Johnnie B. “Dusty” Baker Jr. is an American baseball manager and former player who now manages the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball (MLB). Baker was born on June 15, 1949, in the United States. He had a career in Major League Baseball spanning 19 seasons, most of which were spent with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
During his stint with the Dodgers, he was selected for the All-Star game twice, earned two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove Award, and was the first player to be named Most Valuable Player of the National League Championship Series. This honor was bestowed upon him during the 1977 National League Championship Series edition. In addition, he played in the World Series three times and was victorious in 1981.
After retiring from playing baseball, Baker took over as manager of the San Francisco Giants in 1993 and remained in that role until 2002. He then managed the Chicago Cubs from 2003 to 2006, the Cincinnati Reds from 2008 to 2013, and the Washington Nationals from 2016 to 2017. Baker’s playing career ended in 1993. Since 2020, he has been in charge of the Astros as their manager.
Baker is the oldest manager to win a title in one of the four major North American sports, having done so with the Houston Astros in 2022 when they won the World Series. As a result of his success with each of the clubs he has managed, he is the only manager in Major League Baseball history to achieve both reaching the playoffs and winning a division championship with five separate teams.

However, once the San Francisco Giants signed Bobby Bonds in 1968, Baker became a fan of the Giants instead. Baker attended Del Campo High School, located close to Sacramento, California. There, he excelled in baseball, basketball, football, and track. In recognition of his accomplishments at Del Campo, Baker was inducted into the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Hall of Fame class in 2010.
As a consequence of this, Santa Clara University made him an offer of a basketball scholarship. His father was so sure that he wanted his son to go to college that he went to different scouting organizations and informed them that he would go to college and play either football or basketball and that they should not waste a draft selection on Baker. Bill Wight was the only scout who saw promise in Baker, and he did so because he was aware of the circumstances surrounding Baker and his family. Baker’s parents had just gone through a divorce, which caused Baker to be concerned about the possibility of being a financial burden for his parents. Despite his wishes that he would not have to play baseball in the South, he was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the amateur draft held in 1967.
On June 19 that year, the Braves tasked Hank Aaron with persuading Baker to sign with the team. Aaron promised both Baker and Baker’s mother, Christine, that he would take care of Baker as if he were his son, and he also guaranteed that Baker would be playing in the major leagues before his college class graduated. The Braves ultimately succeeded in persuading Baker to sign with the team.
Baker’s choice to sign with the club infuriated his father, who sued to nullify the contract and the $15,000 signing bonus. As a result of that lawsuit, the State of California appointed a trustee to manage Baker’s money until he became 21 years old. Baker’s decision to sign with the team led to the trustee’s appointment.
Baker did not talk to his father for three years, and the two did not reconcile for a few years after that. Seeing how his father invested his money changed Baker’s image of his father, and it also inspired him to become a stockbroker for a period later in life.
