Burna Boy was born on 2 July 1991 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Burna Boy is one of the most well-known artists in Nigeria. He is noted for his unique dancehall, reggae, Afrobeat, and pop blend. His breakthrough came with the LeriQ-produced song “Like to Party” in 2012, which also opened the way for his full-length debut album, L.I.F.E., released the following year. During the next five years, Burna published two additional albums and worked on collaborative projects with a wide range of musicians, including J Hus, Skales, Fall Out Boy, and Lily Allen.
Outside, his album, released in 2018, received the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Album of the Year and reached number three on the Billboard Reggae chart. This led to a significant expansion of his worldwide visibility. Both 2019’s African Giant and 2020’s Twice as Tall received critical praise and charted in several different nations. After making history by being the first Nigerian to headline a performance at Madison Square Garden, he released his smash sixth album, Love, Damini, in 2022. This was followed by the release of I Told Them the following year.
Damini Ogulu was born Burna Boy in Port Harcourt, located in Rivers State, Nigeria, in 1991. When he was barely ten, a fellow student at his school handed him a copy of the music creation program FruityLoops. This was the beginning of his career as a musician. He armed himself with these tools and started producing his beats on an outdated computer. After completing high school, he traveled to London to enroll in a university there; however, he left school after just two years and relocated to Nigeria instead. Ogulu, then 19 years old, came to the southern coast of Nigeria in 2010 to see the studio space that a familiar friend, the producer LeriQ, owned.
After spending most of his childhood engrossed in the music of American performers like D.M.X., this was the beginning of the era during which he started to connect to the tune of his nation. He dived into the dancehall and reggae music his father enjoyed and the Afrobeat music his grandpa favored. Due to his recent findings, Ogulu developed a fusion of musical styles that would later become distinctive to his work. Burna Boy’s song “Like to Party,” which he composed with production by LeriQ and highlighted his ascent to stardom and built a local buzz along the way, resulted from their collaboration.
His first studio album, L.I.F.E., included guest appearances from Wizkid, Timaya, 2face, and M.I. and was released in 2013. The album received positive reviews from critics in the music industry. Burna severed ties with his record label and LeriQ to create his second album, On a Spaceship, which he released in 2015. This record is even more eclectic than Burna’s first effort. In 2017, he collaborated with the record producer Juls on the tune “Rock Your Body.”
Throughout the year, several singles were released, some of which include “GBA,” “Streets of Africa,” “Koni Baje,” and “Sekkle Down,” which features J Hus. Following the launch of the Lily Allen-featured song “Heaven’s Gate” at the beginning of January 2018, Burna released his third studio album, Outside, around the end of the same month.
Burna Boy calls the kind of music he creates “Afro-fusion,” which is a combination of Afrobeat, dancehall riddims, reggae, rap from the United States, and R&B. Burna Boy’s music was described as “savvy and modern but undistracted by obvious crossover moves” by August Brown of The Los Angeles Times. In 2019, Burna Boy was gifted a chain created by D.J. Nu Kidd and based on Fela Kuti’s aesthetic.
A tune titled “Sunshine Riptide” from Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album, MANIA (2018), features Burna Boy, released in January 2018. On January 26, 2018, he released his third album under his name, Outside. Outside, presented as a mixtape, comprises Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, and road map. The English artists J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel contributed vocals to the track as special guests. “Rock Your Body,” “Streets of Africa,” “Koni Baje,” “Sekkle Down,” “Heaven’s Gate,” and “Ye” are the six singles that were released in promotion of the album Outside.
Leriq, Baba Stiltz, Jae 5, Juls, Chopstix, Steel Banglez, Fred Gibson, and FTSE were responsible for its creation. The album has gained praise from music critics and was named the most excellent Nigerian album of 2018 by Pulse Nigeria and Nigerian Entertainment Today. At the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, it was recognized as the year’s best album.
In February of 2018, it made its debut on the Billboard Reggae Albums list at position number three. The most successful track from the album, “Ye,” topped the year-end charts in various Nigerian newspapers as the most popular song in the country in 2018.
Burna Boy had a performance on October 7, 2018, at the O2 Academy Brixton in London, which was attended by a whole house. He organized a pop-up event at Red by Little Farm the day before the concert and sold limited boxes of his Space Puffs cereal and personalized notepads, lighters, and graphic t-shirts.
The event took place the day before the show. After a year had passed, he returned with the track “Killin Dem,” which was a joint effort with Zlatan. It was eventually featured on his fourth album, African Giant, released in July 2019, among more songs such as “Dangote” and “On the Low.” At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the record album was considered for nomination in the Best World Music Album category. Burna released his first full-length album, Twice as Tall, in August 2020.
