He referred to himself as a “clown” who was unwilling to study. His primary passion was in sports, namely the 100-meter dash and the long jump, both of which he had won as the New Zealand youth champion several times during his athletic career.

He had a dream of being a goalie in football, but he was unable to pursue this professional path due to a foot ailment. Bodnia, who was a student at Espergærde Ungdomsskole, became a member of the theater company and mostly performed comedic parts throughout her time there. At the age of sixteen, his mother advised that he apply to the Danish National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance to be considered for a position there.

As a result of his second effort, which took place in 1987, he was able to acquire admittance. His first application was unsuccessful. En Afgrund af frihed (An Abyss of Freedom) (1989), the film in which he made his debut, featured him in a minor part as a bouncer. As a result of his performance as Patrick Bateman in a stage adaptation of American Psycho, which was one of his first jobs after graduating in 1991, he was often typecast as characters that were violent and nasty.

The first starring part that Bodnia ever played in a film was in the 1993 picture Bulldozer, which was directed by Maria Sødahl. It was in Ole Bornedal’s horror picture Nightwatch (1994) that he made his debut, which was a year later. It was two years until his next picture, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Pusher (1996), and then Winding Refn’s Bleeder (1999), even though this film was a huge hit.

Following that, he has had an appearance in the film Happy (2008), as well as in three films directed by Lasse Spang Olsen. These films are China They Eat Dogs (1999) and its sequel, Old Men in New Cars (2002), as well as Den Gode Strømer (2004), which he collaborated on writing with the director. In addition, Bodnia has made appearances in several Norwegian films, such as Himmelfall (2002), Monstertorsdag (2004), and Tomme Tønner (2010).

It was in the Indian English comedy film Delhi Belly (2011) that he played the role of a Russian smuggler. Jon Stewart was the director of the film Rosewater, in which he played the role of the titular Iranian interrogator. About his function, he said, “It was a challenging job because I am Jewish.” I’m portraying a character who has a deep-seated hatred for me and a desire to bring down my nation.

As a result of his performances on television, Bodnia has gained recognition on a global scale. In 2006, he made his debut in the historical miniseries Snapphanar, which was his first appearance. Between the years 2007 and 2009, he made appearances in two episodes of the comedy-drama Hvor fanden er Herning? (which translates to “Where the hell is Herning?”) and three episodes of the first season of the crime series The Killing (which is known in Danish as Forbrydelsen).

Before making her comeback to the world of crime series, she made appearances in episodes of the Swedish soap opera Kommissarie Winter (2010), the Swedish soap opera Den som dræber (2011), and the German/Swedish soap opera Der Kommissar und das Meer (2012).
His performance as the best actor in a supporting role earned him the 62nd Bodil Award in 2009.

The Monte-Carlo Television Festival presented him with the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series after he won the award in 2014.
Throughout the first two seasons of the Nordic noir crime television series The Bridge (Broen|Bron) (2011–present), Bodnia portrayed the role of Danish investigator Martin Rohde. It is a collaborative creative and sponsored production between Sveriges Television of Sweden and DR of Denmark. Hans Rosenfeldt is solely responsible for its creation and writing.

Over one hundred nations have shown it to the public. Although Bodnia had signed a contract for the third season, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the show because he was dissatisfied with the progression of his character. As a result of the city’s issues with anti-semitism, which had made his choice to quit the series easier, he also expressed his misgivings about working in Malmo during an interview. He emphasized that “it’s not very nice and comfortable to be there as a Jewish person.”

At the beginning of 2014, Bodnia supervised readings of The Tailor’s Tale, a play written by his cousin Alexander Bodin Saphir and based on the experiences of his Jewish grandfather who lived in Copenhagen during the time of Nazi rule. The piece was produced at the Scandinavia House–The Nordic Center in America in New York.
