Flo Rida as the sole son of his parents, who had eight children, and he was birth on September 16, 1979, in Carol City, Florida, in the United States. He has been interested in music since his boyhood, and his brother-in-law, who was involved with the local rap group ‘2 Live Crew’ as a hype man, gave him his first taste of genuine music. ‘GroundHoggz’ was an amateur rap group he joined while in the ninth grade and became a member of. The other three individuals in the group were people he knew from his apartment complex. The four people that made up the ensemble collaborated for eight years.
In 1998, he graduated from high school and immediately enrolled in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to study international business management. However, he left the university after two months of classes and has yet to return. He also attended a brief period at the “Barry University” institution. However, since his heart craved music, he left it after a few months to pursue his love for music and move it forward.
Flo Rida is the stage name of American rapper, songwriter, and vocalist Tramar Lacel Dillard.
He is often known simply as Flo Rida. Beginning with his first song, titled “Low,” and continuing through the years, he has produced several successful and chart-busting singles and albums, which have helped him become one of the music artists with the most record sales. After showing an early and persistent interest in music, he eventually became a member of the amateur rap group known as GroundHoggz. His contact with his brother-in-law, a hype guy for the local rap group ‘2 Live Crew,’ increased his exposure to music and helped him develop his musical taste.
In the beginning, he decided to accept a contract with ‘Poe Boy Entertainment’ to establish himself in the music business. His first song, “Low,” which was distributed by “Atlantic Records,” proved to be the catalyst for his true breakthrough, as it topped several national and international charts, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, broke the record for the number of digital downloads sold, and earned multiple platinum certifications. The single was included on his first studio album, titled “Mail on Sunday,” and it was also included in the soundtrack for the movie “Step Up 2: The Streets.” As time went on, he produced several popular songs, including “Wild Ones,” “Right Round,” and “Whistle,” as well as albums, including “Wild Ones” and “R. O.O.T.S.”
Because of his relationship with his brother-in-law, he got a job as the hype man and backup rapper for Fresh Kid Ice, a group 2 Live Crew member. He traveled with Ice in this role, appearing on numerous songs of Ice’s album ‘Freaky Chinese’ (2004), released in 2004. His work with Ice caught the notice of DeVante Swing, a member of Jodeci; yet, even though A&R guided him, he worked hard to link himself with a decent label and was rejected by big record companies. He secured a contract with the American hip-hop group Hot Boyz’ in 2000.
In the days when he was having trouble making ends meet, he worked a variety of odd jobs to pursue his love for music. He sometimes slept in hotels and other times on the street. He returned to Florida after receiving a phone call from an employee of the American record company ‘Poe Boy Entertainment’ (now ‘Poe Boy Music Group’). In 2004, he became a member of the label’s roster. His first significant hit was the song “Birthday,” which featured Rick Ross and was eventually included on his first album titled “Mail on Sunday.” He made his debut as a guest performer on DJ Khaled’s album named “We the Best,” which was released in 2007, on the track “Bitch I’m From Dade County.” Other artists on the way include Rick Ross, Dr. Dre, C-Ride, Trina, Brisco, and Trick Daddy.
On October 9, 2007, he released his first single via “Atlanta Records.” The song was named “Low” and included on his first studio album, “Mail on Sunday.” The American dance film ‘Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) had the song written by Tramar Dillard and T-Pain and featured T-Pain as a featured artist. The song ‘Low’ became an enormous success all over the world. It climbed to the top of several national and international charts, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the U.S. Hot Rap Songs (Billboard), the U.S. Rhythmic (Billboard), the ARIA Charts, and the Canadian Hot 100, amongst others.
His first full-length studio album, “Mail on Sunday,” was published on March 18, 2008, and it spawned three singles, one of which was titled “Low.” The other two singles, “Elevator,” which was released on February 11, 2008, and “In the Ayer,” which was released on May 20, 2008, also made it to various charts and peaked at #16 and #9 respectively on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The album ‘Mail on Sunday’ included several guest musicians on several songs. Some of these performers included Lil Wayne in ‘American Superstar,’ Timbaland in ‘Elevator,’ Will.i.am in ‘In the Ayer,’ and Sean Kingston in ‘Roll,’ amongst others. In the same year, he was also featured on albums such as ‘The Fame’ by Lady Gaga, ‘Gutta’ by Ace Hood, and ‘We Global’ by DJ Khaled. Additionally, he was a guest performer on songs such as ‘Running Back’ by Jessica Mauboy and ‘Move Shake Drop’ by D.J. Laz.
This talented rapper’s second studio album, “R.O.O.T.S. (Route of Overcoming the Struggle),” was published on March 31, 2009, and debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 list in the United States. It became that year’s seventh highest-selling rap album, with 55,000 copies sold during its first week of release alone. In addition to producing the songs “Right Round,” “Shone,” “Sugar,” “Jump,” and “Be on You,” the album “R. O.O.T.S.” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rap Album at the 52nd annual ceremony.
