Peter Cullen Bio

Peter Cullen is a Canadian voice actor known for lending his talents to the different iterations of the Transformers series as the character Optimus Prime. He has worked for Disney in several capacities, the most notable of which was providing the voice for Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.

He was born on July 28, 1941 in Montreal, Quebec. His ancestors came from Ireland. Michaela, Sonny, and Larry are his siblings, and he also has a brother named Larry. He graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963, making him a part of that institution’s very first graduating cohort of students. His brother, Larry Cullen, was a former United States Marine Corps Captain. He was a big part of the reason why Optimus Prime had the voice that he has.

Clay, Angus, Claire, and Pilar are the names of Cullen’s children, and he also has three grandkids. Even tho their characters being his longtime Transformers co-star and fellow voice actor Frank Welker are excellent friends.

Cullen attributes the beginning of his interest in NASA to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, which took place the same year. As a result, he considers the exchange that took place between Optimus Prime and Buzz Aldrin in “Dark of the Moon” to be one of the most proud moments of his career. In 1968, he and Joan Stuart starred as “Giles” and “Penelope” in L’Anglaise, a recurrent piece on the CBC Radio comedy series Funny You Should Say That about a French-Canadian man with an English-Canadian wife.

Alongside Ted Zeigler, Cullen portrayed a French-Canadian astronaut figure on the children’s program The Buddies, which aired on CFCF-TV in Montreal in 1969. The character’s name was Commander Bi Bi Latuque. His experience as a radio broadcaster, particularly in his hometown of Montreal on the (then) MOR station CKGM, where he worked late and weekend swing hours, was essential in the development of his voice. Between the years 1967 and 1969, he served as the show’s announcer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Between the years 1971 and 1974, he was a series regular on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, along with Zeigler and Billy Van. In 1974, Cullen served as the announcer for The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show and was a series regular on the program. In 1977, he provided his voice for a character that was included on the album “The Story of Halloween Horror.”

Cullen reprised his role as Optimus Prime in the live-action film Transformers, which was released in 2007, as well as in the sequels Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, and The Last Knight, as well as in the spin-off Bumblebee and the most current installment, Rise of the Beasts, as well as in the computer games that were based on the film series.

Cullen was told in 2021 by producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura that he was welcome to voice the character for as long as he pleased, despite the fact that he was only legally bound to portray Optimus up to the point that The Last Knight was released. In the computer games Transformers: War for Cybertron, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and Transformers: Devastation, as well as in the most recent television shows Transformers: Rescue Bots, Transformers: Prime, and Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Cullen once again played the part of Optimus Prime.

Cullen was a guest on a number of different television series during the 1980s and 1990s. Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, the Original First Voice of KARR in Knight Rider, Antor and Bomba, and Gunner, in Dino-Riders, Airborne, Zandar, and Nemesis Enforcer in G.I. Joe, Commander James Hawkins in the Vehicle Voltron series, Commander James Hawkins in the Lion Voltron series, the transforming spaceship/robot Ramrod, the heroic Commander Eagle and the villainous Nemesis.

He was known for his roles as Red Skull in the 1981 animated series of Spider-Man, Mantus in The Pirates of Dark Water, Klaar and Zanzoar in Megas XLR, and Mantor and Mantys in Coleco’s mini-series Sectaurs from 1986, which consisted of five episodes. He also had a voice part in the film Gremlins, which was released in 1984, playing the role of a gremlin. In the first season of the Knight Rider series, which aired in 2008, he repeated his role as KARR, the character he had played in the original Knight Rider series.

Additionally, he provided his voice for a number of characters in the animated series The Greatest Adventure: Stories from the Bible, most notably Japheth, one of Noah’s sons in the episode titled “Noah’s Ark,” and the King of Nineveh in the episode titled “Jonah.” Some people were familiar with him due to his role as the primary antagonist Venger in the Dungeons & Dragons animated series.

In the lesser-known series Little Wizards, he portrayed the role of the wicked sorcerer Renwick, and in the short-lived series Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, he played the role of Cindarr. Because he was the first person to ever offer a voice for the character in western media, he was given the honor of providing Mario, the mascot of Nintendo, with a voice during the Donkey Kong parts on Saturday Supercade.

Cullen has provided voiceover work for the album The Dungeonmaster’s Guide, which was released in 2004 by drum and bass DJ Dieselboy. He has also provided narration for the album Tetragrammaton, which was released in 2013 by the Dutch extreme metal band The Monolith Deathcult. In addition, Cullen contributed bass playing to Tetragrammaton’s song “God’s Among Insects.”

In addition, he gave narration for the Star Wars fan film series known as I.M.P.S.: The Relentless and performed voice work for the unreleased video game Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans, which was developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Cullen is offering his expertise as a former police officer with the Santa Monica division to the characters of Police Story 4: First Strike via his role as a voice announcer for New Line Cinema’s promotional material for the film. In addition, he has provided his voice for several promotional materials for the movie “The Iron Giant,” which was released in 1999.
