Hong Chau Bio

Hong Chau is a well-known American actress born on June 25th, 1979. She has been nominated for several awards for her film appearances as Ngoc Lan Tran in Downsizing (2017) and as Liz, a nurse, in The Whale (2022), the latter of which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. After escaping Vietnam in the late 1970s, Chau’s Vietnamese parents settled in a refugee camp in Thailand, where they raised their son. Chau was born there.

The sponsorship of Chau and her family’s migration to the United States was provided by a Vietnamese Catholic church located in New Orleans, Louisiana. She spent her childhood in New Orleans and went to the Boston University College of Communication, where she earned a degree in cinema studies before beginning a career in acting. The television series Treme (2010–2013) and the movie Inherent Vice (2014) included her as an actress.

Following that, she will be seen in recurring capacities on the television shows Watchmen (2019) and Homecoming (2018–2020). In addition, Chau has performed main parts in the movie Driveways and American Woman, both of which will be released in 2019, as well as supporting roles in the film The Menu, which will be released in 2022, and the television series The Night Agent, which will be released in 2023. Vietnam was where Hong Chau’s parents and two brothers called home long before Hong Chau was even conceived.

In 1979, Chau’s family was one of the many Vietnamese families who boarded a boat to flee their nation. At the time, Chau’s mother was about seven months pregnant. Chau’s father was wounded during their flight and came dangerously close to dying from his wounds. On June 25 of that year, Chau was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. Chau is Thai. Her family was sponsored by a local Vietnamese family thanks to the efforts of a Vietnamese Catholic church in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States.

The Vietnamese language was Chau’s native tongue throughout her childhood, and she picked up English later in school. Her family relied on subsidized meal programs and lived in accommodations provided by the government. New Orleans East was Chau’s childhood home, where he received his education at Eleanor McMain Secondary School, Benjamin Franklin High School, and then at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The first two of these schools are located in New Orleans, while the third, from which Chau graduated, is located in Natchitoches.

To provide financial support for their children’s further education, her parents started washing dishes and opened a convenience shop. According to Chau, her parents, who speak English with strong accents of Vietnamese, were rejected because they were Asian migrants. She said, “I’ve always felt like I was the more acceptable of my parents, and they were always the people who had to stay in the background or hide in the broom closet.” This sentiment has followed her throughout her whole life.

Chau attended Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, on grants from the Federal Pell Grant Program, where she majored in creative writing at the beginning of her academic career. When her parents asked her to study something more useful in the real world, she complied and switched her major to cinema studies. She tried acting as a way to overcome her introversion, and after participating in the short films of her other classmates, she was inspired to continue performing.

In 2001, she received her degree from the College of Communication at Boston University, where she majored in cinema studies. Following graduation from college, Chau obtained a position with PBS and planned to pursue a career in documentary filmmaking. Chau first enrolled in public speaking lessons to combat her introversion, eventually leading to improv classes. After Chau had a meeting with a TV director for a comedy, he strongly suggested that she go to Los Angeles and get in touch with him. Chau decided to go to Los Angeles and immediately started looking for acting roles.

In 2006, Chau made his acting debut in both cinema and television. At the beginning of the 2010s, she appeared on episodes of How I Met Your Mother and NCIS broadcast on CBS. Treme, a drama series aired on HBO from 2010 to 2013, featured her in one of her first prominent roles. The series was based in New Orleans. Her first performance in a full-length motion picture was in the film Inherent Vice (2014). She could not acquire audition for another film job for the next two years after she had played her role.

She had a significant part in the Off-Broadway play John in 2015, and she said that the experience helped her improve her acting skills. In 2017, she also appeared in the HBO series Big Little Lies pilot episode, playing a supporting part in the attack. In the 2017 comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne, Chau had a cameo appearance playing the role of Ngoc Lan Tran, a political activist from Vietnam.

Her turn was singled out as exceptional by many critics who reviewed the show. Writing for Rolling Stone, Peter Travers referred to her performance as “nothing less than an acting triumph” and highlighted the “poignant scenes” she had with the film’s lead, Matt Damon. She was considered for several accolades, including Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Chau defended her role, saying she was ” multifaceted and complex and well-written.” Her character was attacked for being stereotypical by certain observers because Chau spoke terrible English. After the events of Downsizing, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences welcomed 928 new members in 2018. Hong Chau was one of those new members. She has performed in guest parts on several television programs, including Forever and BoJack Horseman.
