Filmmaker Peter Jackson became well-known for his bloody, low-budget horror flicks like Dead Alive and The Frighteners. He worked in New Zealand, about 6,000 miles away from Hollywood. Bad Taste is a tongue-in-cheek science fiction horror fantasy that evolved into a feature picture throughout its production. It would take him four years to finish the job. While his peers were attending college or starting more traditional occupations, Jackson worked tirelessly on his project every weekend. He created all the models and special effects, played several parts (including the lead), and cast his friends, family, and neighbors in the film.
Jackson received funding from the New Zealand Film Commission, allowing him to forgo his day job to complete the film’s editing and scoring.
