Jeff Goldblum Bio

Jeff Goldblum is a famous American actor who has appeared in film, TV, and the stage. He started acting at New York’s ‘Sanford Meisner,’ where he studied the craft. His first cinematic role was as the rapist “Freak #1” in the film “Death Wish.” At the same time, he started making appearances in television shows and movies. The character of “Protector” in an episode of “Columbo” marked his television debut. He had previously appeared in various supporting roles, but his performance in “The Big Chill” earned him widespread acclaim.

After that, good parts in films like “Into the Night” and “Silverado” started coming his way. From then, he went on to direct box office smashes, including ‘The Fly,’ ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Nine Months,’ ‘Independence Day,’ ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park,’ and ‘Morning Glory.’ He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his role as Scott Wooley in three episodes of the show “Will & Grace,” in which he had a supporting role.

Born to Jewish parents Harold L. Goldblum and Shirley on October 22, 1952, Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum was one of four children. His father practiced medicine, while his mother worked in radio and started a business selling kitchen equipment. When he was younger, he often attended services at an orthodox synagogue. Taylor Allderdice High School of Pittsburgh is where he completed his secondary education. His early interest in theatre led him to study at ‘Carnegie Mellon University’ during the summer sessions.

He left for New York when he was 17 to pursue acting. He began training as an actor at Sanford Meisner’s legendary Neighbourhood Playhouse. He’s very accomplished at the piano. If not an actor, he says he would have become a musician. On July 4, 1980, he wed actress Patricia Gaul; the couple split up in 1986. In 1985’s “Silverado,” they played leading roles.

His co-star from “Transylvania 6-5000” (1985) and “The Fly” (1986), actress Geena Davis, became his wife on November 1, 1987. The pair tied the knot and appeared in the movie “Earth Girls Are Easy” in 1988. The couple split up on October 17, 1990. He was engaged to Laura Dern from 1995 till 1997. Their wedding day was November 8, 2014. They had their first child, Charlie Ocean, on July 4, 2015. On April 7, 2017, they welcomed their second child.

His Broadway debut was in the production of “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” In 1974’s “Death Wish,” he made his acting debut as “Freak # 1,” a rapist. Later, he appeared in films like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978), “Annie Hall” (1977), and “California Split” (1974) in supporting parts. Simultaneously, he also appeared on television. In the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared on TV shows, including “Starsky & Hutch,” “Columbo,” and “The Blue Knight.”

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1980) was his debut film on television. He also played in the same year’s “Tenspeed and Brown Shoe” as “Lionel Whitney.” In the 1980s, he began to find success in the film industry. In 1983, he played Michael Gold in the critically acclaimed film The Big Chill. The following year, in 1984, he starred as Buckaroo Banzai in the now-iconic picture, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension.

Two of his first significant cinema appearances, in 1985’s ‘Silverado’ and ‘Into the Night,’ were instant hits. In the 1986 picture The Fly, he played the lead role of Seth Brundle. The Saturn Award for Best Actor went to him for his work in the film. In addition to the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the National Society of Film Critics Award, both of which he was nominated for, he won neither. He starred in critically acclaimed films, including 1988’s Vibes and 1989’s The Tall Guy.

He appeared in many major box office hits of the ’90s. In 1993, he portrayed ‘Dr. Ian Malcolm’ in Steven Spielberg’s science fiction picture, ‘Jurassic Park.’ In 1997’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” he returned to his role as “Malcolm.” Meanwhile, he portrayed ‘David Levinson’ in the 1996 Independence Day picture. In the 1980s, he co-founded the acting school Playhouse West in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, where he stayed on staff until retirement. In the “Best Live Action Short Film” category, the picture was up for an “Academy Award.”

A Primetime Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series” was given to him in 2005 for his performance on “Will & Grace.” He played ‘Senior Detective Zach Nichols on ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ for two seasons, from 2009 to 2010. New York-based theatrical group The Fire Dept, of which he is a co-founder, was named after him. Pittsburg, a film he created and starred in as himself, premiered in 2006. His other works from the 2000s include “Le Weekend” (2013), “The Switch” (2010), “Adam Resurrected” (2009), and “Perfume” (2001).

In the 2010 comedy picture Morning Glory, he had a significant part as ‘Jerry Barnes,’ with Diane Keaton and the renowned Harrison Ford. He returned to the character of David Levinson in the 2016 sequel to Roland Emmerich’s epic science fiction catastrophe thriller Independence Day. He’s a talented jazz pianist who’s taken the stage by himself. He has also shared the stage with Peter Weller as a member of the jazz group ‘The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.’

He also has a strong reputation in the theatre world. El Grande de Coca-Cola, one of his first theatrical works, and The Moony Shapiro Songbook, The Pillowman, and Seminar are just a few of his Broadway hits. He has been in Broadway’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” and Pittsburgh’s “Civic Light Opera”‘s “The Music Man.”

Several video games use his voiceover work. Since 1996, he has voiced the following characters: Count Dracula in Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland, David Levinson in Independence Day, Dr. Ian Malcolm in Chaos Island: The Lost World, Nero in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World: Evolution. Many American advertisements, notably those for the iBook and iMac, include his voiceover work. He’s also done voice work for commercials for companies like Toyota and Procter & Gamble. Presently, he is a representative for apartments.com.
