Benjamin Joseph Manaly Novak was born in Newton, which is located in Massachusetts. His most notable performance was as Ryan Howard on the critically acclaimed television sitcom The Office (2005). Jesse and Lev are his younger brothers, and they are his younger siblings. B.J. attended Newton South High School, where he was in the same class as John Krasinski, who would later become his co-star on The Office.
He attended Harvard University, majored in English and Spanish literature, and was also an active member of The Harvard Lampoon, the university’s official humor journal. Following graduation, B.J. relocated to California to pursue a career in stand-up comedy and began appearing in clubs around the Los Angeles area. Although he worked as a writer on the comedy Raising Dad (2001), which starred Bob Saget, Kat Dennings, and Brie Larson, the program only ran briefly.
He received his first acting credit on the hidden-camera celebrity prank program Punk’d (2003). Ashton Kutcher was the show’s host. Greg Daniels, a screenwriter and producer, saw one of B.J.’s stand-up comedy performances and decided he wanted to collaborate. Consequently, B.J. was cast as Ryan Howard on The Office in 2005. He was a part of the cast and a writer for the program he was working on. During the seventh season, he was promoted to executive producer and even directed several show episodes. During the ninth season of “The Office,” he quit the show but returned for the series’ last episode.
B.J. first appeared in supporting roles in the films Unaccompanied Minors (2006), Knocked Up (2007), and Reign Over Me (2007) before moving on to more significant parts in the movies Inglorious Bastards (2009), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), and The Founder (2016). The original The Smurfs (2011) and its sequel, The Smurfs 2 (2013), featured him as the voice of Baker Smurfs.
B.J. has portrayed the role of Lucas on HBO’s The Newsroom (2014) and has also featured in a few episodes of The Mindy Project (2013), where he served as a consulting producer for the show’s first season. In addition, B.J. has starred in a few episodes of The Mindy Project (2013).
B.J. was the man behind the scenes of the anthology series The Premise (2021), which was shown on FX in 2021. He served as the show’s writer, director, and executive producer. B.J. is known for his work in the film industry, but he is also a novelist. His first work, a collection of short pieces of fiction titled One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories, was released in 2014. In 2014, he also had his second book, titled The Book With No Pictures, which was written specifically for young readers, released.
He published an interactive companion book to accompany The Book With No Pictures, encouraging young readers to create their narratives by filling in the spaces in the story. B.J. returned to the silver screen in the leading role in Vengeance (2022), a mystery comedy picture about a podcaster covering the death of a female he hooked up with in the past. B.J.’s absence from the big screen lasted for many years. It was initially scheduled to make its debut in 2020. However, manufacturing was pushed back because of COVID-19. B.J. was not only in the movie, but he also wrote and directed it.
He has been considered for several ladies, including Emmy nominations for his performance on The Office. Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series was the category in which he and his co-stars on “The Office” were recognized and awarded two Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2006 and another in 2007.
In 2006, the program was also honored with a Writer’s Guild of America Award for Comedy Series. The dating pattern of B.J. and Mindy Kaling, as shown in The Office, was similar to their actual relationship. They are still very involved in one another’s life to this very day. Both of Mindy’s children have chosen B.J. to be their godfather.
On April 11, 2013, the publishing firm Alfred A. Knopf announced that it had secured a seven-figure, two-book deal with Novak. The first book in the contract was planned to be a collection of fiction tales similar to those written by Woody Allen. One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories, a group of sixty-four short stories, was released on February 4, 2014, and it remained on the New York Times Best Sellers List for Hardcover Fiction for six weeks.
In addition, Novak penned “The Book With No Pictures,” published by Penguin’s imprint for children’s books on September 30, 2014, after signing a contract with that imprint. Since its first publication, The Book With No Pictures has been featured on the New York Times Best Seller Picture Books List for 174 weeks, including 34 weeks at the top spot.
This occurred as of January 2021. The most current ranking for it, in September 2020, was at position #10. Novak, who has said that he has been an avid reader for the whole of his life, has claimed that he authored the children’s book in part because “to me, there is no more meaningful, important, or exciting rule to introduce to children than the power of the written word.”
It was announced on November 19, 2019, that a fill-in-the-blanks companion book to The Book with No Pictures called My Book with No Pictures would be produced. This book would let youngsters construct their tales. On October 14, 2015, Novak and Dev Flaherty, the company’s co-founders, developed an app for Apple iOS called The List App.
The application was shortlisted for a Webby Award in 2016. However, it was ultimately beaten out of the running by Beme and Pocket in their respective category. The application was renamed ‘li.st’ and released for use on the Android platform in May 2016. Because so few people were using the app, it was discontinued in September 2017.
The year 2023 saw Disney engage Novak to rewrite the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty into a screenplay for a live-action film adaptation. As the source of his inspiration for the writing, Novak highlighted his time spent as a godfather “around kids” and his forty years looking for love. FX (TV Channel) canceled his last program to make more room in his schedule. By giving him a role in “Saving Mr. Banks,” Disney forced him to put this “rumor” into action.
