Chris Norman is a British soft rock singer with a worldwide following, and a career that spans many decades. He is best known for his solo singles in the ’80s and his hits with the band Smokie in the ’70s. He parted company with Smokie a few years after the success of his duet with Suzi Quatro, “Stumblin’ In,” which was released in 1978, and gained solo success with his second album, Some Hearts Are Diamonds, which was released in 1986.
In the following decades, Norman showed himself to be unexpectedly productive, releasing a new studio album every two or three years and retaining a solid fan following in Germany, where his chart success extended into the 2000s. During this time, Norman also maintained a significant fan base in the United Kingdom, where he continued to have chart success until 2000.
After experiencing a renaissance in 2004 and scoring a Top Ten success in Germany with “Amazing,” he continues to release new material and career-spanning compilations like 2009’s The Hits! Norman started his career as a musician with the band Smokie. He was born on October 25, 1950, in Redcar, which is located in North Yorkshire, England. The band was first established in 1965, but it underwent multiple name changes before finally settling on Smokie in the middle of the 1970s.
Smokie released their first studio album, titled Pass It Around, in 1975. Their second album, “Changing All the Time,” released in 1975, helped propel them into the mainstream of pop music not just in the United Kingdom but also in other areas of Western Europe. In those regions, the album’s song “If You Think You Know How to Love Me” was a Top Ten smash.
Following this success, Midnight Cafe (1976), Bright Lights and Back Alleys (1977), and The Montreux Album (1978) were all critically acclaimed and commercially successful releases. In addition, in 1978, Norman and Suzi Quatro collaborated on a song called “Stumblin’ In,” which became a top-ten smash single internationally.
When Smokie’s fame began to decline around the turn of the century, Norman decided to leave the band and release his first album as a solo artist the following year, titled Rock Away Your Teardrops. His first full-length album, Some Hearts Are Diamonds (1986), was not very successful, but his second full-length effort was a different story, resulting in the creation of the worldwide Top Ten smash hit song “Midnight Lady.”
His most significant success came in Germany in the late 1980s, when he had a string of other singles there, including “No Arms Can Ever Hold You,” “Sarah (You Take My Breath Away),” and “Broken Heroes.” Norman’s popularity there was unparalleled in the rest of the world. Although Norman published a new album every couple of years, beginning in the middle of the 1980s and continuing into the 2000s, his popularity declined throughout the 1990s, and it was only after the turn of the century that he began to re-enter the charts.
At the beginning of the next decade, Norman continued to be productive in the recording studio. Beginning with the album Time Traveller, released in 2011, Norman once again released a new album every couple of years. There and Back (2013), Crossover (2015), and Don’t Knock the Rock (2017) were some of the albums that were released after that.
On November 30, Chris Norman and the other members of his band are scheduled to arrive in Imphal, the capital of Manipur. Lay Back in the Arms of Someone, Living Next Door to Alice, and If You Think You Know How to Love Me are the band’s three most famous singles. Chris Norman’s band is most known for these songs.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for all of the Smokie fans in Northeast India to hear all of Smokie’s hit songs performed by none other than Chris Ward Norman, who will be singing them all. The residents of Manipur are in for a real treat as Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR), followed the next night by Chris Norman and his band, will be playing there on November 29 and 30, respectively.
The 7 Sisters Foundation’s ticket website will soon begin selling Chris Norman concert tickets to the general public. The tickets for two events will be sold jointly, including MLTR on November 29 and the other featuring Chris Norman and his band on November 30. On December 3, he is also scheduled to perform at the Me Gong festival in Tura.
