Master P, also known by his birth name, Percy Miller, was birth in New Orleans on April 29, 1970. He started No Limit Records, a shop that later evolved into a record company, using the money he received as a settlement for medical negligence. In the late 1990s, his musicians were everywhere on the hip-hop charts, and Master P was expanding his empire into movies, sports management, and socially conscious rap at the same time. In 1998, Forbes placed him tenth on their list of artists with the most significant annual earnings.
Master P, a prominent figure in the hip-hop industry, was named Percy Miller when he was born on April 29, 1970, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Miller and his four siblings were raised by their father in New Orleans’ Calliope Projects, an area notorious for having a high incidence of crime. This occurred when Miller’s parents split while he was still a tiny child. “We had a house full of people and an empty refrigerator,” remembers Master P.
“I was so hungry that the muscles in my stomach began to cramp.” According to him, the defining moment of his upbringing occurred when he was 16 years old and saw a previous resident of the Calliope Projects, who had moved away to become an insurance salesman, return to the neighborhood in a Mercedes-Benz. He had left the area to pursue his career. As a student in high school, Master P embarked on his first foray into the world of entrepreneurship by selling early-model mobile phones throughout New Orleans. His goal was to one day become a genuine businessman. He recalls that during that difficult period, “no one in my family was able to find work.” “Since I couldn’t find any, I decided to develop my own.”
Master P went to high school in New Orleans at Warren Easton High School, where he stood out on the basketball team as a point guard. Following his graduation in 1987, he made a fleeting attempt to continue his basketball career by enrolling in a few classes at the University of Houston. However, after just a few months into his first year, he decided to withdraw from the school and enroll instead at Merritt Junior College in Oakland, California.
When his grandpa died away, he studied business at Merritt College. Master P was granted $10,000 as part of a malpractice settlement issued to his family owing to the circumstances surrounding the death of his grandfather. Master P started his record shop in the adjacent city of Richmond, California, under No Limit Records. He did it with only the money from the settlement and two years of business studies. Record Label Master P used his record shop to study consumer behavior in the hip-hop business and identify emerging sales trends.
After seeing a market for more hard-edged gangster rap music, he turned No Limit into a record company and released his first album, Get Away Clean, under his production in 1991. After seeing that neither Get Away Clean nor Master P’s album from 1992, Mama’s Bad Boy, were commercial successes, he decided to relocate No Limit Records to his birthplace of New Orleans. The Ghettos Tryin’ to Kill Me, released in 1994, and 99 Ways to Die, its follow-up in 1995, were the albums that brought about Master P’s first significant success. Master P sold around 250,000 copies of the CDs despite not having a national distribution agreement. He advertised the records via word-of-mouth to independent music outlets.
In 1996, when the early releases of Master P’s music were met with critical acclaim and commercial success, P inked a distribution deal with Priority Records. Ice Cream Man, his subsequent album, was published later that year, and it quickly rose to the third spot on the Billboard album rankings after its first release. The following years saw No Limit Recordings produce a string of hit recordings, contributing to the label’s position as the undisputed leader in the hip-hop business.
By 1997, No Limit Records had grown to represent many well-known hip-hop artists, such as C-Murder, Silkk the Shocker, Mia X, and Snoop Dogg. No Limit released 46 albums between 1997 and 1999, several of which occupied multiple spots on the top of the Billboard charts. These years were the band’s most prolific. When asked to explain this tremendous influx of music, Master P gave the following response:
Master P grew into a variety of other businesses because of the achievements of his No Limit Records label. He described the structure of his company, saying, “You spread out because you never know when it’s going to end.” The marketplace is a seesaw that constantly moves up and down. If I let one go, I’ll ensure the other one is going up. If you want to succeed in life, you must think like that.
No Limit Films was the first new business venture undertaken by Master P. In 1997, he financed and produced a documentary drama with a modest budget under the title I’m Bout It. As a result of the film’s unexpected success, he made a substantial profit. Because of its accomplishment, Miramax offered No Limit Films a distribution agreement for the whole country.
Master P established No Limit Sports Management in 1997, marking yet another unexpected expansion of his entertainment business. Running back Ricky Williams, a highly regarded football player who played for the University of Texas and was picked by the New Orleans Saints in 1999, was one of his most notable clients. Williams, who was represented by No Limit, signed a deal loaded with incentives but for much less than his market value. Other sports management organizations had scathing disagreements with the terms of the deal, with one representative describing it as “a mockery of the business.” Williams was unable to meet the most lucrative of his incentives, so he terminated his contract with No Limit in favor of a new representation.
Master P started his career in the sports management industry while he began his professional career as a basketball player in the leagues of major professional sports. In 1998, he declared his intention to the public to pursue a career in the NBA. As a first step in achieving his goals, he signed up with the Fort Wayne Fury, a club competing in the Continental Basketball Association’s minor division. Later, he impressed the NBA enough to gain trials with the Charlotte Hornets and the Toronto Raptors. He could not make it onto an NBA squad despite substantially surpassing most people’s expectations.
