Mos Def (born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973), better known by his previous stage name Mos Def is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor. In 1994, he started his career in hip hop with his brothers as a member of the short-lived rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD). Following the group’s dissolution, he and his siblings had guest appearances on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul.
In 1998, he and fellow Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli released their first album under Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. The album included the hits “Definition” and “Respiration” and was self-titled. In 1999, he made his debut as a solo artist with the release of Black on Both Sides, also included on the roster of Rawkus Records. His subsequent works include True Magic (2006), The New Danger (2004), and The Ecstatic (2009), all of which followed his debut. On the list of the “50 Greatest Rappers of All Time” compiled by About.com, he was ranked number 14. Some of his most successful songs include “Oh No,” “Ms. Fat Booty,” and “Mathematics.”
As a kid, he began his acting career and appeared in movies, sitcoms, and theater. Since the early 2000s, he has had guest appearances on television programs such as Dexter and House, as well as in films such as Something the Lord had, Next Day Air, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 16 Blocks, Be Kind Rewind, The Italian Job, The Woodsman, Bamboozled, and Brown Sugar. He has also featured in films such as Something the Lord Made, Next Day Air, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Between 2002 and 2007, he was the presenter of Def Poetry Jam.
Bey has been an outspoken advocate for several political topics, particularly those relating to the Americans, American exceptionalism, and police brutality. He was the oldest of 12 children and step-children, and his mother brought him up in Brooklyn while his father was living in New Jersey. He is the oldest of the group. His grandfather was a follower of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, who brought the teachings of the Nation of Islam into the mainstream of Sunni Islam. As a result, his father was originally a member of the Nation of Islam. Bey became familiar with Islam when she was 13 years old. Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip, other Muslim hip-hop musicians, are his closest friends.
Bey’s interest in acting began in middle school at Philippa Schuyler Middle School in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It was then that Bey discovered his passion for the performing arts. Bey left high school during her sophomore year after returning from Los Angeles, where she had been shooting You Take the Kids and entering into a relationship with a female older than she was. Growing up in New York City during the 1980s and early 1990s crack epidemic, he has talked about observing extensive instances of gang violence, thievery, and poverty in society.
He could dodge these situations to a significant extent by working on plays, Off-Broadway, and arts programs. He has spoken about these experiences. Bey was there when his younger brother Ilias Bey (born Denard Smith), who was only five years old at the time, was struck by a vehicle. This event was harrowing for Bey as a youngster. In subsequent years, Ilias became known by the nickname DCQ, and Bey referred to him as “my first partner in hip hop.”
Bey started his career as a musician in 1994 by co-founding the ensemble known as UTD, which stood for “Urban Thermo Dynamics,” with his younger brother DCQ and his buddy Ces from high school. They debuted with the album Manifest Destiny in 2004, which was also their first and only release. This album is a collection of songs recorded during the first UTD run but has never been published publicly or released publicly again.
Bey began his career as a solo musician in 1996 and collaborated with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees before releasing his first song, “Universal Magnetic,” in 1997. In 1996, Bey began his career as a solo artist.Bey eventually joined Talib Kweli to create the rap trio Black Star after signing a record deal with Rawkus Records. In 1998, the two artists collaborated to create an album titled Kweli Are Black Star was released.”
Hi-Tek produced most of the album, and the songs “Respiration” and “Definition” peaked in the top ten of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list. In October of 1999, Bey released his first solo album, “Black on Both Sides,” distributed by Rawkus. While the album only peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, the song “Ms. Fat Booty” was successful enough to chart. During this same period, he also contributed to the album “Anomie & Bonhomie” by Scritti Politti.
Geffen Records acquired Rawkus Records in January 2002, and Geffen Records was responsible for releasing his second solo album, The New Danger, in October 2004. As the Black Jack Johnson Band, Shuggie Otis & Bernie Worrell, Doug Wimbish, and Will Calhoun each contributed to the album. The album peaked at position #5 on the Billboard 200, making it the most successful release the artist has had to this point. The song “Sex, Love & Money” charted and was also submitted for consideration for a Grammy Award. True Magic was the title of Mos Def’s last solo album to be published on Geffen Records, and it came out in 2006.
