Creed Bratton was a member of the band at the time. Bratton resurrected his music career alongside his acting work by releasing his solo album Chasin’ the Ball in 2001. This was followed by the publication of two more albums in rapid succession. In 2008, he published another album while working on The Office, and he continued to pursue acting and music in equal proportion throughout the 2010s. Bratton was born in Sacramento, and he began playing the guitar when he was a young lad. After completing his high school education in 1961, he decided to try his hand at life as a traveling musician. They formed a duo act, busking for a livelihood as they made their way from country to country as they traveled around Europe and the Middle East. He met fellow Californian Warren Entner, who also played guitar while traveling through Europe and the Middle East.
He was also a traveler. After a chance encounter in 1964 with an Israeli businessman, who envisioned the two as the possible nucleus of an Israeli-based rock and roll band consisting of expatriate Americans, their relationship began solidifying and becoming more long-lasting. That went on for a few months when the potential band members went their separate ways until they arrived back in the United States.
In 1965, while Bratton was residing in Los Angeles, he tracked down Entner and informed him that he was still interested in creating a band. He also told Entner that if they successfully put the band together, a friend of Bratton’s could instantly get them a lucrative job. Therefore, Bratton took over as the lead guitarist, Entner continued to play rhythm guitar and sing, and the band was rounded out by Rick Coonce on drums and Rob Grill on bass. They called themselves the 13th Floor and played in the Los Angeles area pubs, clubs, and bowling alleys. They differentiated themselves from other bands by writing and recording their tunes, which they then forwarded to Lou Adler’s newly established Dunhill Records.
Dunhill expressed interest in the 13th Floor in one of those strange turns of destiny, although not necessarily in the manner that the 13th Floor’s owners had anticipated. The record company was interested in signing them. Still, they were given a choice: either sign as the 13th Floor and begin working with producers and songwriters P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri using their name and starting from scratch, or take on the name the Grass Roots.
A previous band had vacated this alias and offered the same chance (under which Sloan and Barri had produced the Top 30 hit “Where Were You When I Needed You?” They changed their name to the Grass Roots when Grill assumed the role of lead vocalist, and starting in the spring of 1967 with the number eight single “Let’s Live for Today,” they had a streak of more than a dozen chart successes that lasted through 1973.
On the Grass Roots’ first two long-playing albums (LPs) and the accompanying singles, Bratton was the lead guitarist, Entner was responsible for the rhythm guitar and some 12-string playing, and Sloan contributed guitar as well. The band also learned how to operate the recording studio from Sloan and Barri and some of their songwriting ins and outs.
Bratton and Entner are credited as co-authors of the infectious tune “Beatin’ Round the Bush.” Together with Grill, the two of them were responsible for writing “No Exit,” which was included in their first studio album, Let’s Live for Today. In addition, the lead guitarist was solely responsible for writing the more brutal rocking “House of Stone,” which served as the album’s closing track.
The playing of Bratton could be heard on the band’s songs (particularly on the ways of their albums) right up to the Lovin’ Things LP, which was issued at the beginning of 1969. At that point, the band had already established a formula for success that prevented the four musicians from displaying excessive individuality. Additionally, the band’s music had shifted from its original folk-rock sound toward a more pop-soul orientation during this time.
In 1969, Bratton departed the band and pursued a career in acting instead of music. Before resuming his career as a musician, he spent the next three decades, during which he was based in Los Angeles, establishing himself as a reliable character actor in various television and film productions. Bratton has continued to create songs throughout his acting career.
In 2001, he went through his back catalog and released his debut solo album, Chasin’ the Ball. It was immediately followed by two additional albums, The ’80s, and Coarsegold, all released on his independent record label, Kindred Music. In 2005, he became a cast member in the American adaptation of the British comedy The Office, which NBC produced.
In the show, he played a character based on himself. Bratton’s reputation as an actor was considerably raised due to the show’s success, which was recognized with several accolades throughout its eight-season run.
