Giannis Antetokounmpo Bio

Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo is a Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player who currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on December 6, 1994. The term “Greek Freak” was not only given to him because of his height, speed, and strength, but also because of the nation from where he originated. Both as a power forward and as a player, he is largely considered to be among the best players in the history of the game.

After being born in Athens and nurtured there by his Nigerian parents, Antetokounmpo started his basketball career by playing for the youth teams of Filathlitikos, which is located in Athens. Before entering the 2013 NBA draft, he started playing for the club’s senior squad in 2011. The Bucks picked him 15th overall in the draft, making him the sixth overall pick. At the end of the 2016–17 season, he became the first player in the history of the National Basketball Association to complete a regular season in the top 20 in all five main statistical categories: total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. He also led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories.

His performance in 2017 earned him the accolade of Most Improved Player. Antetokounmpo has been picked for seven All-Star games, including being named as an All-Star captain in 2019, 2020, and 2023. In each of these three years, he has topped the Eastern Conference in voting for All-Stars. One of the most decorated players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo earned consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Awards in 2019 and 2020. He joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to win two MVPs before turning 26. Antetokounmpo is one of the most distinguished players in NBA history.

He was just the third player in NBA history, following in the footsteps of Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994), to win both trophies in the same season. In addition to obtaining the Most Valuable Player title, he was also voted the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the year 2020. Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player of the Finals. It was in the same year that he was selected for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, which was a recognition of his status as one of the best players in the history of the game.

Even though Adétòkunbọ̀ and three of his four brothers were born in Greece, they did not inevitably acquire Greek citizenship because Greek nationality law adheres to the principle of jus sanguinis. As he was growing up, he had feelings of alienation from both the Greek and the Nigerian communities in Athens. This was mostly because his parents were of Greek descent and had different skin tones. About the Nigerian community, he was unable to comprehend the Yoruba or Igbo languages.

Because he lacked any documents from either Greece or Nigeria, Adétòkunbọ̀ was unable to go outside of the nation for the first 18 years of his life. He was practically stateless in this situation. In the end, he was granted Greek citizenship on May 9, 2013, which was less than two months before the NBA draft. Following the acquisition of Greek citizenship, his official surname was changed to Αντετoκούνμπο, which is the Greek transliteration of Adetokunbo. This name was then transliterated letter-for-letter and legally written as Antetokounmpo on his Greek passport by the Greek government.

Giannis is a modern Greek form of the name Ioannes, which means “John.” Almost immediately, he became known as the “Greek Freak” because many NBA fans were unable to correctly pronounce his surname. Having gotten his Nigerian passport in 2015, Antetokounmpo is a dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria. He also has Nigerian citizenship. He has declared that he is both Greek and Nigerian and that he is proud of both his Greek identity and his African/Nigerian identity. He also feels equally at home in both countries.

Antetokounmpo had a shooting percentage of 46.4% from the field (62.1% on two-point field goals), 31.3% from three-point range, and 72.0% from the free throw line during the 2012–13 season of the Greek A2 League. Additionally, he played an average of 22.5 minutes per game all season long. Averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game, he played in a total of 26 games over the season. In addition to that, the coaches chose him to be a special participant in the Greek League All-Star Game that took place in 2013.

Even though he was not chosen as an all-star, the coaches decided to let him participate in the game as a special gift for the spectators, given that he was present at the game. On the other hand, he was not officially classified as an all-star pick. This is because only players who play in Greece’s first division are even allowed to be selected to participate in the game, whereas Antetokounmpo was playing in Greece’s second division at the time.

One of the youngest players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo made his debut in the National Basketball Association (NBA) on October 13, 2013, when he was 18 years and 311 days old. His debut season consisted of 77 games, during which he averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks during his career. Both of his attempts resulted in double-doubles, as he scored in the double digits 23 times and grabbed at least ten rebounds twice each. After the season was over, he ended with 61 total blocks, which was the most by any rookie in the NBA and the seventh-highest by a Bucks rookie in the overall history of the team.

In the course of his participation in the Rising Stars Challenge, which took place during NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans, he managed to rack up nine points, two rebounds, and two assists in seventeen minutes. After the 2013–14 NBA season, he was selected for the second team of the NBA All-Rookie team. With the Bucks, Antetokounmpo saw growth on both an individual and a collective level during his second season with the franchise.

In a game against the Houston Rockets on February 6, 2015, he set a new career high with 27 points and 15 rebounds. However, the game ended in a defeat. Over three days, he was honored with the title of Player of the Week for the Eastern Conference for games played between February 2 and February 8. This was the first time in his career that he had received such a distinction. Soon after, he took part in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, which took place during NBA All-Star Weekend in New York City in 2015. In the game against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 9, he scored a then-career-best 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting, which was a career-high at the time.

Antetokounmpo reached an agreement with the Bucks on September 19, 2016, to extend his contract for four years for $100 million. In his fourth season with the Bucks, Antetokounmpo would have his breakthrough season, during which he would significantly raise his statistical production and climb to the status of a superstar. A victory against the Washington Wizards by a score of 123–96 on December 23 saw him record a career-high 39 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

A few of weeks later, Antetokounmpo scored his first game-winning buzzer-beater, a 15-foot turnaround jumper that gave the Bucks a victory against the New York Knicks by a score of 105–104. He also collected 27 points and 13 rebounds during that game. Antetokounmpo scored at least 20 points in each of his 14 straight games, equaling the longest run by a Bucks player since Michael Redd in 2006. He had 25 points against the Knicks on January 6, making it the best streak by a Bucks player since Redd in 2006.
