Joan Cusack spent his first day of life in New York City on October 11, 1962, but Evanston, Illinois, is where he spent his childhood. Her mother, Ann Paula ‘Nancy’ Cusack (née Carolan; 1929–2022), was a former educator and political leader in mathematics. Her father, Dick Cusack (1925–2003), was an actor and filmmaker, and two of her four siblings, Ann (born 1961) and John (born 1966), are also in the acting industry. Her father passed away in 2003. Her family has a long history of practicing the Irish Catholic faith.

Cusack attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison and graduated there (1984). Working Girl (1988) and In & Out both garnered Cusack nominations for the Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress, which she ultimately did not win (1997).
