John Slattery was the sixth of eight children to be born into the Irish family of John “Jack” Slattery and Joan (née Mulhern) Slattery on August 13, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America. His mother was a certified public accountant who worked until she retired, and his father was a leather merchant. They reared him, his four older sisters, and one younger brother as Roman Catholics in Boston.

He attended “St. Sebastian’s School” in Needham, Massachusetts, for his academic training.
