Nicole Maines Bio

Nicole Maines is a well-known actress in the United States. In the Freeform series Good Trouble, she plays the role of Liza Davis. Nicole spent her childhood in Portland, Maine, although having been born in Gloversville, New York. She was given a male gender at birth despite wishing to be a female from a very early age. After being prevented from using the restroom of her choosing in the fifth grade, she was the unnamed plaintiff in the case Doe v. Regional School Unit 26 in 2007. The case was heard in 2007. In June of 2014, she was awarded the victory when the Maine Supreme Judicial Court issued a ruling that was 5-1 in her favor.

Maines and her brother Jonas were adopted at birth as identical twins by Kelly and Wayne Maines in 1997; one of their natural parents was Kelly’s second cousin. Maines and her brother Jonas were raised as members of the Maines family. They were born in Gloversville, New York, but moved to Portland, Maine, when they were young and spent their formative years there. Maines was designated male at birth and began displaying indications of gender variation at an early age; when she was two years old, she allegedly asked her mother things such as, “When do I get to be a girl?” Maines was assigned male at birth.

She enjoyed playing with dolls and other doll-related toys the most, and she related most to the female protagonists in films and animated shows. Maines said that she recognized she was not a boy as early as the age of three and began telling her family precisely who she was by the age of four. Jonas, her younger brother, came to terms with her gender identification at an early age. Reportedly, Jonas had this conversation with his father while his children were still in elementary school.

Maines claims that she named her daughter Nicole, or Nikki for short, after the character Nicole Bristow from the Nickelodeon program Zoey 101. Bristow is one of Zoey’s sidekicks on the show. At first, she wanted to be named Quinn from the same performance, but she kept making spelling problems while penning the name, so she decided to go with Nicole instead. She went with the name Amber as her middle name just because she loved the way it sounded. Because of a rule in Maine that required any name change to be publicized in the local newspaper, Maines and her family decided to wait to change her name until much later formally.

They did this because they were concerned for her safety and wanted to protect her privacy. Because the court granted their request to amend the name change statute, Nicole was excluded from the need that she announce her name change in a public forum such as a newspaper. After some time had passed, she legally changed her name to Nicole Amber Maines.

Maines received her high school education at Waynflete School in Portland, Maine, then continued her education at the University of Maine with her brother Jonas. However, to pursue a career in acting, Maines decided not to go back to school in the autumn of 2018, as stated by her father.

Amy Ellis Nutt, a journalist for the Washington Post, published the book “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family” in 2015, which told the experience of Maines’ family coming to grips with her gender identity. This book is mainly credited for popularizing Maines. The Transformation of an American Family was a book written by Amy Ellis Nutt, a journalist for the Washington Post, published in 2015.

The book focused on Maines and her family. It follows the Maines family as they come to grips with Maines’ gender transition throughout the story. In June 2015, Maines had a guest role on the USA Network drama Royal Pains, playing the role of a transgender kid concerned that her hormones were risking her health. In 2016, the program named “The Trans List” on HBO included Maines as one of 11 different people to be profiled.

In the documentary, Maines and several other persons discuss their experiences of coming to terms with their transgender identities. In July 2018, it was revealed that Maines would be participating in the upcoming fourth season of the television show Supergirl on The CW as a series regular. She performed the role of Nia Nal, the first transgender superhero to be featured on a television show. Nia Nal is a distant cousin of the Legion member Dream Girl.

Her personality is defined as a “soulful woman” with a “ferocious drive to protect others.” The character is a journalist whom Kara helps and mentors throughout the series. She would continue to appear on the show until it was canceled in November 2021, and she would play the part again in an episode of The Flash’s last season in 2023. In 2019, Maines participated in the horror film Bit about queer female vampires.

For her performance in the film, she was awarded the top acting prize at the Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival. In 2021, Maines authored Nia Nal/Dreamer’s first appearance in the comic book version of her Supergirl character for DC Pride (comics) #1. Additionally, it was stated that she will write a solo series for Dreamer in 2022.

Additionally, she was a co-writer on the story for the first appearance of Dreamer in the comic Superman: Son of Kal-El, published on July 12, 2022. In 2023, Maines was cast in the part of Lisa, a recurring character, in the second season of the Showtime series Yellowjackets. Her character is an adult friend of Lottie struggling to heal from the effects of previous traumatic experiences.
