Femi Kuti Bio

Femi Kuti gave birth on 16 June 1962. Saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and activist Femi Kuti is a Nigerian musician known for contributing to the Afrobeat genre. He was born Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti. As the oldest son of Afrobeat artist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, he has broadened the scope of the genre by incorporating punk, electro, and hip-hop elements into it, and after spending many years performing in his father’s band.

Femi and his band Positive Force published their first album in 1989 under No Cause for Alarm. In 1995, he released an album for Motown’s Tabu label with the same name as the artist. Following Fela’s passing in 1997, Femi emerged as the most obvious successor to Afrobeat. Shoki Shoki was recorded by him the following year, and it is now largely regarded as his most excellent album. After reopening his father’s nightclub in 2000 under the name The New Afrika Shrine, he released the album Fight to Win.

Grammy nominations were given to Day by Day (2008), Africa for Africa (2010), and No Place for My Dream (2013), all of which were released in 2008. In 2018, he issued a follow-up album, One People One World, which was successful on worldwide charting. Partisan Records, the label that distributes Fela’s repertoire, gave Made Kuti’s For(e) Ward and Femi Kuti’s manifesto Stop the Hate simultaneously in February 2021 as part of a single package dubbed Legacy Plus.

His parents divorced when he was a little child, and his mother brought him to live with her after the breakup. It was 1977 when he decided to move in with his father at 15. In the same year, he picked up the saxophone and started playing. After attending Baptist Academy and Igbobi College, he became a Fela’s Egypt 80 member.

In 1984, Femi had his first experience as a bandleader when Fela was detained by the military at the Lagos airport just before he was to go on a tour of the United States with Egypt 80. He urged Femi to step in as frontman so that the band’s performances wouldn’t have to be canceled. The older guy passed the torch to the younger man, who then went on to do a string of shows all across the United States that were welcomed with great enthusiasm.

The trip’s highlight was the performance Egypt 80 gave at the Hollywood Bowl with a 40-piece version of the band. In 1986, Femi established the band Positive Force, much to the profound displeasure of his father, which resulted in a rift between the two of them that lasted for several years. Not only did Femi seek a career as a musician, but he also worked for a career in activism.

His band’s style moved away from the jam-oriented and jazz-influenced approach of Afrobeat, with shortened grooves, quicker tempos, edited solos, and the inclusion of synthesizers and drum programming to the mix. In 1988, the French Cultural Centre in Lagos asked Femi to play at the Festival d’Angoulême in France, The New Morning Club in Paris, and the Moers Festival in Germany. All of these events took place in the same year.

In 1989, Femi and Positive Force debuted on Polygram with the release of No Cause for Alarm. Upon their return, the band already had a sizable following of new followers. Its lyrics were packed with pointed social criticisms and political commentary, and it featured a raw fusion of funk and soul-jazz pou, ending with polyrhythmic percussion and clever but bleating horns. The mix was played on radio stations worldwide, including Africa, Europe, and Asia.

During their trip through France, the band recorded their sophomore album there. In July of 1990, they went into Studio Davout in Paris, and ten days later, they came out with M.Y.O.B. In 1991, Kalakuta Records in Lagos and the Melodie label in Europe released the album under their names. After making amends with Fela, who was ill then, Femi signed with Motown’s Tabu label in 1995 and released an album under his name. Unfortunately, Motown ended Femi’s contract shortly after, and the title went out of business.

In 1997, Fela passed away as a result of the consequences of AIDS. His sister Sola passed away shortly afterward after a fierce struggle against cancer. Almost immediately, Femi became the focus of a significant amount of attention. He had just signed a recording contract with M.C.A., who was re-releasing his father’s repertoire at the time, and he was making demos for his label debut with producer Sodi (Sodi Marciszewer).

In 1999, Femi and Positive Force released Shoki Shoki to widespread acclaim, having previously taken some time off to deal with their loss. It was successful domestically, internationally (in Europe and Asia), and in the United States, where it was released. After that, he went on a global tour, which was completely sold out.

In 2000, Femi reopened the nightclub that Fela had previously called The Shrine. Officials from the government had ordered its destruction and closure in 1977. It was given the name The New Afrika Shrine and was co-managed by him and his sister, the singer and dancer Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti. It quickly became a popular destination for traveling musicians and a platform for younger African performers. Additionally, it plays home to the yearly Felabration Festival.

Femi has been a lover of hip-hop for a very long time. He spent a lot of time and effort trying to find a way to connect with the substantial number of people who watched it. The album Fight to Win was published by him in 2001, and it contained collaborations with American rappers Jaguar Wright, Mos Def, and Common. On the list of albums dedicated to world music, it reached number 10 at its highest point.
