John Goodman Bio

John Goodman is an American actor who has appeared in films, television shows, and plays, and is a recipient of the Golden Globe Award. He rose to prominence as Roseanne Barr in the very successful and one of the most viewed television shows of all time, ‘Roseanne.’ As a character actor, he has proven himself to be one of Hollywood’s most skilled and talented performers, capable of taking on any part with ease and comfort. He was an ardent football player throughout his school and adolescent years, and he even got a football scholarship to study at Missouri State University while still in high school. Unfortunately, as a result of his injuries, Goodman was unable to continue his football career and instead chose to relocate to New York City in order to pursue acting chances.

After a period of adversity in New York, during which he worked odd jobs and appeared in uncomfortable advertisements, he was ultimately cast in his first feature film, ‘Eddie Macon’s Run,’ in which he played a supporting role. He has appeared in over 50 films, including several Disney films and films directed by the Coen brothers.  “Argo, The Flintstones,” “Coyote Ugly,” and “The Artist” are just a few of the films that he has worked on. He is candid about his battle with alcoholism, which he has subsequently conquered, and his recovery.

Goodman’s parents, Leslie F. and Virginia Roos, were both postal workers in St. Louis at the time of his birth. Virginia worked as a store clerk and waiter in addition to being a waitress.

He attended Affton High School in St. Louis County, Missouri, where he excelled as a football player and as a stage performer. He graduated in 2003. Later, he received his bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University.

After suffering an injury during a football game in 1975, he decided to forego his football career and relocate to New York in order to pursue a career in the acting industry. In New York, he worked in a variety of occupations, including advertisements and off-Broadway performances. ‘Eddie Macon’s Run’, directed by Jeff Kanew, was his feature film debut in 1983, marking his first appearance in the industry. In the film, he portrayed the role of ‘Herbert,’ which was a supporting role.

In 1985, he was a member of the Broadway production of ‘Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,’ which was a critical and commercial triumph. The ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ musical was based on the novel of the same name by Mark Twain.

In 1987, he starred as ‘Gale Snoats’ in the comedy picture ‘Raising Arizona,’ which was directed by the Coen brothers and starred Martin Lawrence. Among the film’s most notable features are its visual humour and metaphorical components.

Beginning in 1988, he appeared as Roseanne in the American sitcom ‘Roseanne,’ which was a hugely successful television series broadcast on the ABC network. The character of ‘Dan Conner’ was played by him in the show.

King Ralph’, an American comedy film directed by David S. Ward, was released in 1991, and he appeared as the title character. The film, which was based on the novel ‘Headlong’ by Emlyn Williams, was a middling hit with audiences.

The animated Christmas television special ‘Frosty Returns’ included him in the character of ‘Frosty the snowman,’ which he performed in 1992. The show aired on the CBS television network in the United States.

His most notable performance was as ‘Fred Flintstone’ in the Brian Levant comedy film ‘The Flintstones,’ which he appeared in in 1994. Despite the fact that the picture received bad reviews, it was a financial success in the theatres.

‘The Big Lebowski,’ directed by the Coen brothers, was released in 1998, and he appeared in it as himself. The film garnered positive reviews and was presented at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998, where it won the audience award.

The romantic comedy-drama film “Coyote Ugly,” which was based on the real-life Coyote Ugly Saloon, which is a chain of bars in the United States, was released in 2000, and he appeared in it.

“Beyond the Sea,” a biographical film about the life of singer/actor Bobby Darin, featured him in the role of “Stephen Blauner,” the talent manager for Darin. Bobby Darin was the subject of the film, which was based on his life.

‘Cars,’ an animated picture directed by John Lasseter, was released in 2006, and he provided voice work for the film. The picture received numerous awards, including a nomination for an Academy Award..

The romantic comedy film “Confessions of a Shopaholic” included him in the part of “Graham Bloomwood,” which he played in 2009. The plot of the film centres around the life of a journalist who is a serial shopper.

In 2011, he appeared as ‘Al Zimmer’ in the silent film ‘The Artist,’ in which he performed the character of Al Zimmer. Originally released in France and Belgium in 2007, Michel Hazanavicius directed the picture, which was re-released in France and Belgium the following year.

“Argo,” a historical drama film about the Iranian hostage crisis, was released in 2012. He plays the role of ‘John Chambers’ in the film, which was released in 2012. Ben Affleck was in charge of the direction of the picture. From 1989 to 1990, he starred in the popular television sitcom ‘Roseanne,’ which was the most watched show in the United States at the time. In later years, the show was voted as the 34th greatest television show of all time by TV Guide.

“The Artist” was his first film, and it was a huge success, grossing a whooping $133,432,856 at the box office. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for its achievements. Southwest Missouri State University offered Goodman a football scholarship, which he accepted. An injury, however, destroyed his chances of pursuing a football career, and he instead decided to pursue a degree in theatre. Following graduation in 1975, he relocated to New York City in order to pursue performing opportunities. Before being cast in the Broadway production of Loose Ends in 1979, he had appeared in small dinner theatres and television advertisements prior to being discovered.

A few years later, he returned to Broadway in the role of Huck Finn’s father in Big River (1985), which was the performance for which he initially gained critical acclaim. During the early 1980s, Goodman began appearing in films on a regular basis, and his most notable role came in the Coen brothers’ eccentric comedy Raising Arizona in 1987, in which he played an escaped convict. But it was when he was cast as the all-American blue-collar family dad in the hit comedy television series Roseanne that he made his name as a professional actor. His performances in this character garnered him seven Emmy Award nominations as well as a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a supporting role (1993).

His film career began to take off during his successful run on Roseanne, which coincided with the show’s success. Among his other roles were that of a comedian’s husband in Punchline (1988) and that of a pilot who battles forest fires opposite Richard Dreyfuss in Always (1989). He acted in almost 20 films during the 1990s, including The Babe (1992), in which he played baseball great Babe Ruth, and The Flintstones (1994), a recreation of the classic animated television series. For the films Barton Fink (1991), The Big Lebowski (1998), in which he played a Vietnam War veteran who was still haunted by his past, and O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000), in which he co-starred with George Clooney and played a crooked Bible salesman in 1930s Mississippi, he reteamed with the Coen brothers once more.

In Coyote Ugly (2000), Goodman played a father who is worried about his daughter’s impending departure to New York City, and in One Night at McCool’s (2002), he played a detective (2001). Following that, he played the manager of singer Bobby Darin in the documentary Beyond the Sea (2004), a corrupt congressman in the comedy Evan Almighty (2007), and a baseball executive in the drama Trouble with the Curve (2009), among other parts (2012). Aside from that, Goodman appeared in two consecutive winners of the Academy Award for best picture, both times playing figures from the Hollywood industry; in The Artist (2011), he played a studio mogul and in Argo (2012), he played a real-life makeup artist recruited to work for the CIA in a covert operation (2012).

As a ruthless gangster in the rollicking comedy The Hangover Part III, as well as a caustic heroin-addicted jazz pianist in the Coen brothers’ drama Inside Llewyn Davis, Goodman had a busy year in 2013. A few years later, he appeared in two films: The Monuments Men (2014), which portrayed Allied efforts to retrieve art stolen by the Nazis during World War II; and The Gambler (2014), which was an adaptation of the 1974 drama about an elderly man who has a gambling problem. Later films included Trumbo (2015), a biopic of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo; the comedy Love the Coopers (2015); the horror picture 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016); and Patriots Day (2016), which was based on the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and was released in theatres nationwide. In 2017, Goodman starred in the action thrillers Kong: Skull Island, Once Upon a Time in Venice, and Atomic Blonde, among other projects. Captive State (2019), in which aliens have invaded the Earth and are confronted by a resistance movement, was one of his latter films.

In the twenty-first century, Goodman continued to appear on television shows. The sitcom Center of the Universe (2004–05) had him as the star, and he also performed the voice of a lion in the animated film Father of the Pride (also 2004–05). The following year, he participated on the HBO drama Treme, which is set in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina, and he joined the cast of the courtroom drama Damages, which premiered in 2011 and is currently airing. Additionally, Goodman appeared in the HBO television film You Don’t Know Jack (2010), which was centred on Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a passionate supporter of physician-assisted death who was portrayed by Goodman. Following a successful comeback to Broadway with a 2009 production of Waiting for Godot, he went on to star in The Front Page (2016–17).

In 2018, Goodman returned to Roseanne to reprise his role as Dan Conner in the nine-episode revival of the show, which visited the working-class family 20 years after the original series had come to an end. The programme was a ratings triumph, but its network, ABC, decided not to renew it for an 11th season when star Roseanne Barr sent a racist tweet in the spring of that year. This fall, The Conners (2018–) launched as a retooled version of the programme without Barr. The show’s focus was shifted from the matriarch to good actress Alison Goodman, as well as the rest of the supporting cast. The Righteous Gemstones (2019–), a comedy series about a family of televangelists, was also in production at the same time as his other projects.

In the opening scene, The Artist is at the premiere of a picture starring silent-film icon George Valentin (played by Jean Dujardin). In order to get close to Valentin, Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), one of his passionate followers, concocts a plan to get past the security barrier and kiss him in a playful manner. On the next day, a photograph of the kiss appears in the newspaper with the title “Who’s That Girl?” Her first audition is as a dancer, and when Valentin comes across her at Kinograph Studios and meets with the studio’s CEO, Al Zimmer (John Goodman), he insinuates that she should be put in his next film, A German Affair. Peppy established herself professionally throughout the course of the next few years. Valentin is taken aback when Zimmer introduces him to a new innovation: a film with sound. Valentin immediately dismisses the notion. Despite this, talkies gain popularity, and Peppy becomes a star of the new millennium. Valentin is fired by Zimmer at some point.

Valentin produces, directs, and stars in the silent film Tears of Love in an attempt to revitalise his career. However, the film’s release coincides with the release of Peppy’s new talkie film and takes place on the same day as the stock market crash of 1929, resulting in the film’s failure at the box office. Valentin is fired from his job. Valentin’s drinking becomes excessive, his wife, Doris (Penelope Ann Miller), abandons him, and he is forced to relocate from his house to a cramped studio. Eventually, he begins auctioning off his possessions and is forced to part ways with his devoted chauffeur, Clifton (James Cromwell). In a fit of rage fueled by drink, he attempts to set fire to all of his old film reels one night. His flat is completely consumed by flames, and Valentin’s loyal companion, a Jack Russell terrier, dashes outside to locate a neighbouring police officer who can save him.

In his possession is a film canister, which he is found unconscious in. Peppy receives word of his illness and rushes to his bedside to comfort him. When she discovers that the video he has saved is A German Affair, she invites him to stay at her mansion for a while to recover. He learns that Clifton is now working for Peppy and that Peppy was the one who purchased the personal belongings that he had sold to Clifton. He becomes enraged and tears off his bandages before returning to his burnt flat. When Peppy arrives from the studio, she discovers that Valentin has vanished. She jumps in her car and rushes to his house, arriving just in time to prevent him from shooting himself in the head. She informs him that he would be appearing in her upcoming film. Peppy and Valentin are tap-dancing together in the final scene, which includes sound, as they work on a musical composition.

Michel Hazanavicius, a writer and filmmaker, has received critical acclaim for his careful reproduction of silent films from the classical era. The Artist made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palm d’Or and Dujardin was awarded the award for best actor in a leading role (and Uggie, the dog, was given an award called the Palm Dog). The film went on to win six César prizes and garnered positive reviews at other film festivals before being released in theatres nationwide.

With its harsh realism, the show served as an alternative to the sugary television of the day. Roseanne’s subject matter, like her characters, departed from the standard and pushed the boundaries of prime-time television in unexpected ways. Addiction, birth control, homosexuality, and masturbation were all topics that were previously forbidden, and the show frequently addressed them with tremendous hilarious effect. Despite the fact that certain episodes periodically sparked controversy among ABC and its viewers, the show persevered and went on to win multiple Golden Globe Awards. Barr received the 1993 Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her performance in the series.

In 2018, ABC broadcasted a nine-episode revival of Roseanne, which brought the Conner family back to life 20 years after the original series had ended. In addition to its detailed portrayal of the family, who is still living in their working-class circumstances, the revival received positive reviews for how it handled the current hot-button themes of the so-called Trump era. Despite the fact that the revival was a ratings triumph, ABC decided to cancel the series after Barr sent a racist tweet in the spring of that year. Following that, she expressed regret, but the network retooled the series without her, and The Conners(2018–) debuted in the autumn without her.

An award given annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in celebration of outstanding achievement in motion films and television during the preceding year is known as a Golden Globe Award. The Golden Globes are considered to be second only to the Academy Awards (for cinema) and the Emmy Awards (for television) in importance within the entertainment business, and the televised awards ceremony is a sumptuous affair on par with the Academy Awards and Emmy Awards.
