Celine Dion Bio

French Canadian pop singer Céline Dion (full name: Céline Marie Claudette Dion; born March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada); is famous for her powerful voice and fiery stage presence; a global phenomenon of the 1990s. Her work is predominantly in the pop ballad genre, and she has released a number of successful albums in both French and English.

At the age of five, Dion began singing with her musically-inclined family in their little hamlet outside of Montreal, where she was raised as the youngest of fourteen children. René Angélil, whom she would later marry, discovered her when she was 12 and gave her her first break with the album La Voix du beau Dieu. After that, in 1982, Dion took home a prize at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, and the following year, she collected the first of many Félix prizes. And in 1983, she made history by becoming the first Canadian to win a gold record in France. Dion’s “Ne partez pas sans me” (1988) was the winning entry for Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest. As the 1980s came to a close, she had already released eight French studio albums. Her image as a sweet naivete faded as she entered maturity, and she adopted a more sophisticated persona.

The sentimental ballad “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” became Dion’s first top 10 songs in the United States after the publication of her debut English-language album, Unison, in 1990. She became even more well-known around the world after her Grammy-winning performance as part of a duet with Peabo Bryson on “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), from the Disney animated picture of the same name, became a hit. Even while some critics panned Dion’s music as schmaltzy and overly polished, her clear vocal skill and emotionally driven lyrics quickly made her an international superstar. Her album Falling into You (1996) won two Grammys, including album of the year, and featured the smash hit “The Power of Love,” from 1993’s The Colour of My Love.

However, the recording of “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme song from the hit film Titanic, brought Dion perhaps her greatest fame (1997). The song was nominated for an Academy Award, became a worldwide smash, and helped push the sales of her album Let’s Talk About Love, which also featured collaborations with Barbra Streisand and Luciano Pavarotti, into the tens of millions. Dion’s best-selling Francophone album, D’eux , was recorded throughout the ’90s.

Dion took a break from her work around the turn of the millennium so that she could devote more time to her family. She came back with the adult contemporary-leaning A New Day Has Come (2002) and dance pop-tinged One Heart (2003). These releases went well in the marketplace, although they weren’t as successful as Dion’s earlier efforts. In 2007, it was announced that Dion’s album sales had topped 200 million, despite the fact that she was no longer the overwhelming cultural force she had been a decade before. The albums Sans attendre, which had a duet with French rock veteran Johnny Hallyday, and Loved Me Back to Life (2013), which featured a duet with Stevie Wonder, both contributed to this rise.

After taking a hiatus from performing in 2014 and 2015 to care for her sick spouse, who passed away in early 2016, Dion has returned to the stage. The French album Encore un Soir, released almost seven months after René Angélil’s death, was recorded during her Las Vegas residency. She later sang “Ashes” for the spoof superhero picture Deadpool 2 and “How Does a Moment Last Forever” for the live-action Beauty and the Beast. With the release of 2019’s Courage, Dion delivered her first album in English in six years. She revealed her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome three years later. Her movement and voice were both hampered by the spasms brought on by her unusual neurological disease. Dion had to cancel or postpone a number of performances on her 2023 tour so that she could get treatment.

Swift’s love of music began at a young age, and she quickly ascended from performing in children’s theatre to performing in front of thousands. She sang the national anthem before a Philadelphia 76ers game when she was 11 years old, and the next year she picked up a guitar and started writing songs. Swift wrote songs about the isolation she felt as a preteen, drawing inspiration from country music singers like Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks. Swift’s family uprooted from their Pennsylvania farm and settled in Hendersonville, Tennessee when she was 13 so that she could be closer to Nashville, where she could submit demos to country record labels.

Swift, then only 14, signed with Sony/ATV as a songwriter in 2004 after a development deal introduced her to RCA Records’ veteran musicians. She performed many of her original compositions in the Nashville region, attracting the attention of record producer Scott Borchetta. Swift’s debut single, “Tim McGraw,” was released in the summer of 2006 after Borchetta signed her to his nascent Big Machine label. The song was inspired by and heavily references a song by Swift’s favourite country performer, Tim McGraw.

The song was an instant hit, topping the Billboard country singles list and staying there for eight months. Swift released her self-titled first album at the age of 16 and went on tour as the opening act for Rascal Flatts. It was in November of that year that Swift got the Horizon Award for the best new artist from the Country Music Association (CMA), capping up a year in which she became the most prominent young star in country music.

Swift’s sophisticated pop sensibility was on full display in her 2008 follow-up, Fearless, as she wooed the pop masses without abandoning her country origins.  When all was said and done, it topped the list longer than any other album of the decade. Popular digital singles were “You Belong with Me” and “Love Story,” the latter of which was downloaded more than four million times for a fee.

Swift’s first headlining tour, which took her across North America, was a huge success. Swift was also a major force in the music business award shows that year. She won the best female video award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in September for her performance of “You Belong with Me,” and the Academy of Country Music named Fearless the album of the year in April. Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs was cut short by rapper Kanye West, who insisted that Beyoncé deserved the award for “one of the best videos of all time.”

Beyoncé received a standing ovation when she welcomed Swift onstage to end her statement when she accepted the award for video of the year later in the show. Swift swept the four awards she was up for at that year’s CMAs in November. She is the youngest person to win CMA Entertainer of the Year, and the first female solo performer to win the honour since 1999. She had a fantastic start to 2010 by winning four awards at the Grammys, including the top honour for album of the year as well as the awards for best country song and best country album.
