Jodie Whittaker Bio

The English actress Jodie Whittaker is best known for her roles as Beth Latimer on Broadchurch (2017-2022) and the Thirteenth Doctor on Doctor Who (2017-2022). The actress Jodie Whittaker was born on June 17, 1982, in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire. She is Yvonne (née Auckland) and Adrian Whittaker’s only daughter and second child. After attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Whittaker made her acting debut in The Storm at The Globe. She has been in films like Attack the Block and had a starring part in the critically acclaimed Venus.

Whittaker married Christian Contreras, a writer, and actor from Belize, in 2008 after meeting him in theatre school. They relocated to London in 2022 and had their second kid the same year. Before portraying the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, Whittaker became well-known for her role as Beth Latimer on Broadchurch. In the 2008 series Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Whittaker briefly sang “The Snows That Melt the Soonest,” In the film One Day, she sang “Angels” as a karaoke song. She also covered the song “Yellow” for the album Got It Covered to benefit Children in Need.

After playing Ffion in the Black Mirror episode “The Whole History of You” in the early 2010s, Whittaker appeared in the anthology series Accused (2010) and the film version of Sarah Waters’ book The Night Watch. Her film credits include Attack the Block (2001), the cult favorite science fiction comedy horror film, as well as The Kid (2010), One Day (2011), Hey Carter (2013), and Good Vibrations (2015). She also reprised her role as Antigone in a modern adaptation of the Greek tragedy opposite Christopher Eccleston’s Creon.

Her 2014 performances as Sandra Grimes in the actual spy drama miniseries The Assets and Anna in the BAFTA-nominated short film Emotional Fusebox led to nominations for Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards or the National Film Awards for the feature-length adaptation, Adult Life Skills, for which she also received a Golden Globe nomination. She also starred as a doctor in the four-part BBC One drama Trust Me and as a detective on the blockbuster ITV series Broadchurch.

On July 16, 2017, it was revealed that Jodie Whittaker would fill the character of the Thirteenth Doctor on the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. In Broadchurch, she had worked with Chris Chibnall, the new showrunner for Doctor Who. She said she had to “say a lot of falsehoods” about getting cast in the part of George Clooney and that she had to use the codename “Clooney” to conceal the truth. As Whittaker knew her father, Adrian, “would have the potential to tell the world,” she did not notify her mother about the job.

“Doctor Who embodies everything thrilling about change. The fans have been through so many changes, and this is merely a fresh, different one, not a terrifying one,” Whittaker remarked to fans, “so please do not be terrified of me just because I am a woman.” While Whittaker’s casting was met with widespread approval, some detractors did emerge. One camp argued that having a female Doctor would be inspiring for young women, while the other camp saw it as pandering to political correctness. Whittaker appeared in the “Twice Upon a Time” Christmas episode of 2017.

The BBC announced in November 2018 that production has begun on Whittaker’s second season as Doctor Who. After the thirteenth season and three spin-off specials, Whittaker will leave the show in 2022. She also provided her voice for the Doctor in the BBC Sounds podcast Doctor Who: Redacted, released in 2022. According to a press statement from February 2023, Whittaker and the company were in Sydney, Australia, to shoot six episodes of a TV series called One Night for Paramount+.

Jodie Whittaker may have handed over the keys to the TARDIS in the autumn, but she has kept up since leaving Doctor Who. She will next be seen in One Night, a dramatized mystery on Paramount+ about three women whose relationship was almost shattered by a shared secret twenty years ago.

Emily Ballou, the author of the critically acclaimed The Slap, has created a contemporary tale starring Nicole da Silva as Simone, who has always wanted to be a writer but has never come up with the proper plot. Now that she is 40, she has written the one narrative that will not leave her mind, and her first novel will be a smashing hit.

The tragedy that inspired Simone’s novel—featuring her childhood best friends Tess (Whittaker) and Hat—is tragic, but there is a catch: her narrative is not fully apparent to her (Yael Stone). They can not believe their best friend from high school is making money off of something that has tormented them for decades.

The book threatens to disrupt their friendships, re-traumatize the little seaside hamlet where they grew up, and endanger them by stirring up the perpetrators, who simply want to make it disappear. The plot of One Night sounds terrifying, and it is more in keeping with the hard-hitting dramas like Broadchurch that made Whittaker renowned before she became the first female Doctor in Doctor Who.

Although Paramount+’s debut in the United Kingdom may have come late to the game in terms of developing foreign content, the company is making up for lost time with the premiere of its first original series, One Night. A plethora of new shows, including the star-studded heist drama The Gold and the romantic comedy Flatshare as well as adaptations of thrillers like The Killing Kind, The Burning Girls, and The Doll Factory, are now in the works.

Sophia Mogford, Executive Producer, Drama and Comedy, Paramount ANZ, said in a statement, “One Night is a brilliant drama and such a contemporary, but timeless narrative set against the dramatic background of the New South Wales coastline, and brought to life by a superb cast of International and local performers. This is a riveting subject, and the chance to work with Easy Tiger, Fifth Season, and Screen Australia makes this a unique opportunity. One Night is another Paramount+ Original to look forward to, joining the likes of The Last King of the Cross, North Shore, and The Appleton Ladies Potato Race.

In addition to Jillian Nguyen and Damien Strouthos (both from The Twelve), the ensemble cast also features George Mason (The Power of the Dog), Erroll Shand (Sweet Tooth), Noni Hazlehurst (A Place to Call Home), Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), and many more (Barons). From Sydney, the state capital, to Illawarra, a coastal area, filming has spread throughout New South Wales, Australia.
