Darrell Waltrip competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1972 through 2000, during which time he is most known for driving the No. 11 Chevrolet for Junior Johnson. Waltrip won the Cup Series in 1981, 1982, and 1985, giving him three titles.
Waltrip was born on February 4, 1947, in the city of Owensboro, which is located in the state of Kentucky. Waltrip began racing in go-karts when he was 12 and entered his first stock car race barely four years later. After building a 1936 Chevrolet coupe together, Waltrip and his father drove it to a small dirt track close to their Owensboro home.
The first night out was a disaster because a young driver who was not yet old enough to drive on the street crashed into a wall, severely damaging the coupe. The driver was barely old enough to go on the road. Waltrip quickly discovered his place on asphalt, where the smoothness he gained in the karts proved a tremendous advantage. He quickly abandoned the dirt and found his specialty on asphalt. Waltrip received his high school diploma from Daviess County High School in Owensboro in 1965.
He drove a car called “Big 100” built by Harry Pedley, the owner of Pedley’s Garage, on West Second Street, in Owensboro. R.C. Bratcher Radiator and Welding Co. was his sponsor at the time. P. B. Crowell, an owner and driver in Nashville, took notice of his performance and encouraged Darrell Waltrip to relocate to the city to compete at the Fairgrounds Speedway, located at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville. There, Waltrip would go on to win two track championships, in 1970 and 1973.
Waltrip drove the No. 48 P. B. Crowell-owned Ford that American Home in Nashville sponsored. American Home was the sponsor of Waltrip’s American Home-sponsored car. Some of the most infamous “on air” trash-talking included making fun of some of the other local drivers such as Coo Coo Marlin, whose son Sterling subsequently raced at the track and is a two-time winner of the Daytona 500, and James “Flookie” Buford, whose nickname he would insult on air.

Waltrip made his debut in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, NASCAR’s premier racing series, at the age of 25 on May 7, 1972, at the 1972 Winston 500 in Talladega, Alabama, the series’ fastest and longest track at 2.66 miles (4.281 kilometers). He did so behind the wheel of a 1969 Mercury Cyclone that he had purchased from Holman-Moody and was originally the Ford Fairlane that Mario Andretti had driven to victory in the 1967 Daytona 500.
After suffering an engine failure on lap 69 of his inaugural Winston Cup race, Waltrip was forced to pull out of the competition and finish 38th overall. Waltrip purchased the vehicle for $12,500, which included a spare engine and many spare components, and he used it for five Cup Series races until the middle of 1973. It started as a Ford Fairlane that Mario Andretti drove, but it was then transformed into a 1969 Mercury Cyclone that Darrell Waltrip rode.
After that, it was modified again to become a 1971 Mercury Cyclone. Based in Owensboro, Kentucky, Terminal Transport was Waltrip’s first significant sponsor and financially supported the vehicle. Because Waltrip’s driving style was so different from that of the last driver with whom Hammond had worked, Cale Yarborough, Hammond was first doubtful of Waltrip’s abilities behind the wheel. Yarborough altered his driving approach throughout a race to account for how the vehicle behaved.
Still, Waltrip insisted that the car be driven in a manner that was more in keeping with his driving technique. Waltrip’s “finesse” and smooth driving style was ultimately something that Hammond learned to enjoy, and it was a very successful style. Waltrip and Hammond would spend most of their careers in the sport cooperating, during which time they would gain from the expertise and talents of one another. Even today, Waltrip and Hammond continue to collaborate as a broadcaster and commentator at Fox Sports and Speed TV.
Waltrip became one of the few car owners to have won races in all three of NASCAR’s major series in 1997 when Rich Bickle finished second in overall season standings and won three races in the Craftsman Truck Series. Waltrip launched a Craftsman Truck Series team in 1995, and it found success in 1997 when Rich Bickle won three races. Waltrip halted the operations of his truck team in 1997 when Sears withdrew its team sponsorship. He did not return to the series until 2004, when he did so as an owner and participant in the Toyota NASCAR development program.
