William Jonathan Drayton Jr., better known by his stage name Flavor Flav, is a rap artist and hype man from the United States. He was born on March 16, 1959. In addition to being a founding member of the rap duo Public Enemy with Chuck D, he is famous for his cries of “Yeah, boy!” while performing. He has been nominated for six Grammy Awards with Public Enemy, and the group has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
When he was five, he taught himself how to play the piano and started playing immediately. He was a youth choir member at his church and had a solid musical background, having learned the piano, drums, and guitar at a young age. Chuck D claims that Drayton is skilled in performing fifteen different instruments. By the time he reached the 11th grade at Freeport High School, he had been arrested many times for robbery and burglary and dropped out of school.
In 1978, Drayton completed his studies at a culinary arts school. Later on, he enrolled at Adelphi University on Long Island, and it was there that he first met Carlton Ridenhour, better known by his stage name, Chuck D. After working together for the first time on Chuck D’s hip-hop college radio program, they started rapping together soon after. Flavor Flav was initially Drayton’s graffiti tag and later became his stage moniker.
Flavor Flav, better known by his stage name “Flav,” rose to notoriety as a founding member and hype man of the rap group Public Enemy, which he co-founded in 1985 with Chuck D. Flavor Flav is often commonly referred to as “Flav.”One year later, the band released the single “Public Enemy #1,” which brought them to the notice of the executive at Def Jam Records,Rick Rubin. Rubin initially needed to understand Flav’s function in the act and wanted to sign Chuck D as a solo act; however, Chuck D requested that Flav be signed with them, and the two of them were signed to Def Jam. Flavor Flav and helicopter pilot Ray McCort were seen together during a filming for MTV in New York City 1987 saw the release of the band’s first studio album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show. Chuck D’s approach was more severe and politically motivated. Thus, Flav was the comedic counterpoint. Following the success of their previous album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988), which was certified two times platinum, the band began to get considerably more widespread recognition.
The band had already achieved mainstream superstardom by the time the release of their politically charged hit “Fight the Power” in 1989 came around. Flav was distinguished among Public Enemy members because he often thrilled the fans. He appeared on stage and in public wearing enormous hats and spectacles and hung a gigantic clock around his neck. Chuck D was the showman of the group and its promotional voice. Flav stood out among the members of Public Enemy because he often got the people excited.
Following a dispute on the group’s choice to support Bernie Sanders and perform at one of his rallies in Los Angeles, Public Enemy stated on March 1, 2020, announcing that the group would be “moving forward without Flavor Flav.” This came after the group had performed at one of Sanders’ rallies in Los Angeles. Flavor Flav criticized the decision to terminate him and maintained that as long as he remained Chuck D’s business partner in Public Enemy, he was immune from dismissal from the band.

Following an extended break from the active music industry, Flavor Flav accepted an invitation to appear on the VH1 reality program The Surreal Life. While working on this program, he began dating actress Brigitte Nielsen, and they are still together.
After completing “The Surreal Life,” VH1 commissioned Flav and Nielsen to complete the “Strange Love” reality program, which chronicled their romantic journey worldwide. As the world ended, Nielsen decided to return to her fiance, Mattia Dessi. In 2011, Flav collaborated with Nick Cimino to create a location for Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton, Iowa, which is Cimino’s hometown.
