Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, to Mayme Edna and Morgan Porterfield Freeman in Memphis, Tennessee. His mother worked as a teacher, and his father worked as a barber. In his early childhood, his grandmother took him in and raised him until the age of eighteen, when he returned to live with his parents. From a young age, he had a passion for movies and performing.

He used to save his money to go to the movies with his friends, and he admired actors such as Gary Cooper and Sidney Poitier. In addition, he participated in a number of school plays. He attended Broad Street High School in Mississippi and won a state-level drama competition at the age of 12. In 1955, he received his high school diploma. “Jackson State University” offered him an opportunity to participate in a partial drama scholarship program; however, he chose not to accept it.
