Richard Rankin Bio

Richard Rankin is an actor who has worked in Scotland’s theater, television, and cinema. He is possibly best known for his appearances as Captain Thomas Gillan in the military drama The Crimson Field, which aired on BBC One, and in the Scottish comic program Burnistoun, which he also starred in. In the television adaptation of Outlander produced by STARZ, he was given the role of Roger Wakefield in December 2015.

Richard Harris was born in Glasgow in 1983. However, when he started his career in acting, he began going by the surname Rankin, his mother’s maiden name. He did this to avoid being confused with the Irish actor Richard Harris. He signed up to attend Langside College with his brother and fellow actor, Colin Harris. His brother Colin is also an actor and has appeared with Michael Sheen in productions such as The Damned United and Lip Service, which airs on BBC Three.

Richard came to public attention with Robert Florence in the films VideoGaiden and Burnistoun, which they both starred in together. After making cameos on Scottish television programs, including Taggart and Legit, he was asked by the BBC to play the role of Captain Thomas Gillan in a new television miniseries called The Crimson Field. His co-stars in the production were Kevin Doyle and Oona Chaplin. On April 6, 2014, the series’ first episode was broadcast on BBC One.

In addition, he played the lead role in the low-budget horror thriller House of Him, which had its world premiere at the Glasgow Thriller Festival in February 2014. The movie had a budget of around 900 pounds and featured many of his former coworkers from Burnistoun, such as Robert Florence, Kirsty Strain, and Louise Stewart. Rankin was cast as Detective Inspector Luke Nelson in the two-part episode “Fallen Angels” of the crime drama Silent Witness, aired on BBC One in January 2015.

In the third season of Kay Mellor’s anthology drama The Syndicate, which aired in 2015, the writer adapted the part of Sean McGary specifically for the actor Rankin by altering the character from a Northerner to a Scot. Rankin played the role of the gamekeeper at the financially ailing English estate Hazelwood in this series, which chronicled the adventures of a group of coworkers who win the lottery. During the same year, Rankin portrayed Norrie Duncan, the husband of Anne-Marie Duff’s character Claire Church in the crime thriller From Darkness, which aired on BBC One throughout four episodes.

The revelation that Rankin had been cast as adult Roger Wakefield in the time-traveling drama series Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling book series, came in December 2015. The character played by Rankin, who initially showed up in the season two finale in 2016, then reappeared in multiple episodes of the show’s third season, is Brianna Randall Fraser’s potential romantic interest. He made his comeback in seasons four and five, the premieres of which occurred on November 4, 2018, and February 14, 2020, respectively, and his position in the series was enlarged and made more frequent.

Later in the year 2016, Rankin had an appearance in the BBC crime drama Thirteen playing the role of Detective Inspector Elliott Carne. Ivy Moxam, played by Jodie Comer, was a young girl kidnapped and kept captive for thirteen years. The series focuses on Ivy’s attempts to get back in touch with the life she had before she was abducted.

In 2017, Rankin appeared in two projects shown on the BBC. The first was the dramatic miniseries titled “The Replacement,” which centered on a character named Ellen who was coping with the effects of maternity leave and how it affected her job. Within the context of the three-part series, Rankin portrayed her husband, a doctor. The second role was a guest starring appearance as Father Hrothweard in two episodes of the historical drama The Last Kingdom, which aired on BBC Two and was adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s book series entitled The Saxon Stories.

Rankin appeared in episode four of series twenty of ITV’s long-running mystery drama Midsomer Murders as rugby player Danny Wickham. Series twenty debuted in the United States in 2018, before its release in the United Kingdom, and the US premiere came before the UK release. In 2019, Rankin played the neurologist Dr. Alex Kiernan role in season two of the drama Trust Me, which aired on BBC One.

Rankin joined Alfred Enoch, Ashley Jensen, and John Hannah in the second season of the medical thriller, which started production in September 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland. This was a total casting change from the first series, which saw Rankin playing a completely different role.

Scenes for Survival is a series of short theatrical pieces shot under quarantine. It was made in reaction to a global epidemic of COVID-19 and featured Rankin in an episode that aired in July 2020. Scenes for Survival was produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and BBC Scotland. The episode is named “The Longest Summer,” it stars Rankin as a guy reflecting on the summers he spent as a boy. The show also featured a theme song composed by Noisemaker and sung by Rankin. The music was eventually made available as a single to generate money for the Scenes for Survival Hardship Fund, which provides financial support to musicians who have been severely affected by the epidemic.

In 2023, it became public knowledge that Rankin had been chosen to play the central character of Detective Constable John Rebus in a reimagined television series based on detective books by Ian Rankin. Rankin appeared as Jack in the four-part comedy series Saddled, which aired on BBC Radio Scotland at the beginning of 2019 and centered on the exploits of The Easy Rider Cycling Club members.

Production began in the summer of 2021. Produced by the company The Big Light in conjunction with their musical theatre partner Noisemaker, “Atlantic: A Scottish Tale” is a music podcast comprising eight individual episodes. Rankin played the role of Sloane Sinclaire, one of the last people to reside on the lonely island of St. Kilda, which was located off the coast of Scotland.
