Goose Gossage Bio

“Goose” Former American ‘Major League Baseball’ (MLB) player Gossage is now retired. He has done so from the right side in his 22 years as a bullpen pitcher in Major League Baseball (1972-1994). Gossage’s best seasons were spent with the ‘New York Yankees’ and the ‘San Diego Padres.’ He’s pitched in the ‘World Series three times and has nine ‘All-Star’ appearances. In contrast to modern closers, who often throw in the ninth inning to seal a victory, he typically only needed three innings to do his job.

Gossage was renowned for his lightning-fast fastball and rough, intimidating manner. He has won the ‘World Series championship seven times, and his efforts in some of his most essential matches have earned him widespread acclaim. Gossage is now a respected member of baseball’s Hall of Fame. After hanging up his boots, he decided to try his hand at sports commentary.

On July 5, 1951, Richard Michael Gossage was born to Jake and Sue Gossage in Colorado Springs, Colorado, U.S. He’s related to Jack. He graduated from Colorado Springs’s Wasson High School. Jeff, Keith, and Todd Gossage are Gossage’s kids from his marriage to Corna. Todd plays baseball at the significant league level. Gossage and his family make their home in Colorado Springs, where he is a strong advocate for local charities and child sports.

In addition to his love of hiking, he has a passion for hunting, fishing, and golf. In Parker, Colorado, Gossage maintained a Burgers N Sports burger joint. Rick “Goose” Gossage Youth Sports Complex was dedicated in his honor by the city of Colorado Springs in 1995. While leaning into the catcher for signals in 1972, Gossage was compared to a goose by his roommate Tom Bradley of the White Sox. This is how he came to be known as “Goose.” He goes by various nicknames in the media, but “Rich” is the most common. Because of this moniker, the baseball field is called “Rick.”

In the 1970 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, Gossage was selected by the Chicago White Sox. In 1975, he had the most saves in the ‘American League’ (AL, formerly National League). He became a free agent after the 1976 season and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Later, the ‘New York Yankees’ picked him in their draft.

Gossage made a career-high 27 and 33 saves in 1978 and 1980, respectively. One of his most outstanding performances came against the Seattle Mariners on September 3, 1978. When he was on the ‘Yankees’ in 1979, his thumb was hurt when he got into a fight with teammate Cliff Johnson in the locker room. He missed a few games because of this. After that, Cy Young winner Ron Guidry replaced him on his own accord.

On October 4, 1980, Gossage pitched the last two innings of a 5-2 victory against the ‘Detroit Tigers’ in the first game of a doubleheader. This was the most saves he had ever recorded in his career. With his 33rd save, he helped the Yankees win their division. The Yankees lost to the Kansas City Royals in that year’s AL Championship Series despite George Brett’s heroics (he blasted a three-run homer off Goose Gossage at Yankee Stadium). The Yankees won three straight American League Championship Series against the Royals from 1976 to 1978.

After avoiding each other for almost three years, the two players finally met during the regular season. Brett had another hit off Gossage on July 24, 1983, at ‘Yankee Stadium.’ A nickname for the game has stuck: “Pine Tar Game.” Gossage saved all three games when the ‘Atlanta Braves’ faced the ‘Milwaukee Brewers in the ‘AL Division Series’ in 1981. In 1983, Gossage’s last season with the Yankees, he set a new franchise record with 142 saves, surpassing Sparky Lyle’s previous mark of 141. The paper was later broken by Dave Righetti, who in 1988 made 150 saves.

Gossage left the Yankees after 500 innings of service, during which he allowed an earned run average of 2.14 and a record number of hits per nine innings (6.59). Due to Steinbrenner’s meddling, he and the Yankees’ owner had a rocky relationship. His nickname from 1982 by Gossage was “the fat man upstairs.” Moreover, he voiced his displeasure with the team’s manager, Billy Martin, for underutilizing his talents. Gossage, a member of the ‘Yankees,’ is credited with creating the setup or closer arrangement used in baseball until today.

Davis and Gossage were hailed as one of the league’s finest at the time (in ‘MLB’). Between them, they have won 77 of 79 contests. After the 1983 season, Gossage remained a free agent despite not resigning from the Yankees. However, he was eventually sent to the ‘San Diego Padres,’ and in 1984, he helped lead them to their first-ever ‘World Series victory.

Pete Rose’s last at-bat in the big leagues was on August 17, 1986, when Gossage struck him out. Before the 1988 season’s conclusion, Gossage and colleague Ray Hayward were traded in for Keith Moreland and Mike Brumley of the ‘Chicago Cubs.’ In 1988, on August 6, Gossage made save No. 300. Thus, he joined the ranks of the other pitchers with the record score.

In April 1989, he joined the ‘San Francisco Giants after being released by the ‘Cubs’ in March. The Yankees re-signed him in August, but only on “waivers.” Joining the ‘Texas Rangers’ in 1991, Gossage got his 308th career save on July 23. After that, he committed to the ‘Oakland Athletics’ every year for the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

In 1994, Gossage joined the ‘Seattle Mariners,’ and on August 4; he became just the third pitcher in ‘MLB’ history to play in 1,000 games. His last Major League Baseball game was a 14-4 victory against the Texas Rangers on August 8, the same year he made his final MLB appearance. Gossage was a ‘Baseball Hall of Fame entrant despite finishing his career with 112 blown saves, a number described as “non-qualitative” by ‘ESPN.com.’

Throughout his career, he has appeared in 1,002 games, completed 681, and racked up 310 saves while working primarily as a reliever (and in three ‘World Series’). Nine ‘All-Star’ tournaments have seen his participation. Gossage was renowned as one of his day’s most accurate fastball pitchers. The slurve and the changeup were among the pitches he threw.

He was notorious for deliberately targeting Ron Gant, Andrés Galarraga, and Al Bumbry with his pitches. He never wasted time on the mound and earned the nickname “no-nonsense, no-frills pitcher.” By then, in his forties, Gossage maintained his role as a compelling and frightening setup man until the early 1990s.

In addition to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2008), he is also a member of the Colorado High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame (2006), the San Diego Hall of Champions (2006), and the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame (2000). In 2000, he published his autobiography, “The Goose is Loose” (‘Ballantine’: New York). The ‘Yankees’ unveiled a plaque in his honor at ‘Monument Park’ on June 22, 2014.
