The full name of Chelsea Handler is Chelsea. American comedian and author Joy Handler was birth on February 25, 1975, in Livingston, New Jersey, United States. She is well known for her earthy and raunchy comedic style and her late-night talk program, Chelsea Lately (which aired from 2007 to 2014). Handler spent his childhood in New Jersey and was the sixth and last child in his family. She entered the Miss New Jersey pageant when she was a teenager, but she began looking for employment in the performing arts when she was 19 years old when she moved to Los Angeles to start a career as an actress. After some time, she pivoted her career toward stand-up comedy and began appearing in various venues across the city.
This eventually led to a role on Girls Misbehaving, a program with a covert camera that aired on the Oxygen network and debuted in 2002. Fans were drawn to Handler because of her bold and self-deprecating writing style and the irreverent and borderline crude manner in which she discussed sexual matters. In 2005, she released her first book, a collection of humorous short pieces titled My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands. The book was focused on her experience in the dating world.
After appearing on the E! network and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Chelsea Handler was offered her very own talk show on the E! network, titled The Chelsea Handler Show. The program aired 12 episodes between April and September of 2006, alternating between comedic skits and live performances of Chelsea Handler’s stand-up comedy act. The following year saw the debut of E!’s Chelsea Lately program. Stand-up comedy by Handler was one of the program’s highlights and a recurring roundtable discussion that included cameos from other comedians.
It was uncommon among late-night shows in that it actively pursued minor celebrities to appear on the show as guests, in addition to drawing in names from A-list celebrity guest lists. In 2011, E! launched the first season of the comedy After Lately, which was based on the goings-on behind the scenes of the talk show. Also, in 2007, Chelsea Handler started acting with Jenny McCarthy and Leah Remini in the web comedy series “In the Motherhood” (which ran from 2007 to 2008 and was eventually converted into a short-lived television series in 2009 starring various other actors).
Handler has been featured as a guest star on television series, such as The Practice, Reno 911!, and The Bernie Mac Show. She has also made appearances as herself on shows like The Good Wife. She hosted the MTV Video Music Awards event in 2010, following in the footsteps of comedians like Chris Rock, Jack Black, and Dennis Miller, who had done it before. In 2014, Handler announced that the last season of Chelsea Lately would air that same year and that she would begin creating programming for Netflix.
This endeavor ultimately created the hilarious documentary series Chelsea Does (2016), which consists of four episodes. Each episode featured Handler improvising and conducting interviews on a contentious topic related to that week. In the latter part of 2016, she debuted her talk show, Chelsea, hosted on Netflix. The following year, the show was canceled, and her contract with Netflix was terminated soon after that.
At 19, Handler moved to live with her aunt in Los Angeles, and at 21, she decided to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. Her debut on the small screen came as a part of the ensemble cast of the television show “Girls Misbehaving.” The program was shown for a total of three years. After that, Handler found work at “E!”, where he eventually became a pundit on “Scarborough Country.”
Before beginning to host her namesake program, “The Chelsea Handler Show,” in April of 2006, she had previously presented “On the Lot” and served as a reporter for “The Tonight Show.” Since that time, Handler has performed in several shows. After hosting many comic television series and stand-up events, including “Chelsea Lately,” Chelsea Handler was allowed to host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2016, Chelsea Handler shot the first episode of a documentary series on Netflix that would later be titled “Chelsea Does.”
The second book written by Handler, titled “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea (2008) debuted at the top of the list of best-selling nonfiction books in the New York Times. It was followed by Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang (2010) and Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me (2011), a compilation of tales written by her friends and family; both books also achieved number one. It was followed by Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang (2010). In her book “Uganda Be Kidding Me” (2014), also an instant best seller.
Handler detailed the accidents that occurred throughout her travels. In 2012, NBC debuted the comedy Are You There, Chelsea? Adapted from Handler’s book series of the same name. In addition to appearing on the program in a supporting role, Handler acted as an executive producer. Her latter writings include the memoir Life Will Be the Death of Me:…and You Too! (2019), which covers her “year of self-discovery,” and the essay collection Hello, Privilege. A documentary released in 2019 titled “It’s Me, Chelsea” investigates the influence of white privilege on culture.
In addition to working on developing her career on television, Handler maintained an active performance schedule as a stand-up comedian. Several of her live performances were captured on video for future release as stand-up comedy specials. Uganda Be Kidding Me Live (2014) and Chelsea Handler: Evolution (2020) are among them. She has appeared in supporting parts in a few films, including the role of a racy best friend to the character played by Reese Witherspoon in the action comedy This Means War (2012).
