Brian May Bio

Brian May is a well-known English guitarist, musician, and composer who is also an astrophysicist. He is a member of the band Queen. He went on to become a superstar in the field of ‘rock’ music, selling more records than ‘The Beatles did while having a trademark hairstyle that contradicts the image of a scientist. May began playing the guitar when he was just 7 years old and formed his first band at school when he was in third grade. It was astounding for his family and friends who knew him at the time and discovered his enthusiasm for music and science, which, when combined, served him extremely well.

After that, he attempted to get a doctorate in Astrophysics at Imperial College in London, but he dropped out in the middle of his studies to capitalize on the success of his rock band, Queen. He contributed to the band by composing several compositions and even penned a few rather successful songs. May’s music albums have reached number one on the music charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States. These albums include several guitar solos, covers, and collaborations with great musicians.

After a break of thirty years, he enrolled in graduate school to get his doctorate while simultaneously continuing to do live performances all around the globe. Brian Harold May was the only child of his parents, Harold and Ruth May. He was born in Hampton, which is located in London. He received his education at Hampton Grammar School and in 1984 he and Tim Staffell established their first band.

After completing ten GCE Ordinary Levels and three A-levels, he enrolled in Imperial College, London, to get a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics. During this time, he also worked as a teacher. Smile was an English rock band that was created in 1968 by May and Tim Stafell, along with drummer Roger Taylor. After just two years together, the band broke up due to Staffell’s departure.

In 1970, he and Roger Taylor became members of the legendary British rock band Queen, which was already comprised of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. Not only did he provide his voice to several songs, but he also created tunes for the band regularly. After seeing the historic performance of “Live Aid” in 1985, the band collaborated on writing the song “One Vision.”

After that, in 1983, he worked with Eddie Van Halen to record his first solo effort, which was titled “Star Fleet Project.” Additionally, he contributed guitar work to Steve Hackett’s album “Feedback 86,” for which he is known. He contributed the songs ‘I Want It All’ and ‘Scandal’ to the band’s album ‘The Miracle’, which was released in 1989. In the same year, he collaborated with other bands such as “Black Sabbath” and “Living In a Box,” contributing guitar solos to a track on each of their albums.

He was able to come to terms with the loss of Freddie Mercury, who passed away in 1991, by committing himself to his job and completing his solo album, “Back to the Light,” which was released the year after Mercury’s passing. In 1992, he succeeded in putting together “The Brian May Band.” However, since he was dissatisfied with the dynamic that existed amongst the members of the group, he decided to replace a significant number of them the next year.

In 1995, May began contributing to cinematic projects, and at the same time, he was also working on a cover album that was going to be named “Heroes.”During the Motorhead 25th Anniversary event, he participated as a special guest with Eddie Clarke in the performance of the song “Overkill.”Following the band’s statement in 2004 that they would be traveling with Paul Rodgers, Brian May and Roger Taylor got back together, and the band went on tour under the moniker “Queen + Paul Rodgers.”

The band spent the following two years traveling all over the globe. In 2007, he went back to Imperial College London to finish the doctoral program in astrophysics that he had previously abandoned to pursue his ambitions in the music industry. The year 2008 saw the publication of Queen+ Paul Rodgers’ first solo album, titled “The Cosmos Rocks.” After this, the band embarked on yet another tour of the globe before disbanding the next year.

In 2011, Queen performed at the MTV Europe Music Awards with Adam Lambert. Due to the very favorable audience reaction, Queen and Adam Lambert were invited to play not one but two gigs in London in 2012, after which they traveled to Ukraine and Moscow. Queen had a performance at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London the same year.

Singles such as ‘Tie Your Mother Down,’ ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘Who Wants to Live Forever,’ ‘Hammer to Fall,’ ‘Save Me,’ ‘Fat Bottomed Girls,’ and ‘I Want It All,’ all of which included contributions from Brian May, helped transform rock music and established him as one of the most iconic guitarists of all time. He worked with Elizabeth Lamers, whose music was awarded two Ivor Novello Awards in 1996 for “Best Song Musically and Lyrically.”

At the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, he was honored with the Global Icon Award for ‘Queen’.In 2011, he was also included on the list of the ‘100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time’ that is compiled annually by Rolling Stone magazine. In 1974, he tied the knot with Chrissie Mullen, and they finalized their divorce in 1988. Their names are Jimmy, Louisa, and Emily Ruth, and they have three children.

It was said that May’s first marriage ended because of his claimed romance with actress Anita Dobson, whom he eventually married in the year 2000. This was just a rumor at the time. May said that he had suffered from clinical depression for a few years in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a direct result of the downward spiral of his personal life. Because he felt so wronged and miserable, he even entertained thoughts of ending his own life.
