Katherine Applegate Bio
(Born in 1956.) Katherine Applegate is a children’s novelist from the United States who has published more than 150 books for children of different ages and grade levels. Many of them were written in collaboration with her husband, Michael Grant, who is also a children’s author. Her novel The One and Only Ivan (2012) was awarded the Newbery Medal in 2013, which is given to the most remarkable children’s book published in the United States each year. Originally written for a middle-school audience, The One and Only Ivan is a fictitious account of a real-life silverback gorilla called Ivan, who was imprisoned and shown in a shopping mall for 27 years until he was released.
Katherine Alice Applegate was born on the 19th of July, 1956, in the state of Michigan. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin. Applegate’s literary career started with the publication of a Harlequin romance, The Midas Touch (1988), written under the pen name Katherine Kendall. From there, she shifted into the field of children’s literature, first ghostwriting (writing for someone else under their own name) a number of novels in the Sweet Valley High series before becoming a published author herself.
This young-adult series, which was published during the 1980s and 1990s, depicts the adventures of identical twin sisters as they grow up. The One and Only Ivan, written by Katherine Applegate, was awarded the Newbery Medal in 2013. The narrative is told from the point of view of a gorilla who lives in a glass cage in a shopping mall, and it is written in the first person. It was said by the Newbery prize committee that “Katherine Applegate provides readers with a unique and memorable gorilla’s-eye-view of the world that questions the way we regard animals and ourselves.” Katherine Applegate is the author of several novels for young readers, including The One and Only Ivan, which won the 2013 Newbery Medal, Crenshaw, Home of the Brave, Wishtree, the Roscoe Riley Rules series, Endling, and the Animorphs series, which she co-wrote with her husband, Michael Grant.
Applegate was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has lived in a number of states, including Texas, Florida, California, Minnesota, Illinois, and North Carolina, as well as the United Kingdom. After a year spent in Pelago, Italy, she returned to her hometown of Irvine, California, where she lives with her husband, writer Michael Grant, their two children, and a variety of other animals. Follow Applegate on Twitter, where she writes, “I write to see where I’ve already gone.” Follow Applegate on Facebook. I was reading to see if there was somewhere else I could go. “A good book is like a navigation system for the soul.”When Applegate was in her twenties, she authored the Summer series, an eight-book romance collection for young adults in which the main character was a college-age female. June Dreams (1995), Spring Break (1996), and Beaches, Boys, and Betrayal (1998) are some of the titles on this list (1996). Shortly after, she co-created and co-authored the science-fiction Animorphs series with Grant, which is set in the future. These five novels, which were published between 1996 and 2001, illustrate the abilities of five individuals who have the ability to transform (morph) into various animals.
They make use of their skills in order to combat extraterrestrial intruders. The Animorph Chronicles are companion volumes to the main series, while the spin-off series include the Megamorphs (in which each of the characters narrates a different chapter) and the Alternamorphs (in which each of the characters narrates a different chapter) (where the readers choose their own adventures). Animorphs was a television series that aired from 1998 to 2000 and was based on novels of the same name.
The Everworld volumes, which were released between 1999 and 2001, are a fantasy series that Grant and I co-created. During the course of these volumes, the adventures of five high-school-aged children who come into touch with Vikings, gods, fairies, and aliens in an alternative dimension are chronicled. Search for Senna (1999), Brave the Betrayal (2000), and Mystify the Magician (2003) are some of the titles in this series (2001). Her science-fiction Remnants trilogy, which includes the books The Mayflower Project (2001), Isolation (2002), and Survival (2003), addresses the end of the planet and one group’s struggle to survive on an alien world. She was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles.
Applegate has authored a number of stand-alone novels in addition to her multiple series. A few of her more recent books include The Buffalo Storm (2007), a picture book about a young Sudanese refugee written in free verse, and Eve & Adam (2012), a science-fiction adventure created in collaboration with Grant. The One and Only Ivan, written in prose poetry and nominated for several awards, explores the themes of friendship and optimism with warmth and humor.
