Filmmaker Peter Jackson became well-known for his bloody, low-budget horror flicks like Dead Alive and The Frighteners. He worked in New Zealand, about 6,000 miles away from Hollywood. Peter Jackson was born in the sleepy coastal village of Pukerua Bay, New Zealand, near the nation’s capital of Wellington. Jackson, an only kid, drew on his vivid imagination after seeing a scenic stretch of shoreline with cliffs and caves. He became obsessed with the show Thunderbirds at a young age.
His passion for science fiction and model-making was stoked by the show’s use of marionettes, robots, and clever special effects. By the time he was nine, he was using the family’s home video camera to create his short films, in which he strove to imitate the special effects he admired. The first time he watched the 1933 picture of King Kong on television was another intense stimulation for his imagination. The next day, inspired by the movie’s use of stop-motion animation, he tried it out for himself.
After that, he continued to produce short films throughout his youth and teenage years, creating his special effects and carefully animating models of the fascinating creatures he’d seen in the works of American animator and filmmaker Ray Harryhausen. He quit school when he was 16 to work as an apprentice engraver in the photographic section of a newspaper, saving money by living at home with his parents so he could buy a camera and film.
He decided to shoot a short film after purchasing his first 16mm camera to get acquainted with its controls. Bad Taste is a tongue-in-cheek science fiction horror fantasy that evolved into a feature picture throughout its production. It would take him four years to finish the job. While his peers were attending college or starting more traditional occupations, Jackson worked tirelessly on his project every weekend. He created all the models and special effects, played several parts (including the lead), and cast his friends, family, and neighbors in the film.
Jackson received funding from the New Zealand Film Commission, allowing him to forgo his day job to complete the film’s editing and scoring. Surprisingly to Jackson, the Commission chose to submit his film to the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Surprisingly, the festival-goers were won over by Bad Taste despite its use of non-professional performers and slapdash visual effects. Jackson secured commercial distribution arrangements for the picture in 12 countries.
Jackson returned from his success in Cannes as a bona fide professional director. The film business in New Zealand was only starting, but its leader, James Booth, saw potential in Jackson and teamed up with him to produce his subsequent two films. After the unexpected success of Bad Taste, the duo made another racy puppet movie called Meet the Feebles (1990).
Meet the Feebles, like Bad Taste, became a cult classic. Jackson’s worldwide reputation as a skilled filmmaker of horror films, one with a delightfully exuberant sense of humor, was cemented with the release of Braindead (released as Dead Alive in the United States). Jackson co-founded the production firm Weta Workshop with a group of reliable associates so his movies could have top-notch visual effects.
Jackson and scriptwriter Fran Walsh had already been close friends by this point. They had a lot of fun with their horror and fantasy works, but they wanted to show they could do more. One of the most terrible murder cases in New Zealand history was depicted in Heavenly Creatures (1994), which followed a young girl as she and her closest friend killed the girl’s mother.
Using his expanding ability with visual effects, Jackson depicted the girls’ shared dream world with exceptional care as he explored the bond between the two troubled young girls. The film was a huge success and brought Kate Winslet, then only a teenager, to the forefront of the entertainment business. It was written by Oscar nominees Peter Jackson and John Walsh.
Jackson was rejected by every other studio but gained support from New Line Cinema. Jackson proposed filming all three novels in the trilogy at once, and New Line was willing to back his audacious plan. If all three movies in the trilogy were shot simultaneously, the production crew could reuse many of the same sets without dismantling and rebuilding them constantly.
That way, the film’s mainly unknown performers wouldn’t seek financially ruinous raises if the first one did well at the box office. While making all three films at once would be cost-effective if they were hits, doing so would result in massive losses if even the first installment bombed at the box office. New Line took a significant risk on Jackson’s vision for the material.
Although Jackson’s King Kong had a dismal opening weekend in the United States, the film eventually succeeded in other parts of the globe. It was one of the year’s top-grossing movies, and its home video sales are unprecedented. Jackson took the vacation he had put off for a decade after working nonstop for so long.
Despite his busy schedule in production, Peter Jackson still finds time to direct. Jackson and Fran Walsh adapted Alice Sebold’s best-selling book The Lovely Bones, in which a dead girl watches her family and friends go on without her from above and reflects on her life and death. Jackson’s ability to branch away from the fantasy/adventure genre in this picture, which premiered in December 2009, was again on full display.
Jackson produced and directed a trilogy of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit while facing production delays and a contractual conflict with New Line Cinema. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), the first film in the franchise, earned over $1 billion globally. The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies were out in 2013 and 2014 the following year, respectively.
Peter Jackson has been recognized by the Queen for his contributions to the film industry and New Zealand. He was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. In 2012, he was elevated to the rank of Knight Companion of the Order (KNZM), and in 2013, he was awarded the highest civilian honor bestowed by his home country: the Order of New Zealand (ONZ).
Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old, a documentary film, surprised viewers in 2018. Digitally repaired, enhanced, and colorized video from the First World War is combined with narration from interviews with war veterans to form this film. Jackson transported his audience back in time one hundred years, immersing them in the brutality of trench warfare on the Western Front with stunning special effects and thorough research.
