Danai Gurira Bio

Danai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-born American actress and writer. She is best known for her appearances as Michonne in the American horror drama series “The Walking Dead” and as Okoye in the Marvel superhero flicks “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Gurira now resides in the United States. The film ‘Mother of George,’ in which she portrayed the central part of a Nigerian lady, is one of the actress’s other well-known films.

In addition, she has appeared as a guest on many different episodes of other television series, such as “Life on Mars,” “Law & Order,” and “American Experience.” She started her career on the stage and has written many plays that have garnered positive reviews, including “In the Continuum,” “Eclipsed,” “The Convert,” and “Familiar,” the latter of which was commissioned by Yale Repertory Theatre.

She claims that since she was “raised by a scientist and a librarian,” she is “an academic at heart,” which enables her to do the in-depth study that is necessary for writing the plays that she writes. Gurira, who believes that the experiences of African women are portrayed extremely seldom, considers her three plays to be “parts of a trilogy on Zimbabwe’s coming of age from a feminine perspective.” These plays are titled “In the Continuum,” “Eclipsed,” and “The Convert,” respectively.

In Grinnell, Iowa, on February 14, 1978, Danai Jekesai Gurira was brought into the world by her parents, Roger and Josephine Gurira. Her mother worked as a librarian at Grinnell College while her daughter was younger, and her father taught in the chemistry department at Grinnell College when she was younger. In subsequent years, both became members of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville faculty.

The family has four children in total, and Danai is the youngest. She has two sisters who go by the names Shingai and Choni, and she has a brother who goes by the name Tare and works as a chiropractor. Her parents, who had moved to the United States from Southern Rhodesia in 1964, returned to Harare, Zimbabwe, when the nation got independence in December 1983, when she was only five years old. They moved to the United States in 1964.

She began her education in Harare at Dominican Convent High School. Subsequently, she relocated to the United States, where she attended Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to major in psychology. She began her acting training at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts immediately after completing her undergraduate degree, where she eventually obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree.

After finishing her acting class, Danai Gurira started writing plays and pursuing a career as an actor on the stage. She did this because she believed that writing plays would enable her to use her acting abilities more. She established herself as a successful writer in a short time. As a result, she received commissions from notable theater companies such as Yale Repertory Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Horizons, and the Royal Court.

Together with Nikkole Salter, she penned and performed the song ‘In the Continuum’ in 2005. In it, she portrayed the point of view of a Zimbabwean lady who had caught HIV from her husband. She won an “Obie Award,” a “Outer Critics Circle Award,” and a “Helen Hayes Award” for her performance in the play, all of which are given out in the category of Best Lead Actress. The play was initially performed at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and then off-Broadway.

In 2009, she made her debut on Broadway, playing the role of Martha Pentecost in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone performance by August Wilson at the Belasco Theatre. The same year, she released the play “Eclipsed,” which chronicles the tale of five sex slaves taken hostage by commandos in Liberia under the reign of Charles Taylor just before the civil war ended. The play was published in the same year.

In 2011, she played a small role in Shakespeare in the Park’s “Measure for Measure” production at the Delacorte Theater. In 2012, she produced her third play, “The Convert,” at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Gurira’s play, which shows the turmoil inside Jekesai, a girl who flees a forced marriage arrangement, received the “Whiting Award” for an emerging writer. The award is given annually to recognize outstanding new playwrights.

Rebecca Taichman is the director of the play “Familiar,” which was commissioned by Yale Repertory Theatre and written by her. The piece depicts the experiences of a first-generation American and was directed by her. The play debuted at the Yale Repertory Theatre in January 2015 and launched Off-Broadway at Playwright’s Horizons the following month. For her work on the space, she was given the “Sam Norkin Award.”The film “The Visitor” from 2007 marked the beginning of Danai Gurira’s career as an actress in front of the camera. For her performance as Zainab in that film, she was awarded the “Method Fest Independent Film Festival Award” for “Best Supporting Actress.”

In the years that followed, she played cameos in a handful of films, including “Ghost Town,” “3 Backyards,” “My Soul to Take,” and “Restless City.”During this time, she also appeared in guest roles in several television shows, including ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent,’ ‘Life on Mars,’ ‘Law & Order,’ ‘American Experience,’ and ‘Lie to Me.’ She was able to get a recurrent part in the HBO drama series ‘Treme’ in the year 2010.

It was revealed in March 2012 that she would be joining the cast of the horror-drama series ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC in the role of Michonne, a ruthless character who wields a katana, in the third season of the program. Since then, she has consistently been one of the most important characters on the program, even though fans are concerned about the trajectory her character will take in light of her recent success in high-budget films.

In the indie drama film “Mother of George,” directed by Andrew Dosunmu and released in 2013, she was cast as the main character of a Nigerian lady who was having trouble making a living in the United States. As a result of her work in the movie, she was honored with the “Jean-Claude Gahd Dam Award” at the “Guys Choice Awards” in June of that year (2013).

In the 2015 animated fantasy film “Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast” produced by Disney, she lent her voice to the character of Fury. Two years later, she appeared in the biographical drama film ‘All Eyez on Me’ as Afeni Shakur, the mother of the artist Tupac Shakur. In the 2018 Marvel superhero picture titled Black Panther, she played the role of Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje, who is Black Panther’s bodyguard. This role was her major debut in the film industry.

She won accolades for her portrayal in the movie and played the same character in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which was released in April of that year and became the highest-grossing picture of the year. After she started making appearances on ‘The Walking Dead,’ a television series produced by AMC, Danai Gurira became a well-known actress.

Because she came on board the program during its third season, it has become the series with the best ratings in cable television history. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) cinematic adaptation of the comic book character Black Panther has garnered praise from film reviewers as being among the top movies in the MCU canon. It is the third highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and the ninth highest-grossing picture of all time with a global commerce of over $1.3 billion, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2018 the ninth highest-grossing film of all time.

Even though she makes her home in Los Angeles now, Danai Gurira often visits New York City. She is fluent in English, French, basic Xhosa, and Shona. Her other language skills include basic Xhosa. Since she and her co-star on “The Walking Dead,” Norman Reedus, had a casual kiss on the show set, rumors have been flying that they are dating. However, none of them has disclosed any information about their relationship, and she is still counted as single.
