Issa Rae Bio

Issa Rae is an actress and writer. The online series she produced in 2011, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” is why she became famous. She also wrote a book with the same title, which was an enormous success. Her online project, Insecure, was turned into a television show, on which she worked as an executive producer and co-writer.

The Couple, True Friendship Society, and Instacurity are just a few of the shows she has guest-starred in. To encourage aspiring authors, Issa started a YouTube channel. She’s made it into prestigious lists like Glamour’s “35 Under 35” and “Forbes 30 Under 30” because of her hilarious personality and diva attitude. When the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards celebrated their tenth anniversary, Issa was a deserving recipient of the Vanguard Award.

Issa Rae was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 12, 1985, as Jo-Issa Rae Diop. She and her four siblings spent part of their formative years in the West African city of Dakar. Dr. Abdoulaye Diop, her father, resumed his pediatrics career when the family relocated to Inglewood, California. Delyna Diop’s mother worked as an educator.

Issa’s formative years were primarily spent in the Maryland city of Potomac. Issa’s childhood in Potomac was challenging since most of her neighbors were involved in groups that Black people were not welcome to join. This led her to believe that she didn’t belong there. After that, they moved to View Park-Windsor Hills, an affluent community of African Americans.

After moving back to California, she enrolled in King/Drew Magnet High School for Medical and Scientific Studies. She was interested in music and began rapping as a student there—her talent at rapping opened doors socially. Issa went on to get a degree in American-African studies from Stanford University. At college, she participated in several stage productions, for which she wrote, directed, and acted. Some of her works include music videos. She ultimately decided to attend the New York Film Academy.

She created the online series Dorm Diaries while a student at Stanford. The foundation of this online series was the knowledge she learned as a youngster. Since comedic writing was her favorite, she could tell any story with sarcasm and humor, no matter how serious. She had just started on her career path as a filmmaker and writer.

Jo-Issa, the complete form of Issa Rae’s name, is a lovely blend of her grandmothers’ given names, Joyce and Isseu. She was named Rae after her aunt, who was an artist. In a small ceremony in July of 2021, she wed her longtime companion Louis Diame. The concept for ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ came to Issa in 2011, and the series debuted the following year. Issa served in several capacities on the comedy series, including as a writer, director, producer, and performer.

She was the show’s main character, J, a contact center worker who felt out of place in her work crew. Issa drew inspiration from her upbringing to create the character of J, who is subject to prejudice and hostility at work. The show followed a narrative format, with J relating her story to the audience.

She describes how much she despises her coworker Nina because of the way that Nina constantly demeans her in front of other people. J uses her rhyming abilities to make friends at work, much like Issa did in high school. Issa presented the program on a YouTube channel he made in 2011. Season 2 was also available to watch online. Critics were entirely complimentary of the show’s second season, praising its clever writing and stellar acting. At the 2012 Shorty Awards, it was named the best web show of the year.

Issa effectively used the network to promote her many written and film productions. She also utilizes her YouTube channel to inspire aspiring authors and filmmakers from underrepresented groups. Issa went on to make other online programs with similarly controversial themes, which are often avoided by the commercial media. Rattle Piece Theatre, Roomieloverfriends, and The “F” Word are just a few of the online programs she created.

Issa was twice included in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in 2012 and 2014. Forbes magazine releases this list yearly to recognize the 30 most influential celebrities across all fields. She was also included in “Glamour’s 35 Under 35” issue. Issa’s pilot series, “I Hate LA Dudes,” which she co-wrote with Oscar-winning screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, was rejected by ABC in 2013. Issa’s subsequent online series, The Choir, premiered on the Alright T.V. YouTube channel around the same time.

Issa co-executive produced and co-produced eleven episodes of the romance T.V. series The First between 2014 and 2015. In 2015, she graced the cover of “Essence,” a magazine catering only to African-Americans. In addition to Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Debbie Allen, and Mara Brock Akil, she invited other notable women in the industry to join the page. The book adaptation of her debut online series was published the same year.

She mentioned wanting to work with Larry Willmore, a well-known screenwriter and stand-up comedian, at one of their encounters. In 2013, the pair created the show Insecure on HBO. The storyline of ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ served as an inspiration for the show. Issa reprised her role as the heroine who faces prejudice and discrimination on the job due to her race.

The program’s first episode aired on October 9, 2016, and the second season’s first episode aired in July 2017. Issa was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2017 for her role as Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series. Released in 2018, ‘The Hate U Give’ is a drama film starring Issa. April Ofrah, portrayed by her, is a therapist and social activist who helps Amandla Stenberg’s Starr.

She played ‘April Williams in the 2019 Tina Gordon-directed American fantasy comedy film ‘Little.’ Though it was met with mixed reviews at the box office, the film made over $49 million. Stella Meghie wrote and directed the romantic drama film The Photograph, in which she starred the following year. Most reviewers like the picture, giving it a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. She had another cinematic appearance in the romantic comedy The Lovebirds the same year. The film received lukewarm reviews after its Netflix debut.

In 2022, she was the leading lady in B. J. Novak’s dark comedy picture ‘Vengeance.’ The film opened to favorable reviews and has an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The following year, she released the American comedic web series ‘Rap Sh!t.’ The production of season two of the show is now underway.
