John C. Reilly Bio

John Christopher Reilly is an actor, comedian, performer, screenwriter, and producer from the United States. His first cinematic role was in the 1989 military picture Casualties of Military, directed by Brian De Palma. His mother’s family was from Lithuania, while his father’s family was from Ireland and Scotland. His father had a business that supplied linens to factories. Reilly had said he was a naughty boy, citing an incident in which he and his buddies stole 500 cartons of Sugar Corn Pops off a freight train when he was 12. Reilly spent his formative years in the Chicago Lawn community.

Reilly attended Brother Rice High School and was nurtured in the Roman Catholic faith. He graduated from Chicago’s DePaul University. Both of their boys were born in the late ’90s; the older one in late 1998 and the younger one in September 2001. Reilly is a regular TM practitioner.

In 1989, Reilly made his cinematic debut in Casualties of War, a war film directed by Brian De Palma. Although Reilly’s part was originally intended to be minor, De Palma was so impressed by his performance that it was significantly increased. In June 1990, he starred as Buck, the NASCAR car chief for Tom Cruise’s character in Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder. In the Sean Penn crime picture State of Grace that emerged in September, Reilly portrayed an Irish hoodlum called Stevie McGuire; Reilly had previously featured as a monk in the comedy We’re No Angels (1989).

Reilly appeared as a friend of Jimmy Hoffa (Jack Nicholson), who testified against him in the 1992 film Hoffa. Reilly portrayed a buddy of the title character (Johnny Depp) in the 1993 film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. In The River Wild (1994), Reilly co-starred with Kevin Bacon as two thugs who terrorize a family while on a rafting vacation. Dolores Claiborne, a psychological thriller, and Georgia, a drama, premiered in 1995, with Reilly playing a police constable and a heroin addict, respectively.

In Hard Eight (1996), Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film as a director, Reilly, co-starred as a man who, after losing his mother and needing $6,000 to bury her, is taken under the wing of seasoned gambler Sydney (Philip Baker Hall). Reilly has worked with Anderson on many occasions, including as the pornographic performer Reed Rothchild in Boogie Nights (1997), as the pious police officer Jim Kurring who falls in love with a heroin addict in Magnolia (1999), and as a cameo in the music video for Fiona Apple’s track “Across the Universe” (2001).

Reilly was initially slated in a more significant part in Terrence Malick’s ensemble war picture, The Thin Red Line (1998), but his and many other cast members’ portions were cut from the final cut. Reilly’s performance in the 1999 indie film The Settlement, in which he co-starred with William Fichtner, was praised by critic Robert Koehler of Variety, although the film was deemed a “write-off” by the publication. The same year, Reilly was cast as Drew Barrymore’s newspaper managing editor in the romantic comedy Never Been Kissed. The same year, Reilly portrayed fictitious baseball catcher Gus Sinski in Sam Raimi’s For Love of the Game.

Reilly’s lone 2000 film was the box office smash The Perfect Storm, in which he played a seasoned crew member aboard the fishing vessel Andrea Gail during its ordeal in the 1991 Perfect Storm. He portrayed director Mac Forsyth in the 2001 comedy The Anniversary Party, directed by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming. In Miguel Arteta’s 2002 comedy-drama The Good Girl, Reilly plays the stoner husband of Jennifer Aniston’s character, who finds out about her infidelity with Jake Gyllenhaal’s character.

In the second half of the year, Reilly was in three films that were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture: Chicago, Gangs of New York, and The Hours. Chicago earned him nominations for both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Amos Hart, the devoted husband of Roxanne (Renée Zellweger). Movie star Renee Zellweger told Reilly, “John is often the best thing about the movies he’s in.”

At the same time, film reviewer Roger Ebert commended Reilly for bringing “pathetic sincere naivete” to the part. Reilly played “Happy Jack” Mulraney, a corrupt 19th-century police officer, in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, and he played Julianne Moore’s husband in Stephen Daldry’s thriller The Hours. Reilly played a small role as a monk in the 2003 comedy Anger Management.

Reilly and director Miguel Arteta teamed up again in early 2011 for the comedy Cedar Rapids, which also starred Ed Helms. Reilly was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and praised by New York Daily News writer Elizabeth Weizxman. We Need to Talk About Kevin is a British-American drama adapted from a book by Lionel Shriver, in which Reilly co-starred opposite Ezra Miller and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton.

In the film, he played Franklin, Kevin’s disturbed father and Slate writer Dana Stevens praised his “heartbreakingly sweet” portrayal. Next, he appeared opposite Jacob Wysocki in the comedy-drama Terri, where he played a school administrator who befriends an outcast teenager. Roman Polanski’s 2011 output was the primarily apartment-based dark comedy-drama Carnage.

Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz acted as a married couple whose tension begins when their children start fighting; Oscar winner Jodie Foster played his wife in the film. Reilly was asked to perform in a production of the play from which it was adapted, God of Carnage, but he declined, saying, “I think I’ve spent enough time in that apartment.”

In the December 2016 computer-animated musical comedy Sing, Reilly provided the voice of a sheep as part of an ensemble cast. In the 2017 monster movie Kong: Skull Island, Reilly played the role of Hank Marlow, a lieutenant from World War II who had been stuck on the island for the last 28 years. Out of what is widely thought to be a lackluster ensemble cast, the actor who characterized his part as “essentially a love letter to Chicago” was singled out for praise for his performance.

Film critics Matt Zoller Seitz and Owen Gleiberman both lauded Reilly’s portrayal as the “wisecracking castaway,” calling it “terrifically dry and sly” in a role that might have been cliche. In the 2018 biopic Stan and Ollie about the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, Reilly co-starred alongside Steve Coogan as Oliver Hardy and Coogan as Stan Laurel. In 2018, he portrayed Dr. Watson in the comedy Holmes & Watson, in which Will Ferrell portrayed Sherlock Holmes.

In 2011, he optioned the film rights to The Sisters Brothers, a Western book by Patrick deWitt, with the idea of playing the role of Eli Sisters. In April 2016, Reilly began negotiating with Joaquin Phoenix to play his brother Charlie in the film. Director Jacques Audiard and producer Reilly were both on board. The shooting season for 2017 was in the summer.
