Bill de Blasio Bio

Bill de Blasio is an American politician who served as the 109th mayor of New York City from 2014 to 2021. His birth name was Warren Wilhelm Jr., born on May 8, 1961. He subsequently changed his name to Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm. He was elected to the New York City Public Advocate position in 2010 and served until 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Although he was born in Manhattan, most of his childhood was spent in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After receiving his degrees from New York University and Columbia University, he worked as a campaign manager for both Charles Rangel and Hillary Clinton for short periods. De Blasio began his political career by being elected to the New York City Council in 2002 and serving as the representative for the 39th district in Brooklyn until 2009.

After completing one term as a public advocate, he was elected as the Mayor of New York City in 2013 and reelected in 2017. Blasio’s policy measures included improved de-escalation training for police officers, decreased prosecutions for cannabis possession, adoption of police body cameras, and terminating the post-9/11 monitoring program of Muslim neighborhoods. Other initiatives included reducing prosecutions for cannabis possession and implementing police body cameras.

During his first tenure as Mayor of the City, he oversaw implementing a program that made pre-kindergarten education available to all city residents at no cost. During his first campaign, Mayor Bill de Blasio drew attention to what he describes as a “tale of two cities” in New York City, which he refers to as “stark economic inequality” in the city. Regarding the city’s economics, urban planning, public education, relations with the police, and privatization, he advocated for policies that were socially liberal and progressive.

De Blasio was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in the primaries held in 2020. He halted his candidacy on September 20, 2019, due to receiving poor poll ratings and failing to qualify for the third round of primary debates. Five months later, he backed Bernie Sanders as the Democratic presidential candidate.

Because of New York City’s term limits, Bill de Blasio could not run for mayor of New York City for a third time in the 2021 election. Beginning on January 1, 2022, Eric Adams became his successor. On May 20, 2022, he announced that he would compete in the 2022 United States House of Representatives election in the 10th congressional district, which had just undergone redistricting. On July 19, he announced that he would no longer be running for office, citing his desire to “retire from electoral politics.”

His mother, Maria de Blasio, received her education at Smith College, worked as an information specialist for the United States Office of War Information during World War II, and published The Other Italy: The Italian Resistance in World War II in 1988. His grandfather, who earned a degree from Yale University, was an editor for Time magazine and contributed articles there. He enrolled in the United States Army in 1942 during World War II.

His left leg was amputated below the knee when a grenade exploded underneath it during the 82-day Battle of Okinawa. The explosion occurred below his left foot. In 1945, shortly after being awarded a Purple Heart, he wed Maria and soon after began working as a budget analyst for the federal government. Maria and Warren were accused of having a “sympathetic interest in Communism” at the height of the Red Scare in the 1950s. This occurred during the decade of the 1950s.

Following Warren’s promotion to the position of chief international economist for Texaco, Maria accepted a role in the public relations department of the Italian embassy in Connecticut. When Warren was given a place at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1966, the family uprooted and relocated there. That same year, de Blasio started kindergarten there. After that, Maria and her extended family cared for Bill and his brother Donald and reared them.

“My mother and father split up very early on when I came along, and my mother’s family brought me up—that’s the bottom line—the de Blasio family,” de Blasio remarked about his early life. At 18, Bill de Blasio’s father took his own life as he struggled to cope with the terminal effects of lung cancer. De Blasio received his diploma from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1979. While there, he was active in student government and earned the nickname “Senator Provolone” from his classmates.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in metropolitan studies from New York University, where he completed a program in urban studies and a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He was awarded the Harry S. Truman Scholarship in 1981. De Blasio began his career in the field of juvenile justice in 1984 when he joined the Urban Fellows Program at the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice.

In 1987, soon after de Blasio completed his graduate studies at Columbia, he was employed by the Quixote Center in Maryland to serve as a political organizer. This was just after de Blasio had graduated. In 1988, he went to Nicaragua for ten days with the Quixote Center to assist in distributing food and medication during the Nicaraguan Revolution. He was there with the organization. De Blasio was an enthusiastic admirer of the socialist administration at the time.

The Sandinista National Liberation Front, which the Reagan administration at the time saw as a threat to national security. After completing his service in Nicaragua, de Blasio relocated to New York City and found employment with a charitable organization whose mission was to enhance the standard of medical treatment across Central America.
