Brigitte Bardot Bio

Bardot, often referred to by her initials B.B., had aspirations of becoming a ballerina when she was younger. As a result of her efforts, she was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris, a renowned music, dance, and theater academy in Paris. Her professional life began when she was only 15 years old and appeared on the cover of Elle magazine.

There, she grabbed the attention of her future husband, Roger Vadim, who was the one who introduced her to the film industry. Even though they were divorced a few years later, they continued to work together professionally. Bardot appeared in several films he directed, including Don Juan 73 and Les Bijoutiers du Clair de Lune.

Brigitte Bardot, often known as the prototypical sex kitten, was the first foreign-language celebrity in history to achieve a degree of worldwide popularity similar to that of the most popular domestic talents in the United States. She was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist and was born in Paris on September 28, 1934.

While studying dance, she was contacted with the opportunity to begin modeling, and by the year 1950, her picture had already adorned the cover of Elle magazine. Her father was an industrialist. When the director Marc Allegret saw her there, he recognized her as the young Simone Simon he had previously found. Soon after, Roger Vadim, Allegret’s assistant, sought Bardot for a part in the film Les Lauriers Sont Coupes. The same year, Bardot debuted in the film industry in the Jean Boyer comedy “Le Trou Normand.”

After that, she played in several minor parts until being cast in the Jean of Arc production by Warner Bros. in 1955. Her performance shocked the production company by offering her a seven-year contract. Still, she turned down the opportunity to star with Jean Marais and Isabelle Pia in the upcoming film Futures Vedettes.

The film’s producer, Christine Gouze-Renal, later became her mentor and managed her career for several years. Even though she was relatively unknown at the time, Bardot quickly experienced a succession of songs, including Cette Sacree Gamine, Mi Figlio Nerone, and En Effeuillant la Marguerite, which established her as France’s most prominent sex symbol by the year 1957. The producer Raoul J. Levy allowed Vadim to direct his wife in the sensual melodrama Et Dieu Crea la Femme, which also starred Jean-Louis Trintignant.

This opportunity was presented to Vadim as Bardot’s fame began to skyrocket. As rumors circulated about a potential romance between Bardot and Trintignant, her marriage to Vadim unraveled, but their separate careers remained interwoven for years. The film made Bardot a global sensation and earned her over four million dollars in the United States alone.

After Levy struck a reported $225,000 three-picture agreement with Columbia for Bardot’s services, she next featured in the sex romp Une Parisienne, followed by Vadim’s Les Bijoutiers du Clair de Lune. Bardot’s appeal to American viewers was remarkable for an actress who did not understand English. However, the project did not come to fruition, and she next appeared in the 1960 film Babette en va-t-en Guerre opposite Jacques Charrier, who briefly became her second husband.

Bardot attempted suicide on her 26th birthday while filming Henri-Georges Clouzot’s La Verite later that year; after production resumed, the completed film rose to become France’s top moneymaker for the year; however, it marked the end of her deal with Columbia, and because of her waning popularity in the United States and Britain, no other arrangements were immediately forthcoming.

Behind Brigitte Bardot was the first pop music album Bardot published in 1960. She created many more L.P.s, such as Brigitte Bardot Sings in 1963 and Special Bardot in 1968, and she achieved a series of hit songs in collaboration with the iconic singer and composer Serge Gainsbourg. After she fired the original director of the 1961 comedy La Bride Sur le Cou, Vadim stepped in to complete the picture. The film was supposed to be Bardot’s swan song, but she was quickly persuaded out of retirement to star in Jean-Luc Godard’s brilliant Le Mépris.

Although the film is now regarded as a classic, when it was first released, it was met with very mixed reviews, and significant editing was required before it could be shown in countries other than France. As a direct consequence of this, it was a financial failure, and as a direct result, Bardot lost her position as the most famous actress in Europe to Sophia Loren.

Following the completion of her first film in the United States, the 1964 comedy Dear Brigitte, Brigitte Bardot started production on Jacques Mallle’s comedy Viva Maria!, in which she was cast alongside Jeanne Moreau. Even in her territory of France, her reputation continued to wane, and she only featured in another certified success after 1970’s L’Ours et la Poupee.

When it failed to live up to the expectations of worldwide box-office audiences, only some of Bardot’s future films were broadcast outside of France; instead, they were primarily shown in France. This time, apart from a few television appearances, she kept her promise and consistently declined all offers to return to the screen. In her later years, she adopted more of a reclusive lifestyle, yet she got occasional media attention thanks to her strong support of animal rights issues.
