Lou Adler Bio

Louis Adler, who was born on December 13, 1933, is a record and film producer from the United States of America. He is also a co-owner of the Roxy Theatre, which is located in West Hollywood, California. The Grass Roots, Jan & Dean, The Mamas & the Papas, and Carole King are just a few of the legendary musical performers that Adler has promoted and cultivated via his production and development work.

King’s album Tapestry, which was produced by Adler, was awarded the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1972. It has also been regarded as one of the best pop albums of all time. Additionally, Adler is the person responsible for discovering and producing comedy albums and films for Cheech & Chong. He is also an executive producer on The Rocky Horror Picture Show. His accomplishments in the field of music earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the year 2006.

Alongside Quincy Jones, he was the recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the year 2013. Adler had established Dunhill Records in the year 1964. Between the years 1964 and 1967, he served as the label’s president and then as its principal record producer. During that same period, Adler signed The Mamas & the Papas to Dunhill, which resulted in the group achieving six top-five songs, including “Monday, Monday” and “California Dreamin’.”

Additionally, Dunhill was able to achieve the top spot in the pop charts with the track “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire. In addition to the efforts of co-producers and songwriting partnership P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, the label was able to achieve a position of #8 in the pop charts with the track “Let’s Live for Today” by The Grass Roots. Taking advantage of Dunhill’s thriving business.

Carole King, Spirit, Cheech & Chong, Scott McKenzie, Peggy Lipton, and other artists were among those whom Adler signed to Ode Records after he sold the business to ABC in 1967. On Ode, Adler was responsible for producing all of King’s albums, which included four gold albums, one platinum album, and one diamond album, according to the RIAA’s certifications. Tapestry, the second album that King released for Ode, is known to have sold more than 25 million copies all over the globe and is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time.

The work that Adler did on Tapestry earned him two Grammy Awards in 1972: the Record of the Year award for producing “It’s Too Late” and the Album of the Year award also for his work on Tapestry. Not only did Adler collaborate with the musicians on his label, but he also produced several live recordings for Johnny Rivers during his career. In June 1967, Adler was involved in the production of the Monterey International Pop Festival. Additionally, he was a co-producer of the film adaptation of the festival, titled Monterey Pop, with John Phillips, who was a member of The Mamas & the Papas.

After the Monterey Pop Festival, Adler and Phillips collaborated once again to develop the film Brewster McCloud, which was directed by Robert Altman in 1970. As an executive producer, Adler was responsible for the production of the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the year 1975. After seeing a performance of The Rocky Horror production at a theater in London, Adler decided to purchase the American rights to the production. He then went on to perform the act live in Los Angeles and executive-produced the film adaptation of the show, adding the word “picture” to the series’ title.

As time went on, the picture became the longest-running theatrical film in the history of the industry. In 1978, Adler was the director of the film Up in Smoke, which featured Cheech & Chong as the lead actors. Even though the film is still considered a cult classic, Adler and Cheech Marin produced a commentary track for the DVD release in the year 2000. The film that he directed in 1981, titled Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains[8,] did not have a significant effect when it was first released, but it has been aired on cable television for a very long time.

Also in 1981, Adler served as an executive producer for the film Shock Treatment, which was the sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. According to a report from the year 2020, Adler was often seen sitting courtside close to Dyan Cannon and Jack Nicholson during home games for the Los Angeles Lakers. Together with his son Nic, Adler is the owner of The Roxy Theatre, which is a landmark music venue located on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. Nic is the one who runs the facility.

Adler served as the inspiration for Peter Fonda’s portrayal of Terry Valentine in the film The Limey. Adler and his administrative helper were taken from their house in Malibu in the year 1976 under mysterious circumstances. To obtain admission, one of the offenders drew a revolver on Adler’s aide and then entered the building. After eight hours of detention, the two guys were finally let free when a ransom payment of twenty-five thousand dollars was made.

Sheriff’s officers were able to obtain $14,900 of the ransom after the arrest of three defendants. A subsequent trial resulted in the conviction of two suspects, with one of them receiving a sentence of life in prison. At 625 North San Vicente Boulevard, the Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room of the City of West Hollywood will be the location of the event that will take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The talk will start at seven o’clock, and then at eight o’clock, there will be a celebration for the opening of a picture show honoring Roxy’s 50th anniversary that will be held at the neighboring West Hollywood Library. The exhibit will be organized by Jasen Emmons, who works at the Grammy Museum. The talk has achieved its maximum number of RSVPs; however, there are still RSVPs available for the opening reception of the picture show that will take place after the chat via Eventbrite.
