Nigella Lawson Bio

Nigella Lawson was born on January 6, 1960, in London, Nigella Lawson was born to Baron Nigel Lawson of Blaby, a former Conservative MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the cabinet of Margaret Thatcher, and his ex-wife, Vanessa, a wealthy socialite. Under Thatcher, her dad was the Chancellor of the Exchequer. To put it simply, her mom was a rich socialite. Her strained relationship with her father made her childhood unpleasant, and it wasn’t until she was an adult that she grew close to her mother, who died of cancer when she was just 48. Her sibs were Dominic and Horatia, and their sister Thomasina was the only one who didn’t make it. Dominic is also the name of her brother. Her father remarried and had more kids; her half-brother Tom and half-sister Emily are their offspring. Despite her intelligence, she had a lot of difficulties in school. She pursued her study at no less than five different universities before landing on Oxford for her master’s degree in mediaeval and modern languages. Publishing was Lawson’s first professional home. He got his start in the industry while working for Naim Attallah, a publisher.

The publication “The Spectator” requested her to do book reviews when she was only 23 years old, and that was the beginning of her career as a journalist. By 1986, she had risen through the ranks to become The Sunday Times’ deputy literary editor. But she changed her mind and launched a career as a freelance writer, penning essays on food and makeup instead of executive positions. The book “How to be a Domestic Goddess,” published in the year 2000, mostly focuses on the art of baking. After the book did so well, The Observer requested her to cover social issues for them. In just four months, it sold 180,000 copies. It wasn’t long before E! and Style Network began airing “Nigella Bites” on American television. “Nigella Bites” surpassed all other cookbooks sold during the 2002 holiday season to become the number two best seller in the United States.

She managed the planning and execution of a lunch for George W. Bush and his wife during their state visit to the United Kingdom in November 2003, which was hosted by Tony Blair at Downing Street. Her sixth book, “Feast: Food that Celebrates Life,” was released in 2004 and has sold over three million copies worldwide. Throughout that year, she was a frequent guest on American talk shows such “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Nigella Lawson’s third food-related TV series, “Nigella Feasts,” premiered on the Food Network in the United States in 2006 and aired for a total of 13 weeks. The reviewer of Nigella Feasts in Time magazine praised the book, writing, “Nigella Feasts will leave you pining for an invite.” In 2006, “Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen,” a weekly cooking show split into three sections, aired on television. Over three and a half million viewers tuned in for the series premiere, and the last episode went on to become BBC Two’s highest-rated show ever.

The thirteen episodes of Nigella Express that aired on BBC Two between 2007 and 2009 demonstrated easy and quick ways to make a wide range of dishes. Additionally, a book with the same name was made commercially available. She was one of the three judges on the most recent edition of Iron Chef America, which featured a special competition. Cristeta Comerford presented “The Super Chef Battle” in 2010, where she and Bobby Flay faced off against Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batali. In 2012, she released a book titled “Nigellissima: Instant Italian Inspiration,” which was well-received in both the United States and Italy. The BBC aired the eight-part series “Nigellissima.” She made an appearance on the American reality food show “The Taste,” hosted by Anthony Bourdain, in 2013.

In January of 2014, a version of the show premiered on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. Lawson decided to write a cookbook after witnessing the strain placed on the host of a dinner party. The 1998 cookbook “How to Eat,” which helped busy people save time in the kitchen, was so popular in the United Kingdom that it sold 300,000. She had her own cooking show on Channel 4 that drew in an average of 1.9 million people every episode from 1999 to 2001. “Nigella Bites” was the title of the show. Victor Lewis-Smith, a notoriously harsh critic, praised her for her “formidably charismatic” performance. ‘How to be a Domestic Goddess,’ Lawson’s second book, won both the New York Book Festival and the National Book Award. In 2000, it won the British Book Award, and in 2001, it won the WH Smith Book Award. Both the Guild of Food Writers’ Television Broadcast of the Year Award and the World Food Media Gold Ladle Award for the Best Television Food Show was presented to her wildly successful show “Nigella Bites” in 2001.

The World Food Media Gold Ladle Award for Best Food and/or Drink Television Show went to Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen, while the WH Smith Book Lifestyle Book of the Year Award went to Nigella Bites. These two honours were presented in the UK. Nigella Lawson and her husband, the journalist John Diamond, raised two children, a daughter named Cosima and a son named Bruno, together with much love and pride. Sadly, in March of 2001 at the age of 47, Diamond succumbed to throat cancer that had been diagnosed with him. Ten years after marrying art collector Charles Saatchi, Lawson filed for divorce, citing Charles’s unreasonable behaviour as the reason; the couple was granted a judgement nisi in July 2013. Lawson supports the Lavender Trust, which aids young women diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2002, she prepared some lavender cupcakes for a charity event, with the purpose of auctioning them off to generate money. Involvement with the group came as a new experience for her.

Lawson refused the British Empire Medal in 2003. (OBE). As the offspring of a life peer, she is entitled to the courtesy title “The Honorable,” however she never uses it. When queried about her eating habits, this British gourmet proudly asserted, “I eat healthily.” It’s just that I eat enough every day to keep five average people alive and healthy. When she first started out as a celebrity gourmet, she famously declared, “I am not a cook. To add insult to injury, I lack both culinary instruction and experience. My skill resides in the world of food.” She pierced her ears when she was 18, but by the time she was in her thirties, she no longer cared for them and they had closed up. After watching her daughter Cosima get her ears pierced in 2007, she made the decision to do the same. She has said that big hoops are her go-to because of how they make her feel.

The Nigella Bites TV show she hosted on Channel 4 in 1999 was supported by a second best-selling cookbook of the same name. While Lawson’s Nigella Bites series was recognised with a Guild of Food Writers Award, her daytime chat show on ITV in 2005 was met with negative reviews and was ultimately cancelled due to low ratings. Lawson hosted the Food Network show Nigella Feasts in 2006. Then, in the United Kingdom, BBC Two aired Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen, a three-part series. As a result, on BBC Two in 2007, viewers saw the premiere of Nigella Express, a cooking show hosted by the celebrity chef. More than three million copies of her cookbooks have been sold around the world, and her own cookware company, Living Kitchen, is worth seven million pounds. Lawson’s flirtatious on-screen persona has earned her the title of “queen of food porn.” Due to the fact that she is not a professional cook or chef, she tends to be more relaxed when it comes to the quality of the cuisine she serves. Nigella Lawson is the heiress to the J. Lyons & Co. fortune and the daughter of Nigel Lawson, a former Conservative MP and the Chancellor of the Exchequer in Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet.

Vanessa Salmon (1936-1985) was a socialite, “celebrated beauty,” and heir to the family fortune. It was Nigella’s grandmother who came up with the name, and her father, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson, is the inspiration for the name. Her family was well-known for their wealth and the fact that they possessed multiple mansions in the posh neighbourhoods of Kensington and Chelsea. After seeing Vanessa and her daughters, author Peregrine Worsthorne said that they looked “as if they had stepped straight off of a Visconti film set,” a reference to the Italian director’s style. Lawson’s parents split up back in 1980. In 1980, he wed Therese Maclear, a researcher in the House of Commons; they remained married until 2008. Her mother remarried a philosopher named Sir A.J. Ayer in the early 1980s, and they stayed married until her death. One of the most annoying things to Lawson was the fact that, due to the fact that her father was a prominent politician, many people had strong ideas and preconceived notions about her. Lawson and her father had a rocky relationship for a while, especially at the time of their divorce; the two barely spoke until Lawson was an adult, and even then, it was all about her mother. Lawson has remarked that the strained relationship she had with her mother was a contributing factor to her miserable childhood.
