Kathy Burke Bio

Katherine Lucy Bridget Burke is a well-known actress. She rose to recognition because of her recurrent role as Magda on the British sitcom Fabulous (1992–2012) and her performances on sketch programs like French and Saunders (1988–1999). She also often worked with fellow comic Harry Enfield, contributing to her success in the comedy industry. She played the role of Linda La Hughes in the BBC comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme from 1999 to 2001, and for her work on the show, she was nominated for two BAFTAs and won a British Comedy Award.

Burke was born on June 13, 1964, at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Her parents, Paddy and Bridget, were both Irish Catholics. Burke spent her childhood in Islington, which is located in North London. When Burke was only two years old, her mother, who was known as Bridie, passed away from cancer. She went to the Maria Fidelis Convent School in Euston, a secondary school, until she was 16 years old. Before that, she lived with her alcoholic builder father and attended the same school. After that, she participated at the Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington to further her training.

Pam St. Clement, Robbie Coltrane, Miriam Margolyes, Honey Bane, Debby Bishop, and Eva Mottley co-starred with Burke in the film Scrubbers, released in 1982 and directed by Swedish actress Mai Zetterling. Burke’s debut part was in the film. The movie’s story takes place at a facility for young female criminals, and many people compared it to the film Scum but with a female protagonist.

In 1985, Burke was featured in a public education video about heroin addiction in a role that did not need her to speak. The following year, she was included in a non-speaking position as a ‘witness in the doorway’ in an award-winning advertisement for The Guardian’s ‘Points of View’ column.

When Burke first started appearing on television, he was cast in supporting parts for skits starring more well-known comedians and actors like Harry Enfield, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders. This is how Burke made his name known to viewers. During his early television career, he played the roles “Tina Bishop” and “Perry the Pre-pubescent Schoolboy” on the talk program “The Last Resort,” which was hosted by Jonathan Ross and shown on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom in the middle of the 1980s.

Bishop was a perpetually pregnant “expert” who offered advice on various housework aspects, which almost invariably led to tragic outcomes. Perry and Tina subsequently appeared on Harry Enfield programs, this time as recurrent comedy characters. She has contributed to two Comic Relief charity singles, performing with French and Saunders. She made her debut in the public eye for the first time in 1989 as a member of the Bananarama parody band Lananeeneenoonoo.

In 1997, she debuted as a member of the Spice Girls look-alike band the Sugar Lumps. In reality, Burke is a vast Morrissey admirer. He was featured in the music video for Morrissey’s song “Ouija Board, Ouija Board” from 1989 and subsequently starred in the documentary The Importance of Being Morrissey, which aired on Channel 4 in 2002.

Although she is most known for her comedic parts, she has also appeared in numerous dramatic roles, notably that of Queen Mary Tudor in the film Elizabeth, released in 1998. She became popular quite rapidly on her own merits. In recognition of her work as Martha, a mute character, in the television series Mr. Wroe’s Virgins, which aired on the BBC in 1993, Burke received the Royal Television Society Award for Best Actress in 1994. Danny Boyle directed the television show about John Wroe, which was adapted from a novel by Jane Rogers.

In recognition of her performance in the gritty drama Nil by Mouth, Burke was awarded the prize for Best Actress at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Burke was so sure that she would not win that she did not make any preparations to attend the ceremony; when she was informed a short time before the event that she had won, she discovered that her passport had expired.

Her performance in the film was deemed worthy of consideration for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She starred as Linda La Hughes in the BBC television series Gimme Gimme Gimme from 1999 to 2001. She co-created the show with writer Jonathan Harvey. For her role in the show, she was nominated for three British Comedy Awards and won one, in addition to receiving two BAFTA TV Awards and a National Television Award.

She had roles in two films released in 2000: the cult classic Love Honour and Obey, co-starring Ray Burdis, and the comedy Kevin & Perry Go Large, in which she played the role of Perry. She was named one of the 50 funniest performers in British comedy by The Observer in 2003 when the publication made the announcement.

Since 2001, she has not participated in any playing roles, instead devoting her time to directing theatrical productions, which she counts as one of her most significant interests. She said in an interview that she gave to Dawn French for the book Girls Who Do Comedy that the reason she had quit acting was that she did not have the same level of creative energy that she had in the past when she was acting and that this was the reason why she had stopped performing.

Since then, she has done some voiceover work, including commercials for Ski yogurt that aired on UK television in 2005 and the role of Rita’s mother in the computer-animated film Flushed Away, released in 2006. In addition, she played Nan’s daughter Diane in the Christmas Special of The Catherine Tate Show in 2007, which aired in 2007. In the movie version of the book Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, released in 2011, Burke portrayed the role of Connie Sachs. Due to her work as a Supporting Actress in 2012, she was put on the long list for consideration for a BAFTA nomination.

In the prequel to Peter Pan, released in 2015, titled Pan, Burke played the role of Mother Barnabas. Have I Got News for You was a topical news panel that Burke hosted on the BBC in November 2015. In 2019, Burke appeared in her self-titled documentary, Kathy Burke’s All Woman, which is broken up into three parts. The show, broadcast on Channel 4, focused on the prejudices and expectations placed on contemporary women. Several topics, including marriage, pregnancy, and cosmetic surgery, were discussed by Burke.

During the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2021, Burke appeared as a guest judge. Holding is a four-part murder mystery series directed by Burke and produced by ITV. The series debuted on March 14, 2022, and was adapted from Graham Norton’s book of the same name.
