Ghostface Killah Bio

Ghostface Killah is the stage name of American rapper Dennis David Coles, birth on May 9, 1970. He is a member of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. His stage name is best known as Ghostface Killah. Following the critical and commercial success that followed the release of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the group members moved on to pursue solo careers, with various degrees of achievement in each case. In 1996, Ghostface Killah released his first solo album titled Ironman.

The album was met with favorable reviews from music reviewers. In the years that have followed, he has continued to be successful, producing albums that have garnered widespread critical praise, such as Supreme Clientele (2000) and Fishscale (2006). His stage name was derived from the name of a character in the kung fu movie The Mystery of Chess Boxing, which was released in 1979. He established his record label, Starks Enterprises, and is the company’s CEO. Critical praise has been bestowed upon Ghostface Killah for his raucous, quick-paced flow and his passionate stream-of-consciousness tales that include cryptic language and non-sequiturs.

In 2006, he was given an “honorable mention” on MTV’s list of the “Greatest MCs of All Time.” At the same time, the editors of About.com put him in their list of the “Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007),” referring to him as “one of the most imaginative storytellers of our time.” Both lists were published in the year 2006. It was said of him by Q magazine that he was “rap’s finest storyteller.” According to Pitchfork Media, “Ghostface has unparalleled storytelling instincts; he might be the best, most colorful storyteller rap has ever seen.” He has been described as “a compulsive storyteller” by NPR, which also claims that “his fiction is painterly.”

Ghostface spent his childhood in the Stapleton Houses housing project on Staten Island, in the borough of New York City. While there, he assisted with the day-to-day care of his two younger siblings, who had muscular dystrophy. Although the 2019 series Wu-Tang: An American Saga portrays a dispute between him and fellow Clan member Raekwon, this quarrel never existed in real life and is entirely fictitious in the series. Both Raekwon and Ghostface completed their junior high education at the same time.

Ghostface, a former roommate of Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA, was instrumental in bringing together the other seven group members. Ghostface had many guest appearances on fellow Clan member Raekwon’s first album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, released in 1995. Ghostface participated in practically every song and was given almost equal prominence for his contributions. “It felt good to have my boy next to me, Ghostface, who comes from the same lifestyle as I come from,” said Ghostface.

“I come from the same environment.” Raekwon mentioned Ghostface’s participation in the undertaking in a sentence that began, “And we were able to sit down and concoct an idea that we both were able to respect and get everybody in the crew involved…” Raekwon was referring to the collaborative process between the two of them. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… was supposed to be performed like a film, with Raekwon playing the role of the “star,” Ghostface Killah playing the part of the “guest star,” and producer RZA playing the part of the “director.”

Additionally, he was involved in composing songs for the soundtracks of the films Sunset Park and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Both songs were featured on his first solo album, Ironman, released in 1996. The album, which opened at #2 on the Billboard 200, included a more obvious soul influence (especially soul from the 1970s) than prior Wu-Tang offerings, and following albums by Ghostface would continue to showcase this aesthetic attribute. The album also had a more pronounced funk influence than earlier Wu-Tang releases.

Supreme Clientele was the second studio album that Ghostface released in 2000. After receiving positive reviews from music journalists, the album reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 (#7). It contained the hit track “Apollo Kids,” which featured Raekwon and sampled “Cool Breeze” by Solomon Burke. “Apollo Kids” was included on the album. Another song from the album, “Cherchez La Ghost,” was released and became a moderately successful club smash.

Supreme Clientele was a turning point regarding RZA’s impact on Ghostface’s style. While all but one of the tracks on Ironman, the album before Supreme Clientele, were produced by RZA, just six songs on Supreme Clientele were produced by RZA. Although he made a more minor contribution of beats to the project than he did to Ironman, RZA personally supervised the mixing and production of the album as a whole, which contributed to the cohesive tone of Supreme Clientele.

After releasing Supreme Clientele, Ghostface quickly started recording his second album, Bulletproof Wallets, which included a strong R&B influence and was released a year later. Raekwon and Carl Thomas appeared on the song “Never Be the Same Again,” which was the album’s first hit. It generated another modest club success called “Flowers,” with guest vocals from fellow Wu-Tang members Method Man and Raekwon. It also produced a famous tune called “Ghost Showers,” which featured Madame Majestic, whose other significant claim to fame is that she sings on the classic Wu-Tang track called “Gravel Pit.”
