Derek Martin is an English actor who has since retired from the industry. He was born Derek William Rapp on April 11, 1933. After starting as a stuntman, he transitioned into acting and appeared in various UK television roles. One of the parts that brought him the greatest fame was that of Charlie Slater, who played in the British soap opera EastEnders from the year 2000 to the year 2011, with short cameos in 2013 and 2016.
Martin’s early career entailed working as a debt collector, motor racer, meat market clerk, and professional gambler. He also worked at a meat market. In addition to that, he served his country in the Royal Air Force during his national duty. It was disclosed in February 2010 that Martin was going to have surgery on his knee, and the procedure was scheduled around May of the same year. He blamed his issue on his advanced age, playing football, and his previous employment at Smithfield Meat Market, which required him to move meat.
His big break in the music industry occurred at a young age when, at the age of 17, Duke Ellington engaged him to sing with the band. Martin would go on to have a successful solo career. After some time, the group changed its name to Top Notes and began recording for various record labels. These labels included Tuba, Sue, and Roulette, and they also put out a single 45 for Stax that included the lasting track “Soul Power” and “Sly Girl.”
The Top Notes also recorded the original version of “Twist and Shout” in 1961 for Atlantic Records as the B-side to “Always Late.” The Top Notes’ version created the template, although amplified, for the Isley Brothers’ subsequent popular interpretation of the song, and the Top Notes’ version was published as the B-side to “Always Late.” Martin began his solo career in 1963 with a triumphant rendition of Otis Blackwell’s “Daddy Rolling Stone” on Crackerjack Records.
Martin’s song “You Better Go” came dangerously close to reaching the Top 20 on both the pop and R&B charts, but it was ultimately unsuccessful. Martin has called France his home for several years now, and during that time, he has established a reputation for himself in the French music scene as a soul music maestro, earning him the nick moniker “the Golden Voice.”
Martin began his career in the entertainment industry as a stuntman, working on shows such as Doctor Who. However, after suffering a broken collar bone while shooting the drama Elizabeth R (1971), he transitioned to the role of an actor. Both the British television series Paul Temple on the BBC and the British television series The Governor on ITV featured him in recurring roles. Several films, such as Secrets of a Windmill Girl (1966), The Sex Thief (1973), Eskimo Nell (1975), Sex Express (1975), Adventures of a Plumber’s Mate (1978), Ragtime (1981), Spaghetti House (1982), and Boston Kickout (1995), feature him in starring roles.
In 1978, he played Detective Inspector Fred Pyall in the BBC television series Law & Order with Peter Dean. In the 1981 and 1982 seasons of the BBC program The Chinese Detective, he portrayed the role of Detective Inspector Berwick in both seasons. In 1982, he became the second actor to play the fictitious Detective Inspector Jack Frost, created by R. D. Wingfield.
He did so by acting in a BBC radio production of R. D. Wingfield’s novel A Touch of Frost. In 1984, he appeared in one of the episodes of Minder’s fifth season. In 1985, he was given the lead role in the television show King and Castle, which he shared with Nigel Planer and continued airing for two seasons until 1988. Martin took on the part of ex-police officer Ronald King, who now runs a debt collection business in London’s East End.
The Sweeney creator, Ian Kennedy Martin, devised and co-written the character, who also starred in the show. After that, he played the role of Alex Morris in Eldorado. He has also appeared as a guest on several other television shows, such as Doctor Who, where he played the role of Constable David Mitchell in the episode Image of the Fendahl (1977), The Sweeney episode “Messenger of the Gods” as the antagonist Spooner, Upstairs, Downstairs, The Bill, and Only Fools and Horses. Martin also had a role in an episode of Little Britain in which he portrayed himself.
It was in September of 2000 that he first appeared on EastEnders, playing the role of Charlie Slater. In April 2010, it was revealed that Martin and five other actors had been let go from their positions on the program. Martin was one of the performers let go. He shot a cameo role on EastEnders at the beginning of 2011, and Charlie was scheduled to appear on the show for two episodes around April 2011.
At Christmas 2013, he appeared in two further episodes of the show. It was reported on 11 February 2015 that plans for Martin to return to EastEnders had been called off. On February 11, October, it was confirmed that Martin would create a temporary return for the approaching Christmas and New Year seasons. On 11 February 2015, it was revealed that plans for Martin to return to EastEnders had February 11 off.
His character went into cardiac arrest in the first of two episodes that aired on Thursday, January 7, 2016, and it was the day that he was officially written off the show. In additioJanuary seven, a role in the short film “Piggy Bank” was released in 2004. With his fellow actor John Altman, he made his debut appearance on the third season of Celebrity Coach Trip in January 2012 as one of the first five couples to compete.
