Elizabeth McGovern Bio

Elizabeth McGovern has appeared on screen, on television, and on stage. On July 18, 1961, she entered the world. While still a Juilliard student in 1980, McGovern was offered a role in her first film, Ordinary People. She had a role as the girlfriend of troubled teen Timothy Hutton. She completed her acting training at both the American Conservatory Theatre and The Juilliard School the following year, and by the following year, she was making appearances in plays, albeit at lesser-known venues than those on Broadway. After playing Evelyn Nesbit in the 1981 film Ragtime, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In Sergio Leone’s 1984 mafia epic Once Upon a Time in America, she portrayed Robert De Niro’s love interest Deborah Gelly. The director of the picture was Sergio Leone. In Walter Hill’s 1989 picture Johnny Handsome, she portrayed Mickey Rourke’s on-screen lover. In the same year, under the direction of Volker Schlondorff, she participated in the thriller The Handmaid’s Tale as a defiant lesbian.

The year 1989 saw the debut of both movies. One year later, she completed her acting education at the American Conservatory Theatre and The Juilliard School, and the year after that, she began performing in plays, at first in lesser-known theatres than those on Broadway. McGovern spent the majority of her formative years in Los Angeles, despite being born in Evanston, Illinois. Her first film, Ordinary People, was her debut after she graduated from the American Conservatory Theater and the Juilliard School (1980). Her role as Evelyn Nesbit in the musical picture Ragtime (1981) earned her a nomination for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. In the years that followed, she starred in a number of critically acclaimed films from major studios, including Once Upon a Time in America (1984), She’s Having a Baby (1987), The Bedroom Window (1987), The Handmaid’s Tale (1990), and The Wings of the Dove (1990).

McGovern formed the band Sadie and the Hotheads in 2007 after spending years learning the guitar; since 2016, she has recorded four albums with the group. Her role as Cora, Countess of Grantham, in the British period drama Downton Abbey catapulted her to international stardom (2010–2015). A Golden Globe and an Emmy Award nomination were both on the table for her performance in this role. She reprised her role as Cora in both Downton Abbey (2019) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). After her father was hired as a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, the family uprooted and moved west. Before she was born, her father was a professor at Northwestern (U.C.L.A.). She attended the theatre department at The Juilliard School in New York and the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco after finishing at The Oakwood School. While a student at North Hollywood High, she began acting in school productions, which was the beginning of her career.

After making an enjoyable debut in Robert Redford’s Oscar-winning Ordinary People (1980), McGovern produced a fantastic performance as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime (1981), earning her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In between film assignments, she has kept up her theatre career. In February 2013, the band embarked on their first-ever headline tour of England, performing at a variety of venues across the country including London’s Union Chapel. Soon after, while Gretchen Peters was on her own tour of the United Kingdom, she invited them to join her onstage as her special guests for a gig in London. Nashville-based musician and songwriter Gretchen Peters. The band played at the Isle of Wight Festival, then stayed for nine nights at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The band also made their first worldwide appearance as the support act for Sting at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

After a summer full of sold-out shows, Sadie and the Hotheads didn’t slow down for the fall. After performing a handful of gigs in Sweden in September, they returned to the UK in November for a three-week residency at London’s Hippodrome. Not long before the start of this residency, the band announced that they would be working on their third album through the direct-to-fan music platform PledgeMusic. The original release date for the album was slated for February 2014. Backers received updates on the album’s creation, a chance to speak via Skype with McGovern, and even a set of handwritten lyrics, among other rewards. This allowed listeners to hear updates on the album’s production as it was happening. The band performed a few solo gigs in Glasgow and Petersfield at the beginning of 2014. They premiered “Everybody’s Got a Song” as the first single off of Still Waiting, their third studio album, in early February. This album was produced by Kipper Eldridge, who has worked with Sting on previous albums.

After that, in February and March of this year, they supported Mike and the Mechanics on their 25th anniversary “Living Years” tour across the United Kingdom with 23 separate shows. The tour concluded with an appearance at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Sadie and the Hotheads reunited after a short break to play some summer festivals. They performed as World Vision Artist Ambassadors at the Wychwood Festival in early June. That year, World Vision UK was one of the festival’s two major sponsors. The following month, the band returned to Europe to play as a headliner at the Hard Rock Live Festival in Rome, Italy. This show just happened once and won’t be repeated. Having been asked to play at a World War I commemorative event named “Heroes at Highclere,” designed to honor the centenary of the First World War, made their final performance of the summer particularly memorable. This event took place at Highclere Castle, the fictional estate featured in the British historical drama Downton Abbey.

There, McGovern filmed numerous scenes as Cora, Countess of Grantham. McGovern and David Robb, who played Dr. Clarkson on the show, were the only two cast members there that day. David Robb, who played Dr. Clarkson, was the other main character in the show. The rest of the cast of Downton Abbey was in Northumberland, where they were shooting on location. But before they started playing, a message flashed on the giant screen at the side of the stage. Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville and married to McGovern’s character, greeted the viewers and introduced Sadie and the Hotheads in the message. Early in the fall, the band went back into the studio to lay down tracks for a holiday single. They decided to perform an old favorite, “The Little Drummer Boy.” The single and accompanying music video premiered on the first of December and the album White Christmas featured both of these works. Along with the release of “The Little Drummer Boy,” the band was featured that night on the premiere episode of the holiday series “The Christmas Window Live,” broadcast live on the Sky Arts channel in the United Kingdom. This show was broadcast at the moment. The band played for the crowd outside the Westfield Stratford mall in London for fifteen minutes when the curtain was pushed back to expose them from within the festively decorated shop window.

In the days leading up to the publication of “The Little Drummer Boy” and their performance on Sky Arts, Sadie, and the Hotheads announced their first tour of the United States. Early in December, the tour will set out for a swing around the Eastern United States. Barry Walsh, the husband of Gretchen Peters and a musical colleague, stepped in for keyboardist Nick Lacey, who had another commitment during this leg of the tour. CPTV filmed The Hotheads’ final show, which aired on PBS as a “Infinity Hall LIVE” special in the United States. The concert went down in the Infinity Music Hall in Hartford, Connecticut. It premiered on June 19, 2015, if you’re interested. When the band decided to take a break in the fall of 2015, its members worked on a variety of different projects, some of which were musical and others not. Simon and Steve Nelson, who make up the band The Nelson Brothers, have recently played a few live music venues with their full band. One of these locations was The Troubadour, which they had previously played in late 2012 with Sadie and the Hotheads. Filming for the last season of Downton Abbey ended in August, and Elizabeth McGovern was a part of it. As a result, towards the end of October, the band reunited for a brief tour that took them to places including London’s Bush Hall and the Revelation St. Mary’s church in Ashford, Kent. On November 1 at London’s Whitehall Banqueting House, they headlined a charity event with the theme “Star Dust.” Proceeds were given to the One to One Children’s Fund.
