John Diehl Bio

On May 1, 1950, John Henry Diehl was born in the United States of America. He is a character actor. More than 140 films and television episodes have included Diehl’s performances. Some of the films and shows he has been in include Land of Plenty, Stripes, City Limits, Nixon, Jurassic Park III, and the television series Miami Vice, The Shield, and Point Pleasant. Diehl is known for his work in avant-garde theater.

Diehl has thereby “largely avoided the typecasting that is an accepted part of most character actors’ careers.” The year 2004 marked the beginning of his membership at The Actors Studio. When Diehl traveled to New York in 1970, his sister, who had just graduated from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, was the one who persuaded him to go there.

He squatted in Amsterdam for the whole year of 1971, and he traveled back to New York in 1972. He relocated to Los Angeles in the year 1976. The pursuit of a career in the visual arts was something that he had always been interested in, and he had always been interested in sketching and producing things. During his early years in Los Angeles, he supported himself by transporting furniture and objects of art.

After moving to Los Angeles, Diehl decided to pursue a career in acting, even though he had no prior experience in the acting industry. In 1979, he was cast in Action, a one-act play written by Sam Shepard. Before that, he had been attending a scene studies program in Hollywood that lasted for three hours and was held twice a week.

The Padua Hills Playwrights Festival was an annual event that brought together young playwrights from all over the United States. It was an opportunity for them to live and work with renowned playwrights such as Murray Mednick, Shepard, Maria Irene Fornes, John O’Keefe, John Steppling, and Robert Glaudini. In 1980, he became an acting member of the festival.

Over his many years as an acting member of the festival, Diehl collaborated with every one of the writers who were in residence. It was in the 1981 picture Stripes that Diehl made her debut in a prominent cinematic role. During the 25th anniversary DVD release of Stripes, John Laroquette made a comparison between the improvisational skills of John Candy and Diehl and those of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

Harold Ramis was the director of the 1983 film National Lampoon’s Vacation, in which Diehl had a role. Diehl accepted the role of Detective Larry Zito in the television series Miami Vice in the year 1984. Diehl decided to quit the post because he did not find it satisfying. In the 57th episode of Miami Vice, which aired on January 9, 1987, Diehl made his last appearance in a two-part episode titled “Down for the Count.” In this episode, his character was eliminated from the show.

Even though his salary had dropped significantly, Diehl elected not to accept jobs in television shows. Instead, he decided to continue working in cinema while simultaneously pursuing a major stage career. Diehl moved into a basement flat in Greenwich Village in New York. Following that, he had an appearance in the 1987 film The Hanoi Hilton.

Along with Alex Cox’s Walker (1987), which was filmed in Nicaragua during the Contra War, there is a film that tells the story of the experiences of American prisoners of war who were held in Hanoi throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Following his casting in Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind at the Mark Taper Forum in late 1988, Diehl decided to migrate to Los Angeles.

He continued to work in theater in New York, however, and he regularly returned to the stage there. He did so most notably for a Shepard piece that was performed at the Public Theater when Shepard was in residence at the Signature, as well as for Mednick’s Joe and Betty, which was performed twice on Theater Row in New York.

Diehl once again collaborated with Padua Playwrights in 2005, performing in two pieces that were part of Mednick’s Gary Trilogy. In 1997, he performed the same character that he had previously played in Action at the Public Theater. His theatrical credits include, among other things, the play Life of Mine, which he directed at the Mark Taper Forum with Holly Hunter, Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, and Happy Days, which was one of three plays that Diehl directed.

Throughout his career, he has made appearances in over 140 films, some of which include Joysticks (1983), Angel (1984), City Limits (1984), Madhouse (1990), The Dark Side of the Moon (1990), Kickboxer 2 (1991), Mikey (1992), Mo’ Money (1992), Gettysburg (1993), The Client (1994), Stargate (1994), The New Age (1994), Mind Ripper (1995), A Time to Kill (1996), Pearl Harbor (2001), and Road to Nowhere (2010).

As well as recurrent parts on The Shield, Friday Night Lights, The West Wing, and The John Larroquette Show, he portrayed the character of G. Gordon Liddy in Oliver Stone’s film Nixon (1995), the mercenary Cooper in Jurassic Park III (2001), and other roles in films and television shows. In the year 2000, he had an appearance in the television show Fail Safe, which debuted on live television.

He played the role of Harley Earl, a character from General Motors, in a series of television ads for Buick that aired between the years 2002 and 2004. Tony Scott was the director of the ads. He has directed several films in the past, including Crimson Tide and Top Gun. In 2004, Wim Wenders cast Diehl in the role of the male protagonist in the film Land of Plenty, which was about life in the United States after the events of September 11, 2001.

Diehl’s role, Paul, a damaged Vietnam veteran, and Michelle Williams’s character, who represented his niece, were the focal points of the film, which was shot on digital video equipment in sixteen days. During his review of the movie for the New York Times, A.O. Scott said that Diehl delivered a “wry, cunning performance, allowing glimmers of Paul’s intelligence and decency to shine through even in his moments of high self-delusion.”
