Kimbra Bio

Kimbra, a pop singer from New Zealand, debuted with the album Vows in 2011, which went on to win several awards. However, her appearance on Gotye’s international breakthrough single “Somebody That I Used to Know” brought her widespread recognition. She leveraged that praise to create some of the most adventurous and creative fusions of jazzy R&B, pop, and dance music of the 2010s. Kimbra Johnson was born in Hamilton, New Zealand, at 12, and she started taking guitar lessons at about the same time. By the time she was in her teens, she was already playing live.

The record company Forum 5, located in Melbourne, Australia, took notice of her when she won a Juice TV video award in 2007, and they offered her a recording deal. Her first single, titled “Settle Down,” was released in 2010, the same year she had a cameo appearance on Miami Horror’s song “I Look to You.” The studio album “Vows” by Kimbra was released by Warner Bros. Records in 2011, including the hit “Settle Down.”

In the same year, she also collaborated with the Australian-Belgian artist Gotye on the song “Somebody That I Used to Know,” In May of 2012, a drastically altered version of her first album was made available for purchase in the United States. After that year, Kimbra was crowned the winner of five New Zealand Music Awards, including Best Female Solo Artist and Best Pop Album. She also received praise for her work with Gotye well into 2013, including the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 2012.

In addition to going on tour with Gotye and performing at several festivals, including a slot at the Rock in Rio event in Brazil, Kimbra also started working on her second studio album, The Golden Echo. She went back into the studio with producer Rich Costey and a number of colleagues, including Bilal, Van Dyke Parks, Matt Bellamy of Muse, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta, and Silverchair’s Daniel Johns, who co-wrote several of the songs on the album. A few of The Golden Echo’s singles, such as the genre-hopping “’90s Music” and the silky disco-funk tribute “Miracle,” gave listeners a taste of the album’s eclecticism before its release in August of 2014.

Kimbra and Bilal got back together in 2015, and she appeared on his album “In Another Life.” The following year, in 2016, she released her first song titled “Sweet Relief.” The first taste of her third album Primal Heart was provided via the track “Everybody Knows,” which was released in 2017. The album Primal Heart was released in April of 2018, and it included tracks that Kimbra had a hand in co-writing and co-producing, in addition to collaborations with John Congleton and Skrillex.

Kimbra is the stage name of New Zealand-born singer and actress Kimbra Lee Johnson, who was born on March 27, 1990, in Hamilton, New Zealand. Her musical style combines elements of pop, jazz, and rock music with traditional R&B and vintage R&B sounds. Her diverse collection of musical inspirations includes artists such as Prince and Minnie Riperton, as well as Bjork and Jeff Buckley. Early public performances by Kimbra included her singing at JBC (now the dive bar Nivara Lounge) in Hamilton when she was only nine years old, the Waikato Times Gold Cup race meeting in 2000 when she was only ten years old, and singing the national anthem when she was only 12 years old in front of 27,000 people at the Auckland vs. Waikato NPC rugby final.

She was brought to the attention of former Independent Records boss Mark Richardson (Jamiroquai, Paula Abdul) and his newly-formed management company and independent label Forum 5 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 2007. This was after she won the Juice TV award for the best breakthrough music video for her second single, “Simply on My Lips.” The award was given for the music video for the song “Simply on My Lips.” Kimbra released two songs before the release of her first studio album. These singles were titled “Simply On My Lips” and “Deep For You.”

In 2011, Kimbra released her first album, “Vows.” This album has been used as the basis for the creation of three singles: “Cameo Lover,” “Settle Down,” and “Good Intent.” According to the Settle Down Songfacts, Kimbra’s life changed dramatically from the age of 17 to 22 as she wrote the songs that comprise her album Vows, which examines love, coming of age, and identity.

In 2011, Kimbra released the track “Somebody That I Used to Know” in collaboration with Gotye, an Australian musician. This song reached number one on the charts in many countries, including the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

In May 2012, a drastically revamped version of her first album was made available for purchase in the United States. At the conclusion of that year, Kimbra was crowned the winner of five New Zealand Music Awards, including the titles of Best Female Solo Artist and Best Pop Album, respectively. She also received praise for her work with Gotye well into 2013, including the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 2012.

In addition to going on tour with Gotye and performing at several festivals, including a slot at the Rock in Rio event in Brazil, Kimbra also started working on her second studio album, titled The Golden Echo. Additionally, the album featured collaborations with John Congleton and Skrillex.

Kimbra Lee Johnson was born on March 27th, 1990, and she spent her childhood in Hamilton, which is located in New Zealand. Both of her parents worked in the medical field; her father, Ken Johnson, was the chief doctor at the student health center at the University of Waikato, while her mother, Chris Johnson, was an orthopedic nurse. Kimbra started creating songs when she was just ten years old. Her father gave her a guitar when she was 12 years old, and after a few years of practicing with it and taking lessons, she could play on stage with her guitar teachers.

Hillcrest High School was Kimbra’s alma mater, where she participated in the national schools’ musical competition Rockquest for three consecutive years, culminating in her achievement of second place in 2004 when she was just 14 years old. It Takes Time, an early her album from 2004, was highlighted by Play It Strange, a New Zealand group showcasing talented singers and composers. Play It Strange was founded in 2004. Kimbra’s first music video, “Smile,” was produced for the children’s television program What Now. Kimbra participated in the Hillcrest High jazz chorus known as Scat during her time there.

“Settle Down” was the title of Kimbra’s first single, released by Forum 5 in June 2010. Four years before, she had begun composing the tune and collaborated with Francois Tétaz to complete it. Guy Franklin was the one behind the camera for the music video. The song was highlighted on the website of Perez Hilton, who said, “if you like Nina Simone, Florence & the Machine, and Bjork, then we believe you will appreciate Kimbra – her music reminds us of all those powerful girls!”

Kimbra’s vocals are used on the track “I Look to You,” which was released as a single on December 10 by the Australian “indietronica” outfit Miami Horror. Kimbra is also featured in the music video for the song, in which she can be seen going through golden fields while wearing face paint and various costumes. The film incorporates wide-angle and kaleidoscopic perspectives. The song “Cameo Lover,” which was released by Kimbra in early 2011, was one of the finalists for the 2011 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, and it ended up winning the competition. Her next song was titled “Cameo Lover,” and she filmed the music video released in April. Franklin distributed the track in March.

In order to celebrate the launch of her next track, “Cameo Lover,” which was released on March 13, Kimbra performed at the Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney for the Moomba Festival and the ChillOut Festival. On July 15, 2011, the song “Cameo Lover” was declared the songwriting competition winner. The song “Somebody That I Used to Know,” composed by the Australian artist Gotye, finished in third place. Kimbra inked a contract with Warner Bros. Records New Zealand on June 7 for distribution of her music in New Zealand and Australia, in addition to a global agreement with Warner Bros. Records for distribution in all other countries.

Recordings in the United States. Kimbra contributed vocals to Gotye’s track “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which was released on July 5 and was mixed by Tétaz. After a ‘high-profile’ Australian female singer had backed out of their planned duet with Gotye, Tétaz had suggested that Gotye works with Kimbra instead.
