Black Thought birth in 3 October 1971 (age 51 years), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Even by the standards of such a controversial band as the Roots, the hip-hop acts Black Thought and the Roots have taken unorthodox approaches throughout their careers. In contrast to most rappers, Black Thought does not want notoriety and has seldom participated in interviews over the group’s 20-year history. On October 3, 1972, Black Thought was given the name Tariq Luqmaan Trotter as the name of his birth. He spent his childhood in the Point Breeze area in the southern section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The truths about his upbringing were disheartening, yet he managed to keep them hidden from view for many years. His mother passed away while he was in the 11th grade, and his father, who was a member of the Nation of Islam’s Fruit of Islam police arm, was murdered when he was still an infant. His father was also a member of the Fruit of Islam. Black Thought’s brother, Keith, has a lengthy arrest and conviction history.
On the other hand, Black Thought himself seems to have transformed his responses into creative output. When he was nine years old, he began rapping, and by the time he was 15, he had gained a spot at the elite High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) in Philadelphia. Ahmir-Kalib “Questlove” Thompson, another member of The Roots, said to Farber that “what distinguished Tariq was that he possessed an amazing talent to play the dozens,” a competitive form of improvised insult poetry.
In 1987, the two individuals came together to create a duet that would later be known as the Square Roots. They took their drum-and-rap performance to various clubs and talent events. They did not need any technological equipment, which allowed them the freedom to move their show to the corner of Fifth Street and Passyunk Avenue in downtown Philadelphia. There, they collected around $4,000 in tips during the summer of 1992.
In Philadelphia, the communities of Mount Airy and Point Breeze were where Tariq Luqmaan Trotter spent his childhood. His formative years were fraught with upheaval and misfortune. His father was murdered only a few months before his first birthday. When he was just six years old, he accidentally started a fire in his family’s home. While in high school, he was involved in the distribution of crack cocaine. Eventually, his uncle persuaded him to leave the dangerous streets of Philadelphia and go to Detroit with other family members. His mother, who had battled an addiction to crack cocaine, was stabbed to death shortly after he returned to his hometown. Trotter met the percussionist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson when he was attending the High School for Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Since the beginning of the Roots’ rise to prominence, Black Thought has appeared as a guest artist on scores of tracks. In 1998, he collaborated with producer J. Tacuma, better known as jazz bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, to create a pair of 12″ recordings distributed by the P-Vine label in Japan.
A couple of years later, there was a song called “Hardware,” which was released on a 12″ record by MCA and was touted to be “the first joint from the first solo album Masterpiece Theater.” Although some of its components were included in the Roots’ Phrenology album, the project was ultimately scrapped.
The Square Roots evolved into the Roots, added more members (bassist Hub [Leonard Nelson Hubbard], rapper Malik B. [Malik-Abdul Basit], and “beatboxer” human percussionist Rahzel), and became well-known in the surrounding area for their live, acoustic rendition of hip-hop music. Around 1993, the Roots saw a rapid acceleration in the pace of their success. They received an invitation to perform at a festival in Germany; after that, they also created an album called Organix and leveraged their first performance into a tour around Europe.
