Patrick Peterson Bio

Arizona Cardinals’ fifth-round pick at cornerback in the 2011 NFL Draft. After just one season in the NFL, he rapidly established himself as one of the league’s top corners and was named to his first Pro Bowl team.

Both in high school and at Louisiana State University, he was a highly decorated football player. In high school, USA Today awarded him “Defensive Player of the Year” and he was a two-time All-American in college. With four punt return touchdowns in 2011, he set an NFL record for the most ever in a single season. A combined total of over 80 yards was gained on each of those four punt returns.

McFadden, Walter McFadden and Sinorice and Santana Moss are all members of his family that played in the NFL. A year later, in 2012, he married Antonique Larry. When it comes to stature, the 6’1″ and 219 lb. player from Pompano Beach, FL, has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times: in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Peterson was selected USA Today’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Florida, in 2007. Peterson was also a finalist for the U.S. Army Player of the Year Award and a member of the All-American Bowl team. Patrick had 21 stops, five interceptions, and 733 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior. His 37 tackles and seven interceptions as a junior earned him first-team All-Broward County and second-team All-State honours in Class 5A. An LSU wide receiver, Avery Johnson, is his brother’s teammate. Prior to August 2008, Patrick Peterson went under the name Patrick Johnson (the maiden name of his mother).

As a cornerback and kick returner, Peterson has been named a first-team All-Pro by both the NFL and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Peterson became the fourth player in NFL history to return four punts for touchdowns in a single season as a rookie in 2011, tying the previous mark. As a rookie, he became the only NFL player to score four punt return touchdowns in his first season. To date, only four players in NFL history have been selected to four Pro Bowls before the age of 25: Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith. Ollie Matson, a Hall of Famer, and Peterson are the only players in team history to have been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of their first four seasons in the NFL.

During his first four seasons in the NFL, Peterson started every regular-season game and the team’s Wild Card game in 2014. A five-year deal signed on July 29th, 2014, will keep him in St. Louis through the 2020 campaign. During overtime against St. Louis in Week 9 of the 2011 season, Patrick Peterson returned a punt 99 yards for a touchdown, which is the second-longest punt return in NFL history (103 yards, Robert Bailey, 10/23/94). The 99-yard pass from Philadelphia’s Ron Jaworski to Mike Quick on November 10, 1985, was also the longest play in overtime in NFL history. In November of 2011, Patrick Peterson was selected NFC Special Teams Player of the Month.

Patrick Peterson, who made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons (as a kick returner in 2011 and as a cornerback in 2012-13), was selected to his fourth straight game in 2014. It was an honour for him to join such an exclusive group. Jim Brown, Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith have all been selected to four Pro Bowls before their 25th birthdays in the National Football League’s history. No other defender in NFL history has achieved such a feat as he has.

Patrick Peterson became the first player in NFL history to score four punt return touchdowns of 80 yards or more in a single season in 2011, with returns of 99, 89, 82, and 80 yards.

At cornerback, Patrick Peterson played in all 64 regular-season games over his first four seasons in the NFL, making 208 tackles and intercepting 15 passes (one of which was returned for a touchdown). The Cardinals Wild Card clash against Carolina in 2014 was also initiated by the Cardinals.

Peterson set a new NFL rookie record with 699 punt return yards, beating Pittsburgh’s Louis Lipps’ record of 656, set in 1984. In addition to setting a rookie record, his 699 punt return yards are second all-time in the NFL behind Desmond Howard’s 875 in 1996 for Green Bay.

Punt return yards (699) and touchdowns (four) topped the NFL in 2011 while Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears was second in punt return average (15.9) behind Peterson (16.2).

Only three other players in NFL history — Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith — have been selected to four Pro Bowls before the age of 25 — and they’re all Hall of Famers. Ollie Matson, a Hall of Famer, and Peterson are the only players in team history to have been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of their first four seasons in the NFL.

For his efforts against St. Louis in 2014, Patriots cornerback Patrick Peterson was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after returning a 30-yard interception return touchdown in Week 10 of the season. Two times as NFC Defensive Player of the Week in his career (Week 4 of the 2013 season vs Tampa Bay), twice as NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in his career (Weeks 9 and 12 of the 2011 season), and once as NFC Special Teams Player of the Month in his career (November 2011).

After Aeneas Williams did it in 1994, Patrick Peterson became the first Cardinal to record an interception in four straight games, placing him fourth in the NFL in 2012. (Games 11-14).

Patrick Peterson was selected to the 2014 Pro Bowl for the fourth time in a row, following his selections as a cornerback in 2012 and 2013 and as a kick returner in 2010. (2011). As a cornerback (2013) and kick returner, Peterson was named to the All-Pro first team (2011). As far as we know, only Peterson and Hall of Fame kick returner Rod Woodson have been selected to the Pro Bowl as both defensive backs and kick returners.

Patrick Peterson was the first cornerback picked in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Cardinals’ first-round pick and the fifth overall selection. On July 29, 2014, he agreed to a five-year contract deal with the Cardinals, which will keep him with the team through 2020.

When Patrick Peterson had a reception and a completion against the Detroit Lions in Week 2 of the 2013 season, he became the first NFL defender to do it since the merger in 1970. Canton, Ohio’s Pro Football Hall of Fame now houses Peterson’s gloves and the football that he completed the pass with.

It marks the first time in the team’s history that two players have been named Player of the Week on both special teams and defence at the same time.

Peterson’s 15 interceptions since 2011 are tied with Chicago’s Tim Jennings for the second-highest total in the NFL behind only Seattle’s Richard Sherman during that time period (24). Bryant McFadden, Walter McFadden, Santana Moss, and Sinorice Moss are all cousins of Patrick Peterson.

This season was Patrick Peterson’s fourth in the NFL, and he played in all 16 games while covering the NFL’s best wide receivers. When Peterson faced Lions All-Pro WR Calvin Johnson in the Cardinals’ Week 11 triumph over Detroit, he restricted the four-time Pro Bowler to just 59 yards and no touchdowns on five receptions for the entirety of the game. A Pro Bowl receiver was virtually taken out of the game for the second time in three games when Peterson went head-to-head with him.

For his play against the Rams in Week 10, Peterson won NFC Defensive Player of the Week recognition for his two interceptions and his first career INT return TD. On the final play of the game, Peterson sacked Rams quarterback Shaun Hill for an interception that sealed the victory for the Cards in Week 15. Peterson and Chicago’s Tim Jennings have the NFL’s second-highest combined interception totals since entering the league in 2011.

A rookie in 2011, Patrick Peterson tied the NFL record for punt returns for touchdowns and became only the fourth player in league history to do so. Only one other rookie in NFL history, Jack Christiansen (Detroit, 1951), had more than three punt return touchdowns in a single season. Peterson, a standout high school athlete who went on to play at LSU, had 13 appearances as a true freshman.

He made his first college interception on November 8 against SEC West opponent Alabama. He started the final four games of the season, including Georgia Tech’s Chick-fil-A Bowl victory. On the season, Peterson had an impressive total of 41 tackles (one interception), three pass deflections (three of which were interceptions), one fumble recovery, and one quarterback hurry.
