Elliot, a kid born and raised on Mars. He also played Sebastian Prendergast in “The House of Tomorrow” and Second Lieutenant Raleigh in the film version of the play “Journey’s End” by R. C. Sherriff.

He will soon be seen in several movies, including “Time Freak,” “Departures,” and “Slaughterhouse Rulez.” Butterfield created a mashup in 2004 using the tracks “Making Plans For Nigel” by XTC and “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus. In April 2013, the turn-based video game “Racing Blind” was made available for the iPad. He collaborated on this project with both of his parents and his brother.

Asa Butterfield’s performance in ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ earned him a nomination for the British Independent Film Award in the category of “Most Promising Newcomer” in 2008; however, Dev Patel’s work in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ ultimately won the award. Butterfield received other nominations for the same role, including one for the London Film Critics Circle Award for Young British Performer of the Year.

He was awarded the Young Hollywood Award for Breakthrough Performance in the Male Category for his work in Hugo. In addition, the film helped him win the Sierra Award for Youth in Film at the 2011 Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards event and the NFCS Award for Best Child Actor in 2012.
