John Turturro Bio

John Turturro is a famous actor, writer, and director noted for his parts in the films he has directed and written. He was born in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. His mother was an amateur jazz singer who had worked in a navy yard during World War II. He went to the United States, where he first worked as a construction worker and then as a carpenter until enlisting in the United States Navy during the war. In 1944, when serving in the Navy, he was a member of the D-Day fleet, which assisted in the landing operations of Allied soldiers in Normandy, France.

Turturro moved to the Rosedale neighborhood of Queens, New York, with his family when he was six. He was reared as a Roman Catholic in that community. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the State University of New York at New Paltz and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from the Yale School of Drama.

Nicholas Turturro, also an actor, is Turturro’s younger brother. Together with his wife, the actress Katherine Borowitz, he is the proud parent of two sons: Amedeo (born in 1990) and Diego (born in 2000). The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) is an event that screens films for children ages three to eighteen years old. John Turturro is a member of the Jury for this event, which is held in New York City. Turturro was granted Italian citizenship in January 2011, and he now has passports from Italy and the United States of America.

His debut in the film industry came from a non-speaking extra part in Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980), which received widespread praise from film critics. In 1983, he participated in the Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Centre. He originated the title character there in John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.

Off-Broadway the following year, he performed it again and was nominated for an Obie Award. In the 1985 action picture directed by William Friedkin and starring Willem Dafoe as the wicked counterfeiter, “To Live and Die in L.A.,” starring Turturro as the henchman of the counterfeiter, Turturro had a prominent supporting part.

Spike Lee reacted positively to Turturro’s work in the 1987 film Five Corners, which he cast him in the 1989 film Do the Right Thing. This was the first film in a long-running collaboration between the director and Turturro, which includes work together on a total of nine films — more than any other actor in Lee’s oeuvre — including Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Clockers (1995), Girl 6 (1996), He Got Game (1998), Summer of Sam (1999), She Hates Me (2004), and Miracle at St. Anna (2008). This movie was the first film in this long-running collaboration.

In addition to his roles in comedies and dramas, Turturro has worked extensively with the Coen Brothers on many of their films, including Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski (1998), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). The Coen Brothers are responsible for some of Turturro’s most notable cinematic roles.

Turtutto is also known for his roles in various films directed by Adam Sandler, including “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (2008) and “Mr. Deeds,” which was released in 2002. In the comedy Anger Management, he portrayed the role of a highly disturbed patient of Jack Nicholson’s character. At the same time, in the drama Secret Window, he took on the role of an enemy for Johnny Depp’s character.

When Turturro was the host of Saturday Night Live in 1994, he made a parody of his then-recently released film, Quiz Show. In the skit, he was told that he was ineligible to host the show unless he answered questions in a booth and that if he failed the test, Joey Buttafuoco, who was backstage to watch Turturro’s trial, would be allowed to host the show.

He was nominated for an Emmy for his performance as Adrian Monk’s brother Ambrose in the sitcom Monk, which aired on the USA Network, and he has played the part at other times since then. In addition, he has been nominated for and won several accolades presented by film-related organizations such as the Golden Globes, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Screen Actors Guild, amongst others.

Illuminata (1999) was a film that Turturro not only appeared in but also produced, directed, and directed. The film also featured Turturro’s wife, the actress Katherine Borowitz. Romance and Cigarettes, a film released in 2005, was written by and directed by him. In 2006, he had roles in both The Good Shepherd, directed by Robert De Niro, and the Transformers live-action film series, playing the role of Sector 7 agent Simmons in all four movies. In 2010, he directed the film Passione, a documentary on the vibrant musical history of Naples, Italy.

In October 2011, he debuted as a stage director with the Broadway play Relatively Speaking. In this play, he directed an ensemble cast of seasoned performers in a performance of three hilarious one-act plays written by Elaine May, Woody Allen, and Ethan Coen. His first play as a stage director was Relatively Speaking. Julie Kavner, Marlo Thomas, Mark Linn-Baker, and Steve Guttenberg were among those that appeared in the cast.

Midway through September 2013, the Toronto International Feature Festival (TIFF) hosted the world premiere of Fading Gigolo, Turturro’s sixth feature as director. In the movie, Turturro also appears with Woody Allen, who plays the role of an inexperienced pimp who supervises Turturro’s character as he engages in sexual activity. Turturro stated his desire to draw comparisons between sex work and acting in an interview in September 2013.

He said that acting is a “service business” in which performers ” act out people’s wishes or fantasies.” Turturro’s objective was to compare sex work to acting. At the 31st Annual Miami International Film Festival, which took place in March 2014 at the Olympia Theatre in Downtown Miami, Turturro was honored with a special homage and award for his career achievements.
