Marta Marrero, best known by her stage name Martika, is an American pop singer and actress. She was born on May 18, 1969, although she is better known by her stage name. Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s, she recorded two albums that were very popular on a global scale, with each album selling more than four million copies around the globe. In the middle of 1989, her song “Toy Soldiers” became her most successful single, reaching number one on the American chart for a total of two weeks. Additionally, she is well-known for her role as Gloria on the television show Kids Incorporated.
Her first part in the mainstream entertainment industry was in the 1982 film Annie, in which she played one of the girls without receiving any credit for her performance. Her performance as Gloria on the long-running children’s program Kids Incorporated, in which she is one of a group of neighborhood youngsters who ascend to local renown by performing staged performances at a corner malt shop, was a direct result of this.
Following the beginning of the second season, she officially accepted her stage name, which was Martika Marrero. Subsequently, she shortened it to the moniker Martika, which she has been using ever since. Martika, along with a large number of other cast members from Kids Incorporated, appeared in the musical pieces that were included in the motivational film Be Somebody… or Be Somebody’s Fool!, which was released by Mr. T in 1984.
Following her appearances in the films Kids Incorporated and Be Somebody, Columbia Records decided to sign Martika to a recording contract. Only in Japan was her first solo release made available to the public. The song “We Are Music” was created to promote Sony cassette tapes in the Japanese market. The song was released in 12″, 7″, and CD formats throughout Japan. Martika recorded a rendition of the song “Bounce Back” by Michael Jay and Gregory Smith in the year 1987.
In addition, there was a music video that was shown on Entertainment 1980, although it was not available for purchase at the time. Martika’s agency urged her to combine her passion for cinema and music by composing soundtracks. In 1990, she penned and recorded the song “Blue Eyes Are Sensitive to the Light” for the soundtrack of the film Arachnophobia. Additionally, Martika was able to merge her love of music with movies. Her voice was not to the liking of the producers of the album, which is why Sara Hickman re-recorded the song for the movie.
Elba Ramalho, Frances Ruffelle, and Deborah Blando, all of whom are Brazilian singers, have all sung the song. Deborah Blando used it on her first album, A Different Story, which was released in 1991. In 1991, Martika contacted Prince with the idea of recording some new songs. “Love… Thy Will Be Done” was her second and last Top-10 song in the United States. It also became a Top-10 success in the United Kingdom and reached number one in Australia.
In the beginning, “Love… Thy Will Be Done” was a prayer that was composed by Martika. Later on, Prince transformed it into a song.
Martika’s Kitchen, her second studio album, reached its highest position on the Billboard Top Albums list at position 111. Although it only had a small amount of radio in the United States, the title single managed to climb up to position 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
On the other hand, the album was a more successful release in other countries, although on a smaller scale than her first. The singles “Coloured Kisses” and “Martika’s Kitchen” led to more success, and the album reached its highest position on the UK Albums Chart at number 15, while it reached number nine on the Australian Albums Chart. Patti LaBelle recorded “Temptation,” another song from this album, on her CD Burnin’. “Temptation” is a classic.
Throughout the fourth and last season of the criminal drama television series Wiseguy, which aired in 1990, Martika played the character of the lounge singer Dahlia Mendez. Steven Bauer, who had previously portrayed the role, replaced over for Ken Wahl. She left the music business in 1991 or 1992, citing burnout and a sense of being overburdened by the weight of fame as the reasons for her decision to leave the profession. Eventually, she disappeared from the public eye.
While Martika was participating in the rise of Latin pop in the year 2000, she contributed lyrics to releases by other artists and performed backup vocals on a variety of projects. However, she was not able to garner any major-label notice for herself. Rather than that, she published a remix of a song that she had just self-recorded called “The Journey” in 2001. She also created a website for her followers called martika.net.
A further tune titled “Monday” was recorded by her for a new solo album, which the website indicated was on its way to being released. On the other hand, her website was eventually taken down, and the CD was never delivered to the public. During the year 2003, Martika and her husband, Michael Mozart, who is also a musician, established the band Oppera. Her collaboration with Mozart resulted in the production of Oppera’s first album, Violince, in the year 2004.
A sample of her most successful song in the United States, “Toy Soldiers,” was taken by the rapper Eminem for the song “Like Toy Soldiers,” which was included on his album Encore in 2004 and included Martika appearing on the chorus of the song. A repackaging of Martika’s greatest hits album from the United Kingdom was done in response, and the album’s title was changed to Toy Soldiers: The Best of Martika. Even though it said that she had not published any albums since Martika’s Kitchen, a biography was included in the record inlay that reflected the new Eminem sample.
